I finally found the problem with my setup.

My ~/Documents directory was write protected (read only). As a result, sleepyhead was unable to create it's data directory. once I write enabled ~/Documents and reinstalled and restarted sleepyhead, everything, including the plots, works.

I got a little farther, ran into another problem, which is now solved. I loaded and installed the drivers mentioned in the first post in this link. thank you so much for mentioning them, I would never have found them otherwise.
