Re: Non-Grounded Outlets
What is the obsession with lightening strikes in this thread? There are many other causes of power spikes are there not? Protection from lightning is also what must exist to have protection from faults created by stray cars, linemen errors, tree rodents, and even utility switching. A plug-in protec...

Re: What about thunderstorms?
He raises a few good points -- a properly grounded whole house surge protector is indeed the better protection, he fails miserably in his statements that its the only protection, as well as in his statements that it is complete protection. Please read what I said. 'Whole house' protection is a 'sec...

Re: What about thunderstorms?
Electricity won't pass that "2cm gap" when it has a much easier path to ground (the 3rd prong). Add numbers to your assumption. Let's say a trivial 100 amp surge is incoming to an appliance and protector. So that current will go back to a breaker box earth ground? 'Impedance' has been repeated ofte...

Re: Non-Grounded Outlets
My machine's plugged into a 2 x 1" surge protector in a regular (grounded) outlet, and I believe it did its job. If it did its job, then other surge damaged appliances are listed. No damage means no surge - just a blackout. A blackout is 120 volts dropping to zero. All protectors ignore (do nothing...

Re: Non-Grounded Outlets
would it kill you to cite any reliable reference sources for all your hyperbolic claims? (we can only hope.) Even an above youtube video exposed your misinformation. You completely swallowed those advertising lies. Since you cannot admit to their brainwashing, you do only what you understand - insu...

Re: Non-Grounded Outlets
precious few, if any of the people on this forum are going to pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars (by the time the electricians are through with the billing) to install whole house protection A Cutler Hammer (Eaton) protector even sells in Lowes and Home Depot for as little as $60. With instal...

Re: Non-Grounded Outlets
both primary and secondary (plug in protectors) are recommended in a best possible attempt at protection, Include facts that were overlooked. In a bottom right corner was the 'primary' surge protection layer. You saw that current start to approach what only does protection - earth ground. Every lay...

Re: Non-Grounded Outlets
I did find a reference to 'current surge stopper: Somehow you know because a similar phrase (word association) was found where a completely different concept was discussed. What you should have known In layman's terms: a current source will increase voltage as necessary to maintain that current flo...

Re: Non-Grounded Outlets
[quote="paleriderhowever, there are a multitude of things that I don't comment on, because I realize the limits of my knowledge on that subject, [/quote] And also comment because your knowledge is so limited that you do not even know how little you really know. Foolish is to assume a surge is a volt...

Re: Non-Grounded Outlets
note the MOVs between line and neutral, line and ground, as well as neutral to ground. Pay attention to everything even in your picture. A ground connection must be low impedance (ie less than 3 meters) to earth. Not to wall receptacle safety ground. E stands for earth ground. Furthermore, only ass...

Re: Partially off topic: electricty and power surges
Some of these things may cause the processor to run hotter on AC power vs. battery. If the computer was hot, then both fans are fully on - making most noise. And never slow down. If this is a laptop from one of the better computer manufacturers, then provided with the machine or from their web site...

Re: Thunder storm season
In many years of using their stuff I have never had any kind of damage. So if you have a sizable investment in something, like an elaborate entertainment system, they are cheap insurance. Cheap? You spend how many $hundreds per appliance to only protect a few? The proven solution that protects ever...

Re: Partially off topic: electricty and power surges
Temp may be an issue. I will get one of those cooler things and see if that helps. I do tend to run it all the time and just leave it on. Same thing when I travel, though it does have a few breaks as I move from hotel room to show hall, and back. Temperature differences between battery and AC power...
