Re: What is so wrong about mouth breathing?

Reefdreamer, You mentioned you doctor suggested nasal surgery to clear up you nose, but you didn't want to consider it. Ask your doctor to evaluate you for "RF turbinate reduction". It is a procedure that will shrink your nasal turbinates with very little discomfort and may help you. It is similar t...

I was suffering with aerophagia at a pressure of 12 cm H2O.
My doctor(at the Stanford Sleep Clinic) prescribed an APAP set 8 to 12 cm and indeed that solved the problem.
He said I would not get as good therapy as a fixed pressure, but it would be adequate.

Welcome rockAteer, Using APAP to reduce or stop aerophagia was prescribed by my Stanford Sleep Clinic doctor for me and it worked. I was at a pressure of 12 at the time and the APAP completly eliminated the problem for me. So this is not some unproved idea and I would recommed that you explore it wi...

LJJ,

The button that turns on the humidifier will work even if the humidifier is plugged into the wall. It does not have to be plugged into the machine.

mxylplik2,

I have a friend that had a tonsillectomy and was cured of sleep apnea and no longer needs CPAP.

Also, I recommend you research the UPPP flap procedure which has a higher rate of success with lower complications than a straight UPPP.

rudyrx, I just had the surgery August 1 from the same doctor who did your work up. I also had a UPPP flap and RF tongue reduction along with GA. The doctor says that combination cures 75% of his patients. Here is what I can tell you so far about my experience: The pain and discomfort of the surgery ...

Yes, there is a link between apnea and GERD. The extra pressure on your diaphram caused by the CPAP pressure pushes the acid in your stomach back up your esophogus. If you have a hiatal hernia it is even worse. See your doctor for proper medication. Prilosec OTC works, but you need a doctor to prope...

The doctors tell me that 70% of patients are cured with the surgery that I had.
MMA can be done next and is very succesful, but it is not a surgery to be taken lightly.
What I had done is much easier than MMA.

krousseau,

You and I know who the clinic is. They are well respected.
Have you asked them why they do that?

Well I am back from my surgery and I have to agree with "Just had it done": the pain is tolerable and manageable and is not a reason to avoid the surgery, but I would recommend that anyone consider it very carefully. I didn't have much time before my surgery to describe it so here goes. I had previo...

Brian, The Stanford Sleep Clinic doctors that I saw prescribed an auto PAP machine for me to get rid of the aerophagia I had when I used a constant CPAP of 12 prescribed by them. So the premiere sleep doctors in the US understand that auto machines relieve aerophagia. The therapy is somewhat comprom...

robrdavis, krousseau is right on about the Stanford Sleep Center. I would see them if you possibly can. They know all there is to know about the problem. They are the third sleep doctors I have seen in the area and they are absolutly the best. Another good place is the Sequoia Hospital Sleep Disorde...
