For the Remsatar Auto the humidifier has to be restarted each time you turn the machine off, it doesn't function independently. So after you restart, hit the heat button and fire it back up, when the little green light comes back on, ya good to go........

I'm not familiar with the S8, the Remstars run on 12volt dc, it's just that the humidifiers require 120volt ac. So if you can get by without humidification a battery should run the machine for many days at 12volts.
