Hans Rudolph V2 Reviews   Ultra Mirage Full Face Reviews

It was a very comfortable mask. I did have problems getting the mask to seal through the whole night. I believe most of the problem was in the headgear. It appeared to stretch and become looser through the night. I liked how easy it was to unstrap it from the mask but the velcro I feel is inadequate. The velcro came loose a couple of times in the middle of the night. This mask is a lot easier to clean.

The headgear on this mask is a lot better. I am able to set it once and be able to maintain a good seal through out the night. It does have more parts to clean but I am able to buy a new mask cushion without having to buy a whole new mask. I will still continue to use this mask.

I liked the soft flexible material that is used to construct the Hans Rudolph V2. This material felt good against the face. I had a great deal of trouble getting the mask to seal properly and found out by reading the user instructions that it may not be suitable for men with beards. I have a full beard and am not willing to shave it off for a CPAP mask.

The Ultra-Mirage has the best set of adjustments of any mask that I have used. I especially like the swivel of the forehead cushion that allows me to tilt the angle of the mask for a very good fit with little leakage even when turning on my side in my sleep. The quick release and snap in place straps are very convenient. The forehead cushion does leave marks on my skin and is uncomfortable in pressing against my head when I tighten it enough for the best fit.

When I opened the box and looked at the HRV2, I thought the chin cup attached to the bottom of the standard-looking mask looked strange, but upon pressing it to my face, it actually was comfortable. I was looking forward to using it. I liked the fact that the entire mask was made of soft silicone, with a couple of hard plastic pieces for form rigidness and stability. The chin cup fit well, the top of the nose section did not intrude too much into my vision, and overall it felt good (as good, I guess, as a full face mask can). However, the down sides. First, the clips that attach the headgear to the mask are a bit awkward. They have a small tab which you grasp and the small attached button thereon fits into a keyhole shaped opening. The tab extends outward but is small and hard to fit into the hole at times. However, removing it was easy. Most importantly, despite repeated attempts to get a good seal, this mask would not seal against my face. The only way was if I yanked the straps so tight that my skin bulged around the straps, which was so uncomfortable that I could use the mask. Granted, I have facial hair and the instructions state that one with facial hair may have trouble getting a good seal. However, I even trimmed my small goatee to very short (using the electric trimmer on a #2 (out of 10) setting - a #0 is clean shaven), to no avail. Also, for some reason, this mask is much louder than the UMFF mask. I liked the concept and comfort of the chin cup, but unfortunately it did not work for me.

The UMFF mask is a hard shell of a mask. It is rigid and not too forgiving. I like the fact that the silicone seal blows out with air, as it kind of creates a pillow, but the size must be perfect for your face for it to be comfortable. The UMFF seals fairly well, but is not perfect. Like any mask, you have to play with it, but overall it is good. As for cleaning, it is cumbersome. It has a thin plastic rim that goes around the mask that holds the silicone in place. You have to remove this in order to take the silicone seal off to clean. Once, done, you have to put it back together, and I felt like I might break it if I was not careful. Because it has a large shell and the support system goes up to the forehead in a "T" shape, it blocked my vision a bit. But overall, it's a good mask.

Provided and Rated Size: Medium

I like the simpler design. The forehead support on the Ultra Mirage is very prone to breakage. I also like the softer silicone material. It is much easier on my face. Cleaning is a breeze. However I have to give the headgear a D+. It rubs my ears and does not seem to pull at a proper angle. Also, it is much noisier than the Ultra Mirage.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

Cleaning is a little harder. It is MUCH quieter. The headgear is more comfortable. The big issue with this mask is that it is very breakable. I like using the 2 masks on alternet nights, because the seals affect different areas of my face, lessening the redness and bruising.

PROS: 1) Easy to take apart and clean -- far fewer parts than the Ultra Mirage Full Face mask (UMFF); 2) Flexibility of Hans Rudolph V2 (HRV2) allows me to sleep more comfortably on my side than does the UMFF; 3) HRV2 keeps good seal UNLESS I have to move my jaw to "pop" my ears; 4) Headgear is well designed -- finding where to attach the clip is easier on the HRV2 CONS: 1) My nose rubbed against the mask, but perhaps I needed the next larger size; 2) Exhaust air blows straight out from the mask -- this disturbs both me and my wife -- the UMFF blows upward, which we prefer; 3) If I need to scratch my nose, I have to disconnect one of the straps -- with the UMFF, I can just slip my finger under the cushion; 4) If I move my jaw to "pop" my ears, the mask loses it's seal; 5) When the seal is compromised, I have to readjust the mask with my hands -- with the UMFF, a good seal can be reestablished easily by moving my head or jaw slightly. SUMMARY: I started using a full face mask in 1999. I've tried most of them. The HRV2 is superior to all that I've used except for the UMFF. Good job!, and thanks for the mask.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

PROS: 1) High comfort level -- the mask literally floats on a cushion of air; 2) Excellent stability due to well designed headgear, flex hinge, and forehead pads; 3) Exhausted air blows upward so as not to disturb me or my wife; 4) UMFF uses replaceable parts -- most replacement parts remain the same from model to model of mask -- this saves me money after the initial investment CONS: 1) UMFF is difficult to clean because it has a lot of parts to assemble/disassemble. Also, if the parts are not thoroughly dried, then they will "squeal" or otherwise make noises when reattached to the mask frame. If there's any moisture trapped in the cushion's groove, then it will leak air between the frame and the groove; 2) Because the mask frame is rigid, I have to cock my head slightly upward when laying on my side so that I don't break the seal; 3) If I don't keep both the cushion and my face very very clean, then the mask tends to lose it's seal -- it gets greasy with facial oils and slides around; 4) The exhaust port makes noise when installed upside down, and some of them make noise even when properly installed SUMMARY: The UMFF is the best mask I've ever used, and I've used most of them in the past nine years.

I was unable to use the mask. I tried to use it for 15 min at night 4 times but was unable to get to sleep. The top of the mask squeezed my nose and I felt claustrophobic. I didn't like the mask releases as much as the Mirage. I have used the Mirage, Mojo, and Flexi fit. The V2 was the only one that I needed to take off because I couldn't tolerate the mask.

The Mirage seal squeaks at times and keeps my wife awake. I like the forehead support of the mirage.

I like the wideness of the Hans Rudolph V2 better than the UMFF. It is wider at the mouth area than the UMFF. The V2 is very difficult to get sealed at high pressures (I am at 17). With a fat face, the chin cup is a little uncomfortable, and if i look down with the mask on, my chin pushes the mask away from my face. The clips that attach the headgear to the V2 cut into your upper cheeks if you have fat cheeks like I do. The tabs on the lower clips are also hard to grab if you are groggy (got up to go the bathroom) or have larger fingers. Not very easy to attach in the dark either. The UMFF has a guide type protrustion that helps you feel the location of where the clip should be inserted, the V2 was a lot harder to get attached, especially with the headgear having to be so tight to get a seal with a pressure of 17. Once I did get a seal with the V2, any movement, or when my face relaxed, would cause the seal to break and air come gushing out, loudly i might add.

I like the forehead support on the UMFF, with my high pressure, i feel like it allows me to tighten the headgear and moving in bed wont tug it around and break the seal. To be honest, that is the most important aspect of a mask, is its ability to maintain a seal throughout the night. I can make any mask seal while I am standing up, the real test comes when I lay down and my face relaxes and i start to move around. At a pressure of 17, the UMFF holds its seal quite well all night long.

The headgear that attaches to the mask is much easier reattach after removal than the ultra mirage. Cleaning is very easy. Although the mask itself feels comfortable, the seal was not good for my face. The headgear looks simple, but due to the seal issue it was necessary to tighten the upper straps which were located too close to the eyes making it less comfortable. Difficult to sleep on sides with this mask.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

The seal for the ultra mirage is very good. Sleeping on the sides is comfortable without leakage. Although the overall headgear is comfortable, the ease of reattaching the lower headgear to the mask is not as easy as with the Hans Rudolph V2. Cleaning is average, but reassembly is more difficult due to reattachment of the mask cushion with the cushion clip.

Likes: I liked the part that fits below the chin and the fact that there is nothing touching the forehead. The mask is very quiet. The connector from the mask to the tube is simple and works well and dose not detach easily. Dislikes: I did not like the headgear. The straps are thin and are too stretchy. I've had to tighten them almost every night to keep the seal from leaking. Having to remove that little flap when cleaning the mask is a pain. The connectors on the straps are very hard to use, especially when half asleep. The seals leaked when I shifted position. (laying on my side to laying on my back) I can usually adjust to a new mask quickly and fit it so it doesn't leak, but I have been unable to do that with this mask yet. I really had high hopes for the mask, since it was so quiet.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

Likes: The straps are thick and don't stretch much while wearing. The connectors are large and easy to use Dislikes: When I tighten the straps enough so the seals don't leak, the bridge of my nose hurts. Air coming out of the vents at the top of the mask blows directly on my eyes. If you're not careful when attaching the mask to the tube, the connector will not catch correctly and the mask can separate from the tube unexpectedly.

Very difficult to get and maintain the proper seal, especially around the chin. To get a proper seal meant to tighten the straps to an uncomfortable level, and then the seal was maintained only with a minimum of movement. Easy to clean.

Seals immediately and pretty much stays with a seal. Comfort is in getting good sleep. Easy to clean.

If I could have had better luck with sealing this mask to my face it would have a serious shot with me. It was very comfortable and that is important, just not quite as important as sealing. I have not had this unit very long but I do not have confidence in the headgear, velcro seamed kinda chincy to me. I like the flexability in the body of the mask seemed less likely to break and adds comfort.

I loved the design and the headgear. I loved not having a forehead brace. I loved the fact that you could wash this mask and have it dried and ready to use within a day. I think that I could have used one size larger since I had leaking only around the nose bridge. I found that I had to turn the humid control down since the mask sweat more. I will definitely try the next size up to see if I can achieve 100% on this mask.

This mask has great sealing and the biggest drawback is that you need two since it does not dry from cleaning in a day. It stays wet within the double seal and takes two days to dry. It is comfortable enough to use every day.

  By Challenge participant

Provided and Rated Size: Medium

Pros: Loved the lower chin support and the comfort and seal in provided on the lower face area. Very comfortable mask and put no pressure on the lower teeth. Cons: 1) Could not maintain a seal at thee bridge of the nose. As the mask shifted during the night, it was constantly leaking, no matter how loose or how tight I had it adjusted. I liked the lack of a forehead support, but that probably is what contributes less stability at the nose. 2) AAV protrudes into the airway which causes lots of noise when inhaling. Removing the AAV makes it one of the quietest I have ever used. 3) Because the exaust holes are in the elbow, the face area does not get constant fresh air. This caused a build of moisture when I ran the humidity at my preferred level.

Cons: This mask needs to be fairly tight which puts pressure on my lower teeth which starts to provide discomfort after a few days of use. Pros: Once adjusted, it provides a consistent seal all night.

I like that is more quite than the Ultra Mirage Full and keeps my mouth close all the time. My husband can see the difference. The only problem is that I order the small and should get the smallest size that small because the air came out on the top of my nose. The head gear mark my face more than the one Ultra Mirage Full mask.

The Ultra Mirage, make to much noise when I move and the air came out and my husband has to wake me up or move me in order to fix my mask and don't make to much noise. Also, I still snore with these mask and don't hold my chin like the Hans Rudolph V2. on't last too long and breaks easy.

It was less noisy My eyes did not have air going into them I liked having nothing on my forehead More comfortable on my nose If this one did not leak I would pick this one

Strap system makes it easier to take off and back on in the middle of the night The seal system is better with Hans if I moved my chin very much I would loose the seal Because I cannot stand a leak I would pick this one

Comfort was the biggest advantage to this mask, better than the Ultra Mirage which itself is reasonably comfortable. The soft, flexible nature of the entire mask reduced any pressure points on my face and allowed very fine fitting adjustments. I liked the fact that it fit over the whole face and under the chin rather than on the chin. This resulted in a more comfortable fit for me. Also, the lack of forehead support mode the mask less intrusive and didn't obstruct vision. The lack of hard plastic structure also seems to make it more durable and flexible for traveling, as I travel very frequently. The headgear was the only thing that detracted from the comfort. The straps were relatively thin compared with the Ultra Mirage and occassionally left me with a little discomfort on the back of my neck. Seal was pretty good but took some time to get the right adjustments to equal the Mirage, under higher pressures. But after finding the proper adjustments, it sealed fairly well even when changing sleeping positions frequently, somthing the Mirage did not do as well. The major disadvantage was the exhaust port and the noise . The mask doesn't seem to diffuse the exhaust in a manner that reduces the noise well. It was louder than the Mirage. However, the worst part is that the exhause blows directly away from the face at 90 degree angle rather than towards the top of the head as with the Mirage. This caused great discomfort for my spouse, restricting my sleeping positions. For this reason alone, I will likely have to use the Ultra Mirage when home but will prefer the Hans Rudolph when traveling as the noise and exhaust issue are not a significant factor for me when sleeping alone.

Rated Size: N/A

I have used the Ultra Mirage Full Face mask for some time and it is fairly comfortable. There were a couple of points, on the forehead and chin where there was noticable pressure when adjusted for a good seal but not particularly uncomfortable. The headgear on the the mask has wide soft straps which helps reduce discomfort. The mask is also relatively quiet, diffusing the exhaust quietly overhead. This allows me to sleep in any position without affecting my spouse. The seal on the Mirage is fairly good and took very little adjustment. However, the bottom of the mask does rest at a point on my chin that push my mouth open slightly when relaxed, resulting in some occasional snoring and a dry throat. The rigid mask and forehead support also can interfere with sleeping on my side without careful positioning of the mask. THe Ultra Mirage is not as durable as the Hans Rudolph due to the hard plastic structure and forehead support. While it has not been overly problematic, I have broken the the adjustment teeth on the forehead support a couple of times. Also, as I travel frequently, the rigid mask shell is less flexible when thrown into luggage. Since the Hans Rudolph has no forehead support and the entire mask is soft and flexible, it is more compact and durable for traveling.

Intriguing mask design, with built-in chin holder, and no stabilizer on forehead. Also, unlike Mirage, mask is made almost completely of flexible material. Your face fits much deeper into the mask. Felt heavier & bulkier than Mirage, but not unpleasantly so. Could not get it to stop leaking around cheeks. Leaked practically all night.

   By Challenge participant

Much smaller footprint. Felt lighter on face, and did not leak. I use a chinstrap with this mask, which I wouldn't with Hans Rudolph, but overall tradeoff more than worth it.

  By Challenge participant

Provided and Rated Size: Medium

I liked the seal around the chin, but found I really needed to keep this mask very tight in order to keep it sealed. I have a large face, and if the mask had been slightly larger it might have been less difficult. I don't think I would use this much in the future.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

This is currently my preferred mask. It is more comfortable than others I have tried. Although I would add that I still feel that the old Mirage II was superior to the Ultra. I liked the old headgear with the over the center of the head better. I deal with leaks unless I lay on my back.

This is so uncomfortable to wear and use. The straps are hard to manage and the fit is difficult. This was impossible to sleep with I could not get close to getting through the night. I would never purchase this product in fact I thought this was a joke on me it was so poor.

When I first put this mask on, I was impressed with the comfort. I like the chin support, since I always seem to breath through my mouth and I have yet to find a chin strap support that works for me. I sleep well with the V2 for about 4 - 6 hours, then leakage becomes a problem that wakes me at 3:00 or 4:00 am. I can't figure what changes during the night, but it is consistent. I tried tightening the straps. This stopped the leakage, but the comfort level drops. I had problems with aching in the back of my neck where the strap hits. I also experienced jaw pain, which I think is due to the tightened straps. One thing I particularly liked was that I did not wake up with dry eyes like is common with the Ultra Mirage. This mask has some possibilties that I would much prefer over the Ultra Mirage. I will continue to work with it, but at this time I would have to choose the Ultra Mirage over the V2. One other disadvantage is that the face membrane is not replaceable as with the Ultra Mirage.

I have used this mask for several years. While it is the best one I have stumbled on, using it is not a "smooth ride." The pressure points on my forehead are annoying from a comfort and appearance point of view. Leakage is always an issue. I usually wake with dry eyes due to leakage at the bridge of my nose. I like the fact that parts like the face membrane are replaceable. This offers some savings over purchasing a new mask.

I really liked the mask, but could not get a good seal on the sides of the mask without making it uncomfortably tight.

This mask scores well across most categories. It is not great in any of them but the fit is good

  By Challenge participant

Provided and Rated Size: Medium

The material on this mask was so sticky, it arrived in a sealed bag, but was still covered with dust. It stuck to my face, but was eventually painful to the skin. The mask does not use a forehead pad, which might be an advantage to some, but the shape of the mask did not fit my face.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

This mask is made of the softest material imaginable. It seals well, although it can get a bit slippery after a night of humidified air. A CPAP wipe (alcohol) before use gives the mask a perfect seal. The forehead pad reduces pressure on your face, but still allows for adjustment. The bottom of the mask pushes my chin back a bit more than I would prefer.

  By Challenge participant

Provided and Rated Size: Small

I can only rate the durability over a short period. I would have liked to try the next larger size to compare overall fit because we were sent a size smaller that our current mask and the larger size may have fit my face better. Overall, I think the mask was very comfortable due to the 'flexibility' of the mask. This mask was quieter. I definately will consider this mask on my next purchase.

I give the nudge to the Ultra Mirage, but only by a slim margin. I prefer the snap clips on this product better so I give the advantage to the Ultra Mirage. I experienced less 'seal' problems with this Ultra Mirage. The is definately more exhaust noise associated with the Ultra Mirage.

No matter what I tried, this mask had seal problems unless you sleep only on your back. I sleep on my side so the seal was constantly breaking. Also the headgear strap sits right under your eye, very annoying.

The mask was comfortable, and made a good seal, but any movement causes a loud, quick, leak. The flexible molded shell allowed you to use your finger to reach under the mask to scratch your nose or such, without having to remove the headgear clip. My main problem with the Hans Rudolph V2, is that your expelled breath did not clear fast enough. I found myself short of breath, especially later on in the night. Three nights I had to remove this mask and change over to my Ultra Mirage, in order to sleep the rest of the night. Only two nights did I manage to sleep all night with the Hans Rudolph. The head gear clips are flimsy and hard to attach when you're half asleep.

   By Challenge participant

This is a superior mask. It seals great, has an easy to use, and adjust head gear, and always has a fresh stream of air supply. I always sleep the whole night when I use the Ultra Mirage Full Face. The hard shell mask is a little uncomfortable at times, but does make for a good seal, that almost never leaks.

  By Challenge participant

Provided and Rated Size: Medium

The V2 has a smaller "footprint" which was quite nice. It is a soft-shelled mask which seemed to maintain fit and seal a bit better when side-sleeping with my face stuffed into the pillow. It was difficult at first to get the mask to hold its seal over the bridge of my nose by my eyes; however, repeated tweaking of the head gear finally resolved that problem. In the end, though, I was left with a very loud mask. The air noise was substantially louder than what I've experienced with any other mask and I've tried several. My wife was unable to tolerate the noise, so I've gone back to the Ultra Mirage. If not for the noise, I would have continued to use it in lieu of the Ultra Mirage.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

The Ultra Mirage is still the best mask I've found so far in terms of ease-of-use, fit, reliabilty and general quietness. My primary complaint is the noise it often makes when I shift positions in bed at night. The plastic parts will make creaking sounds which semi-arouse me or sometimes awaken my wife. I'd also like to suggest one improvement to the mask and that would be to make the forehead pad's range of adjustment more considerable so that the user can fine-tune the fit at the bridge of the nose. In my case, I'm currently left with three positions: (1) heavy pressure on the bridge of the nose, (2) A small mark on the bridge of the nose by morning which eventually disappears and (3) no seal around the bridge of the nose.

The Hans Rudolph V2 mask was soft and comfortable. I could not get a consistent seal and had terrible leakage problems. I had to discontinue using this mask after only one night. The headgear was more difficult to get on than the Ultra Mirage Full Face headgear. The mask clips on the headgear were quite difficult to connect and unreliable (became detached). I would not recommend nor purchase the Hans Rudolph V2 mask.

Rated Size: N/A

The Ultra Mirage Full Face mask has a very consistent seal and I've had very few problems with leakage. The headgear is easy to put on and comfortable. The mask clips are quite easy to connect and don't ever become detached while sleeping. The mask is not at all easy to disassemble and clean. The Hans Rudolph V2 mask was softer and more comfortable. I am very happy with the Ultra Mirage Full Face mask and would purchase it again.

It was fairly quiet when it was sealed. I really didn't like much about the V2. I could only keep a seal if I had the headgear cranked so tight that it hurt. Even with the headgear a little looser, the seal actually felt like it was cutting into my cheeks. The lower clips holding headgear to the mask kept coming loose when I was trying to put it on. Once it was secured it was ok. I was NOT able to make a full night with the V2 because of the continual leaking and the pain from the inner seal. It might be ok for someone that sleeps only on his/her back but I don't. I appreciate that a company wants to make a full face mask without a forehead support but it is a no-go for me unfortunately.

The headgear design is far supeior to the Ultra Mirage. The mask is smaller and lighter. The plastic seals are more durable and have a more ergonomic design. Initially, those features provided a comfortable, quiet sleep. However, the mask gets jostled easily, and loses it's seal and becomes very loud. So much so, that it outweighs all of the other superior features. If the seal/noise issue could be corrected, I would switch to Hans Rudolph immediately! PS: The main seal problems seem to be around the eyes and the chin.

The only thing that I was superior to the Hans Rudolph, was the seal, which of course is what produces a quiet sleep environment. The Hans Rudolph was better designed and more comfortable in every other aspect.

This mask leaks entirely too much and makes loud trumpeting noises as it leaks. I do not care for the low visibility due to the mask and position of the headgear. It is however, easy to use and durable.

Positive: I really liked that the bottom of the mask extended underneath my chin. It gave a sense of complete seal. Unfortunately the mask I received was a small which I think did not fit my face and caused it to leak and be uncomfortable. Negative: The HRV2 I was sent seemed to be too small for my face. Because of this my experience was very negative due to the fact that it caused pain and discomfort on the bridge of my nose. The straps were a bit strange and flimsy. They really did not snap into any type of locking mechanisim. I wish I could give a better review but the mask just did not fit correctly.

Positives: Very soft to the skin. Easy to use and clean. Seals well when sleeping on your back. Straps feel comfortable and snap lock. Negatives: For side sleepers it tends to leak. When it does leak it makes a sqealing noise that wakes me and my wife up. Also if you have facial hair it tends to not seal correctly.

Likes I like the fit. Mask sealed well on first fitting, but it would leave marks on face by morning, but no forhead piece was nice. Straps were comfortable. Mask quiet with cpap pressure (7) and exhale. dislikes mask is quiet except on inhale. narrow passage in elbow by valve. mask is noisy, very difficult to go to sleep. This was unacceptable for me. The Hans Rudolph V2 was very comfortable when I first put it on ,but when air was applied it leaked all over. I had to tighten the straps so much that it cut the bridge of my nose. I don't care much for the clips on the headgear. They are harder to use than the clips on the UMFF mask. I think the Exhaust ports should be moved around the nose area so that the co2 can be washed out better. After 3 hrs the first time I used this mask I woke up in a start and it felt like I had my head in a paper bag and suffocating. The second time I tried to use this mask I kept waking up because I couldn't get a good seal.

The UMFF has a superior seal compared to the HRV2. I have been using this mask for 2 years and seldom get any leaks even when pressing against a pillow. The headgear clips are easy and secure. It is high quality construction.

Comfortable soft mask, but had problems with seal (I guess I have a difficult face, prominent nasal bridge, but when sealed was quiet. BAD FOR MOUTH BREATHERS as under chin component needs to be pulled up TIGHT to keep pressuer off bridge of nose, for those like me with nasal congestion issues mask probably not the best option. Also headgear clips not the easiest. THANKS CPAP.COM

BEST seal I have found yet ! I guess I have a difficult face, prominent nasal bridge, but NO SEAL OR PRESSURE PROBLEMS with this mask. Have had a couple of pieces of this expensive mask break ( I admit I'm not super careful with it) and guess what they are EXPENSIVE to replace, BUT WORTH IT. THANKS CPAP.COM

The Hans Rudolph V2 is by far the best out of the five full face masks that I have tried. It has a very tight seal. The body of the mask is made of silicon and is soft and very comfortablle on the face. Since I have used this mask the bleeding sore and the tenderness on the bridge of my nose have disappeared. The mechanism that attaches the headgear to the body is very easy to use. The Hans Rudolph V2 does not have the uncomfortable forehead support that most full face masks have. This mask has a large chin support that keeps the mask in its optimal operating position. I can't thank CPAPtalk Product Challenge enough for introducing this mask to me.

The clips that hold the headgear to the mask are very easy to use and lock in tight. The Ultra Mirage body is about 75% hard plastic and is not as comfortable as a mask that is mostly silicon. This mask tends to irritate the bridge of my nose. The forehead support has four different positions. One must always be checking to be sure that it has not slipped out of its optimal oposition. Forehead supports are uncomfortable and troublesome at best. Also, the silicon pad for the forehead support is too loose and tends to become unattached. The Ultra Mirage does not seem to have as large an open and shut valve inside the elbo as other masks.

Likes: The headgear adjusts easily. But the snaps could be just a bit larger to grab. Nice feel and it seals fairly well except at higher pressure. Easy hose disconnect. I liked the chin cup. Cleaning is not that hard, I use the wipes from Cpap.com Dislikes: The chin cup hold a bit tight. To seal well at higher pressure it needs to be so tight it hurts the bridge of the nose. Size from eye to chin could be a little longer. The velcro straps seem to be cheap. I don't like the pictures that display this mask, they should be on a real person. Hate: the noise, not of the exhaust, that is very quiet. Inhaling is Very noisy and the biggest problem I had. I wish someone can make a mask that will fit the nose bridge. Price. In summary: If they make this mask quieter it will be a great full face mask.

Likes: comfortable except on the bridge of the nose. I like the quick clips. Seems very durable. Easy to disconnect hose. Dislikes: The seal is not the best. Especially the higher the pressure. Hurts the bridge of the nose because it has to be tight to seal. Noise on exhaling. Quiet when inhaling. Hate: Price. In summary: This is a good mask and because of the noise it is better then the Hans Randolph V2. Some changes are needed though.

I liked the attempt to redesign a full-face mask that takes pressure off the forehead and bridge of the nose but this design only traded one issue for a few others. A good feature is that the seal is very good on this mask. The worst feature, however, is the very uncomfortable irritation and pressure against the nostrils. With trying all of the available nasal inserts and all recommended adjustments the design of thie mask still made this very uncomfortable and I could not get used to it, causing me to lose a lot sleep. In spite of that, I keep giving it a try during several nights and just could not get used to it. Another negative is that the head strap design is poor. A strap on each side of the face comes up from below the back of the head and across the temples and runs against the corners of your eyes at your temples and is annoying and uncomfortable. You want to keep pulling the straps back toward your ears and away from your eyes! An attempt to get rid of typical nose bridge and temple parts supposedly is an advantage to those who wear eyeglasses, but my opinion is that if you are awake and reading then you don't NEED to be wearing your mask yet until you decide to go to sleep so for ANY mask, if you want to read in bed, just don't wear your mask until you are finished reading!!! I tried all of the available nasal inserts and all were uncomfortable during attempts to sleep. Finally, disassembling and reassembling this mask for cleaning is cumbersome and frustrating to get back together conveniently. Also, the exhaust air blows straight out from the fact instead of upwasrd toward the eyes which would be a great bother to anyone with a bed partner as it would blow the air right on their partner if they were facing them during sleep. (I am single and sleep aline, but this was my observation of what would happen.) There was nothing I really liked about this mask and I would not recommend it. The greatest negative was the discomfort and pressure against the nasal openings (the "nares").

I have tried a few full-face masks now and the Ultra Mirage Full Face mask is still my favorite and the one that I still choose to use regularly. It gives the best comfort, less, or at least equal, air noise compared to other masks, and is basically durable. The weakest area of durability is the plastic piece functioning as the forehead support...I had to replace on that broke once on this mask. One other small negative is the headband. It fits too high up on the back of the head and always "creeps" up to the top of the head during movement during sleep and I now have to fold it back down on itself at the back of my head so it rides lower on the back of my head. That is quite annoying and I wish they redesigned this so that the "pull" on the headband is straight back on the back of the head and not both back and upwards so it always rides up on you. Maybe they can make a smaller size because adjusting strap tensions does not solve this problem. The Ultra Mirage Full Face mask is reasonably easy to clean and re-assemble. The exhaust air blows upward toward the forehead and not outward toward a bedpartner and this is a good feature. I would recommend this mask to consumers, but would like to see improvements in headstrap design.

No adjustment could stop the chin seal from breaking when I lowered my chin to my chest, I always had to keep my chin up. This is a fatal flaw. The chin cup idea is good - It is nore comfortable than the "rest on top of chin" design used by Resmed & Respironics, but there are serious fit problems. Also the plastic strap attchements are too small, difficult to attach & seem to be too delicate for long term use. Someone with small hands may feel differently.

This is my current long term FF mask. The headgear is more comfortable and the latches for the straps are larger, stronger, and easier to use than the VRs. I like the positive "click" of engagement. The solid plastic that rests on top of the chin is slightly less comfortable than the VR, but provides an excellent seal. The slight extra comfort of the VR is useless if it won't seal. My previous long-term full face mask was a Respironics. I would rate the VR above the Respironics, but below the Resmed. I am sticking with the Resmed.

I really like the inner seal. Since the outer seal goes below the chin, it provides a tighter fit for the inner seal. The exhale seems to be easier with less resistance than the Ultra Mirage. Also, there is less leakage than with the Ultra Mirage and it is a little bit quieter. It took me a few nights to get the headgear adjusted just right, but it is easy to use and I like the slotted fitting for the attachment to the mask. When I remove the mask, I undo only the bottom left strap, using the pull handle. That makes it easy to slip it over my head while leaving the 3 other straps hooked up. When I put it on at night, I slip the headgear on and just attach one strap--very quick.

I liked the overall fit and seal of the Ultra Mirage and was pleased with its performance. Then I tried the Hans Rudolph V2 and found that it is even better. The Ultra Mirage leaks a little more at the inner seal and the breathing (exhale) is a bit more difficult, but it is still a good mask.

At first, I was very impressed with the comfort of the V2 mask. The head gear was exceptional, it includes a strap that runs over the top of my head keeping the headgear from moving down my neck while sleeping. All of these impressions changed when I turned on my CPAP unit. Once plugged in, the mask appeared very loud. This was because air was leaking around the entire sealing surface between the the mask and my face. Even after shaving and reasonably tightening the mask, it still leaked. I had to tighten the mask to a VERY high level before the mask would stop leaking. I did not expect this with a air pressure of only 9 in/h20. In the mask's defense, the mask did spread the load out evenly across my face, even when tightened to such a high level. Further, the mask was relatively quite after the leaks were sealed. The first night that I wore the mask, I woke up a couple house later with the mask taken off. I put the mask back on and was able to able to sleep remainder of the night. The mask left a large amount of marks on my face in the morning. On each of the second-fourth nights that I tried the mask, I ended up taking the mask off at some point through the night. Evidently, I could not manage the tension required to keep the mask leak free. Overall, I could not use the mask. I did, however, switch the headgear over to my Ultra Mirage mask. The headgear design works very well.

This was my first full face mask, and I was pleasantly surprised how well the mask seals against my face. The mask does, however, place a significant amount of pressure against my cheek bones, but the pressure has not caused any sleeping related issues. The design of the headgear does not work the well for me. While the headgear is well made, it rests fairly low on my head such that the tilt of my head tightens and loosens the mask. The headgear could beneficially use a strap that passes over the top of the head to hold the other straps higher. Overall, this mask works very well. with a change to the head gear, this mask could work even better.

There first 2 nights i wore it when I woke up my c-pap machine said that there was a high volume of leakage. So, I tighing up the head gear and then I was left with marks on each side of my face that didn't go away for about 4 hours. I really did like the softness of the whole mask. When I first open it, I couldn't wait for bed time. I thought,WOW this is too good to be true, It is so soft, it has to be comfortable. But, I had to tighten it so much. To keep it from leaking. Maybe I had the wrong size mask. I had a size small. My if I had a X-small to try, I could give you a better rateing. Just by looking and feeling the Hans Rudolph V2, I thought it was the answer to the most comfortable mask, i would have ever put on. But, because I had to tighten it so much. It left marks. If you have another challage with this mask please send me a X-small to try. I could also still watch TV with this one.

This product is okay other than leaving marks on your face. You can't do anything after you put on the Ultra Mirage Full Face because you can't see. So, for get watching a little TV before falling off to sleep. I did get a good fit, and there was no leakage with this one.

The Hans Rudolph V2 has a nice low-profile design. However, no matter how hard I tried, I could not get a consistent seal. Because of this I cannot recommend the device. Perhaps mine was faulty somehow.

The Ultra Mirage Full is a pickup truck of face masks. It isn't built to look pretty, it's built to get the job done. The mask is a pain to clean and looks like some gigantic engineering project gone wrong. However, it works well and I get a consistent seal and a good night's sleep. It gets the job done.

The mask was very durable and easly to clean. I liked the compact size. It fit my face well, but it often leaked at night even after multiple ajustments. My sleep was often interrupted. From time to time, it also made my face sore in the morning. The headgear was difficult for me. The attachments were too small, the orientation too confusing, and much too hard for a quick exit from the mask and especially the headgear. The instruction booklet was poor. It especially needed effective headgear steps, and clear diagrams. The botom line: This is the most uncomfortable and difficult mask I have ever worn.

This mask was comfortable, easy to use and gives high quality performance. The adjustable forehead pads and superior headgear with easy large attachment clips ensured comfortable placement on my face with no leaks, no night interuptions, and no morning creases or pain. Quick exit from the mask was effortless. The instructional material with the mask is an excellent CD that made correct use possible in a few minutes. A professional CD like his one should be provided with every mask on the market. The botom line: This is the most comfortable and function mask I have ever worn.

Pros: • One piece unit (mask is all in one self contained unit). • Gasket membrane design seals well. • Built in chin cup / chin rest helps keep mouth closed & prevent morning “dry mouth”. • Cleans easy. Cons: • CO2 venting port is designed into the hose / mask adapter. The air is vented forward (directly away from you). If you sleep on your side and face toward your spouse / boyfriend / girlfriend, the vented air is aimed directly at them which could significantly bother your bed partner. • Mask was considerably noisy. There was a constant “whistle” which came from the same venting / exhaust ports. It was like sleeping with someone blowing a small whistle all night. Very disruptive. • The hook and loop ends of the lower mask straps are made of a plastic type material and, while still flexible, is still rigid enough to irritate your cheekbone. I had to use “Snuggle Straps” (distributed by cpap.com) to cushion the straps and provide some comfort when evaluating this product. • Difficult to follow in box directions. No CD or DVD on proper use. Pictures provided in users guide were not clear enough. • Directions for using mask indicate that the upper mask straps need to be placed below your ears an above your eyes. This uncomfortable as it felt like the strap was sliding up onto the corner of my eye(s).

Pros: • Comfortable and easy to use headgear. • Parts are easy to disassemble and clean. • Very rugged. I have had the same mask for 2 years and travel frequently. I have only replaced the main and forehead cushions in this time. Thiis considerably less then having to purchase a whole entire mask assembly. • Disassembles and reassembles quickly making it convenient for travel. • Large clips on the headgear straps make getting the mask on and off easy in the middle of the night. • Very quiet. Low noise. • CO2 exhaust vents upwards (towards your forehead) and, if you sleep on your side, would not blow towards your bed partner. • Comes with a detailed CD with good instructions and lots of close up video showing how to use mask properly. Cons: • No chin cup / chin rest. • The hook and loop ends of the mask straps are made of a plastic type material and, while still flexible, is still rigid enough to irritate your skin. I use “Snuggle Straps” (distributed by cpap.com) to cushion the straps.

This unit had a soft, flexible frame, so any good fit never stayed for long. Leaks were noisy and unpleasant, right down to farting sounds. It is too heavy, and has awkward connections for the headgear. I was able to get it to work for short periods, but then on removal I found large sweaty areas under the unit, especially if used with a humidifier. This unit will not be my unit of choice in the future.

   By Challenge participant

This unit works well except for the design of the nose prongs. Even the large diameter prongs become dislodged from the nose easily. The mouth cover will often cause the mouth to open. This unit was superior to the Hans Rudolph, but I still find myself using the Ultra Mirage II nasal mask along with a head band - a less than ideal system.

I think that the V2 is a good mask, I had some issues with the seal. I liked the full chin piece, and I thought it would be great, it did not inprove the overall sealing of the mask to my face.

I liked the soft mask body, at least at first. The head gear seemed to sit in place better on my head than the Mirage's head gear, and connecting the strap at night was very easy. I liked the chin guard - it helped keep my mouth from opening in the night and I woke with less issues of serious dry mouth. The seal wasn't that good, probably due in part to my beard. However, I tend to sleep on my side, and just as I got the seal set good, as soon as rolled over the mask would deform and lose the seal. Another difference was the air outlet - it seemed much less diffuse in the Hans Rudolph and i felt a direct stream of air on my face. As I moved and the swiveled turned, I could feel the stream of air move to a different area on my face.

The Ultra Mirage was very easy to fit and get a good seal right from the start. I liked the QD buckles on the sides for taking the mask on and off (my previous mask lacked these) allowing me to adjust it once and forget it. I d find the buckles aren't as intuitive to locate and hook up as I thought they would be, and some nights are a bit frustrating getting the mask on. The adjustable forehead support made for more comfort and a better seal than I had experienced with my previous mask. Likewise, the wide forehead support made for more comfort. On the downside, the wide forehead support also served to dislodge the mask just enough to lose the seal when I rolled on my side. The mask also seems to be creaky, with parts squeaking as I move. This seems to be improving with time, though. Getting the head gear just right hasn't been a breeze, either, and the headgear tends to slip on the back of my head if I turn my head while lying on my pillows, breaking the masks seal. Finding a balance between security and comfort can be elusive.

Our Comments

The results of this 3rd CPAPtalk Product Challenge between the Hans Rudolph V2 Full Face Mask and the ResMed Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask show that often the smallest details can make the difference. The participants displayed a great deal of dedication and most provided very detailed responses to their experiences with both products. It is very clear that CPAP users want products that work well, are comfortable, and easy to use. The responses of the 50 participants are excellent and we strongly encourage you to read them all. They are essential reading for all whose job it is to develop improved CPAP interface products.

With 44 out of 50 votes, the Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask clearly won this match. While it was not excellent in any one area, it did win in every category but one, with mostly Above Average ratings. Some participants complained about cleaning being difficult and about parts that squeak when moving around at night, and parts breaking on occasion. But, the categories that seemed to give the UMFFM the real edge were Seal and Headgear. Most participants could get a good seal with the Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask and felt the headgear and headgear clips were better than the Hans Rudolph V2 mask.

Interestingly, many people seemed to like the overall concept of the Hans Rudolph V2 Full Face Mask. They liked the fact that it is a very soft mask, without a forehead support, that there is a built in chin cup, and that it is easy to clean. However, practical use proved problematic for most. With few exceptions, most participants could not get an adequate seal with the HRV2 mask, often finding leaks at the chin or the bridge of the nose. Other common remarks were that the headgear and headgear clips on the HRV2 masks were not well designed and difficult to use, and a few mentioned that the headgear goes right across the side of the eye area, causing discomfort. Another persistent issue seemed to be the location and direction of the exhaust flow, which apparently blows directly onto bed partners. Noise, usually related to the leakage problems, was also a significant issue.

As shown by the comments submitted for both masks, there were very high complaint rates on relatively simple and inexpensive aspects of the overall design. The participants also pointed out a host of problems related to overall design considerations.

We do want to note that a handful of participants mentioned size possibly being an issue with the HRV2 mask. The Hans Rudolph V2 does run one size larger than the Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask. For example, we were told by the manufacturer that a Small Hans Rudolph V2 mask would be approximately equal to a Medium Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask. We also verified this information for ourselves before launching the Challenge. We explained in a letter included with the Hans Rudolph V2 masks shipped to participants why they were being provided a mask one size smaller than the UMFFM size they had indicated they normally wear. We also made certain they could contact us to get a different size if they truly felt like this was an issue. A couple of people did ask for another size and it was sent to them immediately. Because of these size differences, we want to be clear that we made every effort to make sure that size was not a factor in this Product Challenge and we believe we were successful in that endeavor.

These CPAPtalk Product Challenges have proven rich with insight and have given nuggets of gold to the sleep treatment manufacturers around the world who design and sell these products to CPAP users. We hope they are listening and working hard to improve their products to make your sleep therapy as comfortable and effective as it should be.
