So I have been testing this yesterday. I have removed the mesh and it was exhausting more or less the same amount of air.
So probably its more to do with my fears then actual problem
After this experiment I had a good fearless night of sleep.

To me it looks like no air/CO2 is escaping at all. Maybe very little. It seems that all goes to the pipe and I inhale it back again.
