Re: Confused! No good CPAP pressure for RERA's!

I am pretty sure that my machine is not picking up the RERA's, as the flow limitations reported by the machine are very low in quantity. So, I think my arousals are due to RERA or some similar sleep disordered breathing that is triggering arousals but not picked up by the machine. The reason I think...

Re: Confused! No good CPAP pressure for RERA's!

Thanks for the responses! How do I know that I have RERA's? All of my sleep studies (several of them) show very low AHI (< 5), yet very high RDI (as high as 35). My last titration at Stanford tried pressures from 6 to 15, and only 10 was good (which seems like an anomaly). At all other pressures, de...

Re: Confused! No good CPAP pressure for RERA's!

Anybody else have suggestions / comments? I am surprised nobody has experienced this problem before. ITs basically a battle between smoother breathing by higher pressure versus creating higher numbers of arousals due to a nervous system that is a little more sensitive and easily stimulated by higher...

Confused! No good CPAP pressure for RERA's!

Hi All, I am really confused and need help about how to treat RERA's. First, some useful facts: I have been battling sleep apnea for several years now. My AHI is always very low, but my RDI is very high (like 20-40). So, my arousals are caused by RERA's. My sleep studies have been done at Stanford s...

Re: Bi-pap AVS better for treating UARS?

With regards to the Bi-Pap problem, I experienced both of the situations described by Kiralynx and DSM: My inhalation breaths were cut short by the sudden shift from IPAP to EPAP, AND the machine was cycling at its own rate, sometimes faster and sometimes slower. I felt I had to try and time my brea...

Re: Bi-pap AVS better for treating UARS?

A brief update: My sleep lab date finally arrived last night! And it could not happen soon enough. Despite using my CPAP religiuously the past months, I have felt pretty worn out. The sleep lab set me up with a Fisher & Paykell Flexifit 432 full mask. Never used a full mask before. It was surprising...

Home Polysomnograph?

I currently have a finger pulse oximeter, and have learned alot checking the data. What I would really like to have is a home polysomnograph, to monitor the stages of sleep and number of arousals. Does anyone know of such products that are available for home use?

Re: Can cpap detect diff between central/obstruction? - one can!

My point here is, that just because not many people are promoting SVs today as a better device for Flow limitations doesn't mean it isn't true. But I do agree that outside this forum we needs lots of research & someone to do it & papers need to be written. But we can also do our own research & come...

Re: Are PapPillows worth the money?

Bought a PAP pillow a few years ago. I use it a few nights a week. I rotate between 3 pillows in my arsenal: (1) Pappillow. (2) King size latex pillow (you can sleep near the ends and squish it to conform to your preferences. (3) Target formable pillow. I have 3 of these. Use one between my knees, g...

Re: Can cpap detect diff between central/obstruction? - one can!

Your points are well taken. I agree that SV technology does not directly address UARS, and also does not address getting a smooth breathing curve directly. However, I would like to point out the following: (1) I think the primary intended application of SV is for central and complex apneas, where th...

I have the Steven Park book on order. He seems to be quite knowledgeable about UARS.

Re: Can cpap detect diff between central/obstruction? - one can!

Great thread. Now I fully understand how servo ventilation and other more advanced technologies can help with non-standard OSA issues (flow limitations, complex, etc...). Thanks so much! I guess if you make a trip to Europe, you could buy a machine there and bring it home? I might just do that next ...

Re: Bi-pap AVS better for treating UARS?

Thanks DSM! That was a very informative post, and answers my questions. Now I am well armed with knowledge to discuss with my sleep doctor. Sounds like SV could be a good fit for me, and my sleep doctor is likely on the money with his call. Will let everyone know the results (mid-April). By the way,...

Re: Bi-pap AVS better for treating UARS?

The ENT already fixed the nasal issues. They fixed my deviated septum, and also performed a turbinate reduction, with some improvement in air flow. It was never really bad to begin with, but it gave a noticeable improvement. Now, I have very good air flow through the nasal passages. The ENT also exa...

Re: Bi-pap AVS better for treating UARS?

Hi Ozij, Yes, that is very helpful to break up the questions, and appreciate your answers. There is one more question that was added to the list, which DSM responded. The question is: Can ASV added to Bi-PAP (while not neccesarily required), have additional benefits for treating flow limitations in ...
