IMO, it is of primary concern that the O2 saturation be optimized and sleep architecture/REM should be a secondary goal. Hence, AHI is an important factor. What good is having good sleep architecture if you have a stroke or heart attack or some other significant health issues caused by apnea relate...

You mentioned that before your sleep study, you thought you were sleeping great. What symptoms were you having that lead you to believe that you might have a sleep problem? Did you have alot of fatigue? Did you have a sleep study based solely on your dentist telling you you had a small airway?? Wha...

The way the lab guy explained it to me, it was the sleep disturbance they were mostly worried about, not AHI. So if they reached full sleep cycles, including full REM cycles, they were thinking they reached the right pressure level, one that cleared enough disturbances. And those full cycles could o...

Thanks all for your excellent replies. Yes, I notice it when I wake up from a really good night’s sleep. Certainly that is my goal and I appreciate it when I do. But to use feelings alone as the sole measure of treatment success I feel takes us down a very slippery slope . Here is why: Before I had ...

Lab chases REM instead of AHI? Can we really self-manage?
I just had my second sleep study last night, with a full night titration. I talked a long time with the tech before the study. I asked him what AHI they looked for before they called the pressure "good" and stopped going higher. He said they did not chase AHI or apnea or Hypopnea events. He said the...

Also, remember with the 431, you buy only one mask for all three sizes. All three sizes come as interchangeable inserts in the one package, like getting three masks for price of one. That way I was able to try out each size on an off and compare till I decided which size I liked best (I ended up on ...

I have Vista and the Encore Viewer software and card reader installed fine, after it did not at first. Here's what happened. I followed the advice somewhere on this board to plug the USB card reader in first before the software install. I did that, and after I plugged it in a window popped up asking...

I am sitting in the airport now after going through security with one of these. You take it out of the case like a computer laptop. They knew what it was and what to do. They did run it through the bomb sniffer process, but it was routine and quick, and all smiles. Started an interesting discussion ...

I promised to post this. Perhaps the last; ya'll goatta be getting bored of this. And I am traveling for a week after this. It was a shorter night because I needed to get up early to catch a plane. Set min to 13, max to 20, but max was never needed... I woke up in the middle of the main cluster and ...

I've been back and forth between the Resmed Ultra FF and the F&P FlexFit HC431. Both of these, when adjusted right, create a pillow of air inside the thin silicon flange... and, if adjusted right, not too tight, are very comfy. My problem is I am now working up to higher pressures (13+) and due to m...

Okay, thanks all... all great advice. Tonight I am going to crank 'er up to max 20. I hope I don't blow the mask off my face Will probably set min to 13 or 14. I'll post the chart tomorrow morning, to continue this learning adventure. By the way Den, no history of GERD. And will experiment with lowe...

Well, per above recommendations I tested switching to CPAP. Set P at 13 (C-flex 2). Results? A nearly identical chart as above (SEE BELOW) in terms of number of OA's and the clustering of them. AHI same (6.5). Leaks all within range. So what does that tell me. It does not seem in my case that the cl...

Thanks Den Yes, I am familiar with central apneas. There were none observed on my initial sleep study but they did not titrate (long story) and I am scheduled to go back again to do that (long wait), which of course means they did not have chance to uncover any pressure induced apneas (yet). I will ...

Den, very good explanation, thanks for that. I was wondering about those clusters. I've seen them every evening, and, interestingly almost always around the same time of night, same pattern: they get started, the pressure goes up, and then they really get going in a cluster. I'll experiment also wit...

Thanks all for your great advice. The predominance seems to be "not a leak issue" and that is my gut as well. I am intrigued by the two comments saying to try switching from apap to cpap using a pressure at the lower end of my current apap range. I'd love to hear more explanation on that. Clearly I ...
