Melatonin itself is useful for shifting the biogical clock if given at the proper time. However, it is not a good drug for pure insomnia- it has only about 25 % effectiveness for primary insomnia. Why is Rozerem, a melatonin agonist, effective for insomnia while melatonin isn't?? Nobody knows for s...

Hi Folks, Encore Viewer is indeed a real product. I spoke with John Goodman (Big John) today and he told me that he has worked closely with Respironics to get this to market. THANK YOU to our hosts for going to bat. This kind of attitude is good for the customers and good for the business, everybod...

How have you been able to deal with the tolerance and dependence issues that many sleep meds have? I ask because in discussing treatment options with my sleep doc he has suggested long-term use of one to alter sleep architecture. This suggestion I have not (yet) assented to. Knowing something about ...

This, I believe, is the European version of the Soyala. Interesting that they have more options and different headgear.

and HOW would that be different than the 10 cm pressure on straight CPAP he was on before? Or the settings below which are already well above that? His AHI only increases with pressure, not too hard to figure it out, if it don't work one way you try the other if things get worse you have gone the w...

This is my insurance company's policy also. I downloaded their coverage guideline off their website. It says c-flex = not medically necessary, failed cpap = you qualify for bipap and we'll pay. Their explanation is that there is only one small, flawed study showing c-flex is better than straight cpa...

You gotta get the software. Then you will be able to see minute-by-minute what pressures your apneas/hypopneas occur at and when happens as the machine responds to them. Right now you're stumbling around in a dimly-lit room. There is nothing like being able to SEE what is happening, it is a real "ey...

Good for Respironics. I wonder if someone put the heat on them and Resmed to pull their software because of the "create prescription" feature (I don't know if the Resmed or PB software has this feature). The action certainly seemed precipitate and Johnny Goodman's remarks below imply there may have ...

I have been trying a Soyala about 10 days now and found the silicone is harder than on the two other masks I've tried. Some of the comments on cpap.com for this mask say the same thing. It does seem to run small. I sized it carefully using the cpap.com sizing guide (mfr says it's the same size as So...

I use silicone earplugs, they are comfortable and block enough sound that I can sleep. Only thing is it's necessary to wash my ears as well as face before bed, otherwise they lose their stickiness rapidly.

Cotton or foam earplugs are also possibilities.

HMO's tend to be restrictive and only cover things from in-network suppliers. An HMO that lets you go out of network is usually called a POS plan (point-of-service, not the other meaning!). If you really have an HMO and not a POS you may be SOL for re-imbursement. You need to find out you plan provi...

BCBS is an association of independent insurance companies. Each one decides for itself what it considers medically necessary, what plans to offer and what they cover. One common element other than the name is a national "blue card" network where in-network providers for one BCBS company are in-netwo...
