The Mirage has a thicker cushion and seals better for me. It does not have to be as tight. I also like the forehead adjustment dial as it has more positions and is easier to ″fine tune.″

The ComfortGel seems to clean a little easier. I have used these masks for several years and was not expecting to find one better. It is very similar to the Mirage, but just not quite as comfortable to me.

Provided and Rated Size: Large Wide

Even though I have the Mirage SoftGel Large-Wide mask, it is quite a bit narrower than the ComfortGel Large (non-'wide')mask, and the Mirage SoftGel fits me much better. It's obvious that there is no common standard among mask makers for any given size (small, medium, large, narrow, wide, etc).
The Mirage SoftGel has a quieter air exhaust port, has a better fit & seal, and has 24 positions of adjustment for the forehead support pad versus only 4 positions on the ComfortGel. This adjustability is critical for getting the right seal and fit. The Mirage SoftGel mask extends farther from your face than ComfortGel, so it is a little more bulky, but not a problem for me. This mask worked better for me, and I consider it a more advanced design, when compared to the ComfortGel. My wife likes the Mirage SoftGel better than the ComfortGel because she says that she hears less noise (from my mask). Bottom line, the Mirage SoftGel Nasal CPAP Mask is a winner!

The large size mask is the only ComfortGel big enough for me, but it is too wide to conform & seal my upper lip area without excessive tightening of headgear. I have had quite a few masks of this model in the last few years, and have used their custom fit procedure (boiling water, etc) several times, but even the best result still allowed air leaking and blowing into my eyes. I like the design of the clever headgear attachment on the ComfortGel. It works simply & easily. The forehead support pad is not as conforming, adjustable and comfortable as the Mirage. Bottom line, ComfortGel needs to make some improvements to keep up with the advanced new Mirage SoftGel.

OK, I'm a convert.

I thought I would have to get accustomed to this new mask over several days, but after one night I was hooked. I didn't have to "heat and fit" the gel cushion to my nose!

Now I can keep the headgear a little looser on my head, because the cushion does what it's supposed to do -- stop air leaks WITHOUT extra pressure from the headgear.

The only draw back I found was the placement of the forehead rest. it sits low on my forehead and partially on my eyebrows. (I wear the Small-size mask, so maybe it's different on larger masks.)

I feel reluctant to rate the "durability" because I have not had the mask long enough to actually test the durability, but it feels fairly tough and the forehead adjustment knob is much more stable than the click-slide on the Respironics ComfortGel (CG) mask. The plastic clip that hold the nasal cushion in place seems a little light-weight, but strong, and dead easy to unclip from the mask -- a lot easier to remove than the Respironics CG nasal cushion/silicone flap connector.

I looked up the replacement parts and found that the SoftGel double nasal gel cushion is less than the nasal cushion parts on the Respironics CG mask ($31 compared to $32.50 on CPAP.com). But they don't offer separate parts that I could see... however, I'm not sure that it matters, I usually replace both pieces at the same time of the Respironics cushion/flap anyway.

I also found that the nasal cushion did NOT crease my cheek/nose leaving behind red marks that can take hours to disappear like the Respironics CG mask does, so that's a BIG plus.

The headgear is about the same as the Respironics mask, but the attachments to the mask have a nice little push-button clip, instead of the ball-joint clip. (I hope it lasts a long time.) I noticed that I could fit my Respironics headgear into the clips, though, so I might try it later on to see if it works as good or better, since the Respironics headgear is less expensive ($18 vs. $31).

The noise level is lower than the Respironics mask. No swooshing cool air down along the hose either. It's nice not having the cool air blow over my arms at night, if I have them above the covers, that is.

If the nasal cushion lasts as long as the Respironics cushions, then I'll be extremely happy with my new mask.

Well... Competition is good!

I think I've now switched masks, but below are some comments I've made in the past:

When Respironics came out with this mask, it was superior to anything else I had used before.

The cushion really reduced air-leakage and the adjustable forehead rest worked very well. However, I did have to "heat and fit" new Respironics gel nasal cushions every time I got one, and that was literally a pain in the nose.

My biggest complaint was the creases and red marks that the nasal cushion left on my cheek and nose that would sometimes take hours to disappear the next day. In order for leaks to be kept to the absolute minimum, I had to wear the headgear a little tighter, and that may be the source of the red marks, but leaks were worse.

The mask is a lot quieter than almost any other mask (except for the new Mirage SoftGel mask). However, the exhaust air can be cold on exposed body parts, like arms, chest, etc.

Prices have come down a lot since I first bought the mask, but when buying parts separately, you'll pay more that buying the whole mask -- if you could buy all the parts separately, that is. Not all parts are available separately, just the nasal cushion and the headgear.

The nasal cushion and silicone flap were easy to clean, once you get them off the mask. I broke one of the silicone flap's plastic/acrylic connectors once -- luckily, I had a spare.

If I forget to buy a new Mirage SoftGel mask, cushion, etc., I'll have a reliable, if somewhat less comfortable mask, but I don't think I'll be buying any new Respironics ComfortGel masks in the future.

When I started on a CPAP 20 years ago I never dreamed designs would progress to this point. I have always used the challenger and appreciaed their product, but when you alternate between two models night by night you quickly discover the one you look forward to using. I really love this mask for a number of reasons including:

1. THE WONDERFUL SEAL! Operating at APAP pressures running continuously from 16-20 I have had my fill of what I thought was the unavoidable leak (and associated air-frozen eyeballs, ″facial flatulence″ blowouts, and wind-chilled spouse syndrome (my dear, sweet wife often gets caught in the draft). Over the years I have grown permanent tight strap creases in the back of my head and learned to sleep with my hand cradled over the mask pushing it into my face. I thought it was about as good as it was going to get but this mask's seal works much better on my face – probably due to a thicker, stiffer jell understructure and wrapping the silicone outer skin farther around and into the mask. This one RARELY leaks.

2. The screw-in adjustment on the forehead makes it easier to micro adjust-in-place without pulling the mask off. The first company that develops a screw-adjusted strap with that kind of ease & control could become my new favorite.

3. The clip-in/out strap on the mask on the Mirage is great, but also causes some issues (below).

4. The whole seal assembly pops out in once piece for easy replacement or cleaning by pressing 2 tabs. No more worry I am going to crack my mask by trying to fix it.

Now the parts I didn't like as much as the competitor –

1. The forehead pad is built like a big rigid suction cup assembly reducing cooling airflow to skin. The competing ComfortGel mask is engineered more like a car bumper - providing FLEXIBLE resistance (cushion) against your forehead with minimum rubber to skin contact. Both are a big improvement over the old gel pads – always first thing to go blow out on my old masks.

2. The Mirage shiped with a strap that was not long enough to fit my head comfortably (a first for me). It did stretch out & loosen enough after a few minutes to get comfortable, but I still use it out as far as it can go. Interestingly it is the exactly same length as the competitor but they need to make allowance for the increased depth of the seal assemblies (2" vs 1-3/8") and the way the strap clips connect - adding or reducing effective strap length.

Rated Size: N/A

I have always used Respironics masks, and appreciate the continuous product improvements – including elimination of the protruding Oxygen ports, how much quieter it is, and replacement of quickly leaking forehead gel pads for silicone. I really like the swivel action on the head strap clips that make it easy to ″un-twist″ kinks when they get flipped, but the down side is they are not as easy to unclip when on your head. The cushioning forehead pad is also superior to the competition, though the sliding adjustment mechanism is not as stout or adjustable when you are wearing it as the competition. The improvements in the head band are much appreciated to. Using thinner ″hook″ portions on the Velcro means they no longer have to line up perfectly with each other (hard to make happen when on your head so you can't see them) to avoid them scratching on your skin. I found though that the seal was not as good, at least not for my face shape and with the high pressures. This mask is less expensive, but some details like thicker plastic parts shouldn't add too much to the price. Only time will tell about durability on both.

Both of these masks are very good. I have used the ComfortGel masks for a couple of years. The SoftGel mask seems slightly bulkier than the ComfortGel mask but it is not bad. The headgear has different systems to attach but both work fine. I might try the SoftGel mask again after I use the two ComfortGel masks that I already have depending on the price.

The Mirage SoftGel is quieter.

The Mirage SoftGel is more comfortable relative to the gel part.
However, the ″small″ mirage is a bit too big for my face, so the ComfortGel ″petite″ is a better fit, size-wise.

I prefer the Mirage headgear. It looks almost identical, so maybe it is the material, but it stays in place better and my hair is not attacked by the velcro on the straps as often.

Connector Durability:
I prefer the ComfortGel quick release system. Maybe just because I'm more used to it. However, my husband, who also wears ComfortGel, has broken the connectors on 3 masks in the last year.

I wear a ″petite″ ComfortGel. They sent a ″small″ Mirage SoftGel. (I assumed that Mirage does not make a petite.) Size-wise, the ComfortGel fit my face better as the Mirage encroached on my lower eyelids and upper lip.

I have used the comfortgel for about six years and found it to be a reliable and comfortable mask. I just feel the Mirage SofGel was a little more comfortable and quiter. I do like the clasps for putting on and taking off on the ComfortGel a little better.

This was a very nice mask, it fit well, cleaned nicely, and was very quiet. If the price is low enough, I will consider switching from ComfortGel. However, I have used the ComfortGel for over 10 years, and price is always going to be the biggest incentive.

Overall, a very good mask!

The size is very small compared to the ComfortGel. I use a Large ComforGel, and the Large-Wide Mirage SoftGel is noticably smaller. I had no problems using it, the ComfortGel just seems to have much more room.

Great design, very easy to use and adjust.

I like the way the 'pillow' is easily removed from the frame. Good design, and makes it easier to clean.

The feel of the ComfortGel can't be beat. it fits perfectly, seals perfectly, and is very quiet.

The biggest downside, is that no matter how careful I am, I can only get a few months of out a mask. The socket connecting the bottom of the headgear is very poorly designed. As far as I'm concerned, just a flat-out manufacturing design defect.

Right off the bat the mask was comfortable and created an excellent seal. The nose compartment is a little deeper than the comfortgel. I can see in some cases this would be good, but for me it just caused the lower portion of the mask to ″roll under″ which after some time with the mask on it became uncomfortable. The mask does not have any adjustment feature at the bridge of the nose to change the angle it fits on your face. If so, I think the ″rolling under″ problem could be eliminated. The headgear was very firm. It had little or no stretch to it. I wondered if it was a little more elastic, could I loosen the bottom enough to help the fit also.

I hope I wasn't just too spoiled with my comfortgel mask. By trying a different mask, I realized some of the features I really like in the comfortgel mask. The adjustment feature on the bridge of the nose apparently really important to me. If it is too tight on the bridge of your nose you can move the setting to put more pressure on the lower portion of the mask. (on you upper lip) This adjustment changes the angle the comfortgel material contacts your face. The stretchiness of the head gear is also a feature I enjoy. It allows a little more room for error when setting the straps to the correct length. Overall I will continue using the comfortgel nasal mask as it has provided me the best performance.

The seal is really good, and it feels very comfortable yet firm to use. However, I did not like the connecting device used from the strap to the mask. I thought it's not as easy to put on and take off as the ComfortGel's clip.

Was very surprized at how well this mask was. Other masks tried in the past I returned within in two days but not this one. I really liked this mask. The seal, head gear, comfort was all spot on.

There were only 2 things that I would change to the product. These 2 things are very minor and would not stop me from buying the product in the future.

1) The swivel arm which connects the mask to the tubing, squeaked when the arm twisted. It would loud enough to wake me up at night. I applied a light amount of vegetable oil around the outside of the arm which took care of this issue for the rest of the test period.

2) I would increase the length of the swivel arm and move the exhaust air port up more. The exhaust air leaves the swivel arm at the 90 degree elbow, this is only to minimize the air leaving the mask from blowing on my arm at night. While this occurs with both masks it happened more times with this one. I also found this shorter arm length to hold up the arm from moving as I moved at night. This happened 2 maybe 3 times during the test period. Not a problem so much as a recommendation.

The size of the mask is slightly larger for the equivalent comfortgel mask size. Took a couple of nights to get used to given that I have basically only used the confortgel mask before. I believe if the testing period was longer that seal performance of the mask may outlast the comfortgel mask.

Real like the clips that hold the headgear to the mask. These are more clicks rather then the ball joint connection found on the comfortgel. To me either, I would select a mask with connection type. Was very easy to get the mask on and off easy day.

Really like the top head support on this product over the comfortget. It is a single piece where the comfortgel is 2 different pieces. The pads which touch my forehead are smaller and touched the forehead in less area. I found this to be more comfortable. The adjustment to the ankle of the mask at this point is a dial rather then slots found on the comfortgel.

Overall, this is a great product. I have become very selective when it comes to which mask I use and if I had to select pick this over any other mask other than than the comfortget I would pick this one. It really would not even be a decission.

There is a price different of about $20.00 between this mask and the comfortgel which is not major buy enough for me. The bag that comes with the mask is enough to justify soending the extra money for this product. The bag is a very nice well designed product to keep the mask safe and clean when not in use.

While I plan to continue to use the ComfortGel mask, I am planning on starting to alternate between the two when I replace the mask. In order to continue using both products over a longer period of time than just the testing period. It was nice to have change the mask up over the test period and clearly would purchase this mask if the comfortgel was not available or I wanted to make a change.

This has always been my mask of choice. Overall never had any issues with this mask. Read reports of the ball connections for the headgear to the mask breaking but I have never had this problem since using a CPAP.

Given the above the only issue I have ad with this mask is the top head support which touches my forehead has seperated from the arm which holds it to the mask. While I believe this is more the result of how I have the headgear on, did not have this problem at all with the Mirage Softgel mask. Very frustrating when in the middle of the night this top head support comes apart and trying to put it back together in the dark. While it happens so rarely it was something that was accepted and once I fixed the problem re-adjusted the headgear so avoid this happening again.

Seal, comfort, headgear, and all items other then that listed above are great with this mask.

The gel part of this mask is smaller then the Mirage Softgel and I could see the life of this gel being shorter then the Mirage Softgel gel. If a mask is changed out as recommended this is not an issue at all.

Being very selective on which mask I used, the Miarge Softgel performed as well as the comfortgel mask. I plan to continue to use the Comfortgel mask since there is no compelling reason to make a change. That being said, I do plan to start alternative between the comfortgel and Mirage SoftGel mask when replacing the current mask.

This was the easiest mask I have ever encountered for fitting. It has a ″dial in″ knob that very quickly put the mask at just the right angle. Because of the great fit, the seal was excellent. I am a side sleeper and sometime knock the mask loose. That happened very rarely with this mask.

The mask felt heavy on my face the first night. After a few nights, I got used to it and that didn't bother me.

Overall, a very good mask. I'll be switching to this one.

The Comfort Gel has always been comfortable. My only complaint about it is that after a month or so of use it is prone to leaks. I knock it loose several times during the night and am aware of having to reposition it.

I prefer the ComfortGel's release mechanism over other brands. The little ball catch is always fast and I don't have to fumble to slip the clasp in the right slot.

This is a nice mask, but when turning and laying on my side, it tended to leak and cause me to wake up or wake up my spouse who woke me up. Laying on your back, this mask rocks.

  By Challenge participant

Provided and Rated Size: Small

Overall it's a good mask. The thing I liked the best was the ease of adjusting the forehead piece by turning the small dial. This design also allowed many more settings than the ComfortGel and allowed more precision is adjusting. The major drawback of this mask is the placement of the forehead piece. It sits much lower on my forehead - it sits right above my eyebrows, while the ComfortGel forehead piece sits up near my hairline. The SoftGel forehead piece sometimes gave me a pressure headache and I had to move it farther up on my face, which made keeping a seal across the bridge of my nose difficult. I tend to turn on my side or 3/4 front while I sleep, and this made the pressure worse on my forehead. If that arm holding the forehead pad were a little longer, or were adjustable to sit higher on my forehead, I'd be harder pressed to pick a winner. Other than that, I really liked this mask. It's quiet, comes apart easily for cleaning, and the gel forms a nice seal, with the exception of the bridge of my nose as described above.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

This is a quiet, easy to clean, and mostly comfortable mask. The downside is that I do sometimes get marks on my face from pressure points and I sometimes wake up with puffy eyes if I develop a small leak in the seal overnight. But it provides me a good night's rest. The deciding factor between these masks, for me, is the forehead piece. The ComfortGel's forehead piece sits much higher on my face - near my hairline - than the SoftGel. This prevents pressure headaches and allows me to sleep without waking up to adjust the mask to relieve the pressure.

I liked the mask overall, but the way you have to slide the clips from the headgear in to the mask itself is not easy. The only way I could do it is to have all the straps clipped in and stretch the straps to wear the mask.

It's a very easy set up to use. Easy to put on and take off, the clips are easy to remove and put back on at night without having to turn on the lights to see what you were doing.

I found the mask heavy and not as flexible. The dial didn't quite give me the adjustment I needed.

A very good seal. Leaks are minimal, even when side sleeping.

The gel cushion was soft and comfortable.

The headgear clips worked easily on and off. The headgear did not need to be tight to hold the mask in position.

Headgear soft and didn't leave facial marks.

Very quiet.

Would definitely consider this mask with my next purchase.

   By Challenge participant

The adjustable bridge is definitely a plus for a better fit.

The ″rolling″ attachment of mask to forehead pad gives the mask more flexibility.

I have seen improvement in the Ball and Socket Clips, but still had a socket break off, which then makes the mask unusable.

Experience leaks as a side sleeper. I find that I always have a hand on the mask, holding it in place.

A great mask for the price, and still an excellent choice.

It was a great seal but at the price of an overly bulky seal. When compared to the Comfort Gel Nasal CPAP mask it seemed to have a better seal. However, this could be explaned by the Mirage mask was new while the comfort gel mask was about 1.5 months used.
The headgear was a little difficult at first to connect. I use a sleep mask which goes on under my nasal mask. Once on I have to connect by feel. In this case the ComfortGel mask ball and socket connection was superior.
I did like the adjustable ridgid head rest on this mask.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

I like the size of the ComfortGel Nasel Mask and especially like the headgear connection. The hook up is a ball and socket connection and can easily be connected from a number of angles.
I don't like the floating head rest on the comfort gel mask.

  By Challenge participant

I found the Mirage SoftGel to be very comfortable and easy to adjust. I felt that the mask was very quiet. It the ease of the side latches which make it very easy to get on and off. Loved the adjustable knob to get the fit just right. In comparison of the 2 masks, I had no complaints with the Mirage.

Since starting c-pap therapy, I have been using this mask. It is easy to clean, but the seal is not always reliable throughout the night. If too much moisture gets in the mask, it makes a loud whistle sound which can be very annoying for myself and my partner. I do not like the side ball & socket latches as they break very easily.

  By Challenge participant

Provided and Rated Size: Small

The entire mask and headgear apparatus was very comfortable once locked on. The clip for the mask to headgear is very secure but a bit of overkill. Took me long time to get used to it and get it positioned just right to clip it in. The sound was definitely dampened by the thick cushion mask. Very comfortable. Easy to sleep in. The seal was difficult to get right. The small mask seemed to be too large for me. My husband who wears a comfortgel also, is wanting to try this one. His face is larger and needs something that doesn't hug his nose so tight.
The forehead support is too low on my face. There is no way of moving it up or down; so it sits on my eyebrows.

   By Challenge participant

Since I started with ComfortGel, this is pretty much all I know. The clip from headgear to mask has always been of poor quality. They have recently changed it and I have not had it long enough to make any long-term judgement. The sound of the air coming through the mask has always had a restful sound for me. It is like the rush of air in a moving car. I have always slept well while riding in a car. This mask has always been just a bit too small, but the small is too big. Since I am sleeping most of the time, it is not much of a problem. I will continue to wear the ComfortGel only because of the ease of getting it hooked on.

Be careful with the mask size comparison- I take a Medium Comfort Gel (CG) but a large Mirage Softgel (SG), which CPAPtalk warns you about. That said, the SG mask is rather bulky and is about a half inch ″higher″ in profile, so that if you sleep prone (face down) and move your head side to side, you have to raise your head up that much higher. No big deal, but when you first see the SG mask, it looks huge! Both are easy to clean with a slight edge up for the SG as there is no space down between the gel piece and the cover where as on the CG there is & you have to be sure to dry this area. I use the CPAP mask wipes which do the job well. My wife did complain that the noise with the SG was louder- ″sounds like you're breathing down a pipe″ that she doesn't hear with the CG. Might be related to the exhalation port size, but I don't really know. It was much easier using the snap in strap attachments on the SG compared to the CG- in fact, I just unhook the Velcro on the CG as those little ball attachments were cumbersome to use in the dark. As for durability- too early to really say how it will hold up after only 3 weeks of use. The SG forehead support is easily adjusted by a turn knob, but I didn't really have to adjust it. Again, not sure how durable that will prove to be.

Luckily I had recently replaced my CG mask - which I love that you don't have to purchase a whole new mask every once in a while (every 6 months?)- so this comparison was quite timely. I always loved my CG mask- been using one for years, but the Mirage SG will be my new favorite. The CG was quieter overall. The CG straps seemed had to be tighter to prevent leaks- those strap marks lasted a while in the morning compared with the SG. The Comfort Gel nasal mask is a great mask, but I would say the Mirage SoftGel Nasal mask is a bit better.

This mask is extremely quiet. The forehead pad is comfortable and easy to adjust. The mask had several drawbacks for me.The mask was a little to big for smaller faces as the mask encroached upon my lower eyelids. Otherwise the seal was extrodinary no matter how much you moved at night. The second drawback for me was taking the mask off and on at night the release tabs worked well but putting the tabs back in was, in the dark I tended to fumble awhile to reconnect the headgear to mask. Overall a very good mask just would prefer it slighly smaller but will use as a secondary mask to the ComfortGel.

The mirage softgel nasal CPAP mask headgear is very comfortable. I especially like the dial on the forehead on the mask headgear. The dial allows me to tighten the headgear around the forehead without having to tighten the straps which helps to prevent the mask from moving when I turn from one side to side during the night. I also like that the mask lower straps on the headgear clips into the mask frame even though it took me a couple a days to get used to.

I have used the comfortgel nasal CPAP mask for about 4 years and really like this mask. The problem I have with this mask is that the headgear will come loose during the night when I turn over from one side to the other during sleep. The other is that even though Respironics has done a good job enforcing the quick clip supports on the mask frame I have cracked or broken a one of the supports.

IT FIT REALLY WELL, BUT I COULD NOT GET THE FOREHEAD CUSSION AJUSTED SO THAT IT WAS COMFORTABLE. IT BRUISED THE RIDGE OF MY NOSE.

I LIKED THE COMFORT BEST. THE SEAL IS GOOD WHEN THE MASK IS NEW BUT BECOMES LESS SATISFACTORY WITH USE.

  By Challenge participant

Provided and Rated Size: Medium

The seal and cushion worked very well. The mask did not leak, regardless of my sleeping position. The screw mechanism allowed easy and infinite adjustment to the angle of the mask on my face.

The mask is bigger that the Comfortgel and would be a bit more cumbersome to travel with.

The small tabs on head gear straps are harder to attach to the mask than the Comfortgel.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

I like how the headgear is easy to remove from the rest of the mask for cleaning and the large tabs make it easy to attach the mask in the dark.

The Comfortgel pad was softer and seemed to provide a better, more flexible fit.

Has a much better seal on the face. Could not get a totally comfortable fit with the headgear.

Headgear is more comfortable. Seal is fine until you position yourself on your side then seal breaks and you have to readjust the mask.

  By Challenge participant

When I first got the mask I liked the fit of the mask, and felt it was pretty easy to use. However, I was dissapointed by the venting on the system and the attachment mechanisms on the sides of the headgear. The venting system is noisy and sounds like it is leaking. The clips on the side of the mask, while easy to use require you to stretch the straps slightly to properly attach to the mask.

   By Challenge participant

This mask is comfortable and quiet. It is extremely easy to adjust and fits well. Leaking does not appear to be a problem, and it is very quiet. I prefer the clasps on the headgear which attach the mask to those on the Mirage Softgel mask. The venting system is ″designed″ instead of an afterthought, making the mask much quieter when in use.

  By Challenge participant

It was much quieter than other masks that I have used. The fit was great. The one thing that I did not like was that it was difficult to fasten at first. You have to get the clip at just the right angle to make the connection to the mask. I have used the Comfort Gel for over 3 years but the Mirage Soft Gel will be my new mask of choice.

   By Challenge participant

I have used this mask for several years. It is comfortable and easy to fasten. The negative side is that the exhaust port is very noisy. The fastening clips are also prone to breakage.

Actually I found that the Mirage SoftGel sealed well and was still comfortable after having it on 8 hrs every night. I actually like the gel fit so far and want to see how long it lasts before breaking down. It looks like it will definitly outlast the headgear. The Headgear was not as user friendly or confortable as the newer wider banded headgear on the respironics comfortGel mask and will not last long before losing the elasticity. It is comparable to the old thin strap headgear Respironics use to use.

   By Challenge participant

Rated Size: N/A

The newer headgear now being used on the Comfortgel mask is a plus as it stays put on your head and resists moving and stays put and does not stretch out like the old headgear with the narrow straps. It is easy to snap or unsnap the one strap to put on or off, without twisted straps even it the dark.It also lasts longer after washing and does not irritate the sides of your face. Thanks for the opportunity to compare a different product. While I have not looked at pricing yet, each Product has good features to consider for my next purchase.

The things that impressed me most were the stability of the mask after putting it on, it stays put most of the time. Another thing is the ease of use of the ″clip system″ of securing the headgear straps. Although I never did weigh the masks side by side, the Mirage mask felt lighter on my face, maybe due to headgear fit.
The ″screw″ system for forehead pad adjustment seems a little flimsy to me, but works fine for now. I'm a side sleeper and dislodge my mask often, I won't call either mask ″bad″. A VERY individual matter !

The ″boil to fit″ feature seems ″very cool″. The ″comfort gel″ mask seems to be very well made. I had trouble with the forehead pad angle adjustment clips releasing the mask TOO OFTEN. I need to say, I'm a side sleeper and maybe put unfair forces on my mask. I think the ″ball & socket″ buckle is robust and well designed, but I have to wake ALL the way UP to manipulate it. The ″comfort gel″ mask felt heavy and large to me. Again, an individual matter.

The Mirage SoftGel was very comfortable, and very, very quiet. I liked the way the air vented. I had virtually no leaks with the Softgel--it fit my face well. I LOVED being able to adjust the angle from the forehead to the nose to exactly what I needed it to be. I never thought I would say this because I have used the ComfortGel from the beginning, but my next mask will be a SoftGel.

The Softgel was difficult for me to take apart to clean because I have RA and it was hard to make the tabs work. It was also a little difficult at first to snap the headgear to the mask with the clips, but I did get better at that with a little practice.

The piece that swivels where the mask connects to the hose developed an annoying squeak.

I like the ball clasp much better on the ComfortGel. I have always heard that it was a weak spot in the design, but in the time I have used it, I never had a problem with that.

The ComfortGel is easier to take apart for cleaning.

The forehead/nose angle can never be adjusted ″just right,″which some nights leads to leaking around my eyes. The venting of air is also bothersome as it blows on my hands and on my spouse, and it makes a whistling sound that can be annoying.

I liked the one piece gel cushion, and the ease of adjustment on the forehead cushion. I found the sound was quieter than the Comfortgel. The feel of the unit was sturdier, I think the frame will last longer before needing replacement. The hose attachment did not seem to hold the hose very well. The hose pulled off a total of five times on different nights while turning in bed. It feels larger and heavier than the Comfortgel. I like this mask very much and would recommend it As a plus this frame will also accept an Activa cushion, if one would prefer or like to try that.

I like the light weight and comfort of this model. I do find that it is harder to get a good fit/adjustment with this forehead cushion. I can always hear the exhaust port venting. I have had to replace this model four times in two years due to breakage, as they all broke at the lower attachment point for the head gear. However the last mask I received has a redesigned attachment point which looks like it will hold up better. Overall I still like this mask and would recommend it to others.

I really like how sturdy the headgear feels on this mask, and the adjustment mechanism really helps with this. It is going to take some time to see how sturdy this remains.

This mask is very quiet, at least compared to what i am used to from the ComfortGel mask. The way the vents are situated keeps the air from blowing back on your face the way it can with the ComfortGel.

The size on this mask seems slightly smaller than the ComfortGel mask, it's a very slight difference, but just enough to be bothersome if the ComfortGel is a close fit to begin with.

   By Challenge participant

Unfortunately, about the only thing I can say I like better about the ComfortGel mask is the clasps on the headgear. I find them to be slightly easier to remove quickly when necessary.

The vent on the ComfortGel mask has always seemed rather loud to me, and when compared to the Mirage SoftGel it really is. The way it vents out also tends to blow air back on my face, depending on how the hose is oriented, and I find this to be highly annoying at times.

I have had problems with the forehead support several times, from the center release breaking, to the forehead support cracking in the center.

The fit, seal and comfort of the Mirage SoftGel Nasal CPAP Mask were all excellent. It is a little more complicated to clean than the ComfortGel Nasal CPAP Mask but that is insignificant in my opinion. The headgear fits well and I especially like the tab system that connects the head gear to the mask. This system is much more durable than the ball/socket design of the ComfortGel. Overall, I would select the Mirage SoftGel over the ComfortGel.

   By Challenge participant

The ComfortGel mask is acceptable as it relates to fit and seal. It is also a little easier to clean. However, I have been very disappointed with the durability of the ComfortGel masks as it relates to the connection of the headgear to the mask. The socket side on the mask of the ball/socket design consistently breaks rendering the largest part of the mask essentially useless.

The quality of the product impressed me the most. It is well designed to adjust for the wearer in various ways; from the dial for the forehead support and the headgear. The materials used seemed very durable. The headgear fitted well, and the headgear clip was easy to manipulate, even in the dark. I was impressed with how quiet it was!!! At first, I had to get used to how heavy the mask was, but, after a few nights, it was just fine. The air vent was quiet, except when an object (like a pillow or your hand) would obstruct the flow and then it was noisy. Overall, a superior mask with well designed features makes the mask a definite product that I'll be using in the future!!! Thanks for the opportunity to try it!!!

The ComfortGel Nasal CPAP Mask is very comfortable to use. After using it for many months, I was used to quality and durablity of the product. There is no vent, so, the noise level is about average. It is lightweight and easy to clean. Occasionally, the forehead support would disengage from the mask, making the adjustment in the dark very difficult. It is easy to remove the mask with the ball clips, but, you need to get used to it and develop a technique in removing it.

This simply feels and works like it is a better-made mask. Comfortable, soft and good fit and seal. Much quieter. First night required no transition other than being more comfortable.
I did find, however, the inside flap made the inside opening for the nose a bit smaller than was accustomed to. In the end it was no problem.
The head straps are good and don't feel like there is a need to buy a pad for each side.
The forehead extension cannot be detatched from the mask (unlike the Comfortgel) which will impact how to pack and travel with the mask.It has a bigger ″footprint″ in luggage and thus may be more susceptable to breakage.
Simply put and overall this felt like a real step up from the Comfortgel mask, which is still a good mask.

Thank you for the opportunity to test this mask. I am planning on this becoming my mask of choice.

The Comfortgel mask has been my principal mask of choice for a number of years now. The inner-opening, around the nose, does not feel like there is encroachment. It is a durable mask and lighter than the Mirage. It has done great service for a long time.
The headgear/velcro seems to go out first, peeling back over time. The straps were too narrow for a period but now seem to have gone back to a better width.
The tightness and comfort of the seal sometimes disappates early on in use. Othertimes, it lasts a long time.

This is still a good mask, though this test has persuaded me it's time to change to the Mirage.

Good fit with very little leakage right out of the box. Headgear was conveniently assembled. I was quite happy with this mask.

   By Challenge participant

Head gear assembly is a little softer, and I have used this mask for most of the decade. I have always had a larger air leak with this mask, although it is comfortable.

The Mirage mask is very quite, the exhaust porting system was well designed. The headgear straps were very comfortable. The attachment points from the headgear to the bottom of the mask seem very durable. It took a couple of nights to get use to finding the clips and getting them attached but after that it is fine. The adjustments to the forehead pad (screw type) is nice as it offers alot more adjustments angles;instead of the click in a slot type. The seal of the mask is really good as well.

The main issue I had with the mask is the seal thickness. Compared to the ComfortGel mask it is a lot thicker. This thicker seal makes for a good seal in general but I felt the interior of the mask was very crowded; as it was tough to find just the right spot that the mask was not touching/obstructing my nasal passages. This may be a sizing issue but the internal nose pocket was not the same size as the ComfortGel mask. I had the same size mask in both models. The external dimension of the masks were the same but the Mirage uses a thicker seal. I also felt that the seal was alittle stiffer than the ComfortGel and I needed to wear the mask a little tighter than the ComfortGel. This wasn't cause for any discomfort but just an observation. The seal thickness above all effected my comfort with this model.

If it wasn't for the crowded feeling of the Mirage mask, I would have chosen the Mirage as the winner.

The ComfortGel mask is comfortable and has always sealed great for me. The seal itself is soft and molds well to my face. The exhaust noise is slightly louder than the Mirage from my observations but this small difference did not bother me. The head gear is comfortable and the clips are user friendly. I have not had any issues with having to fight with getting the straps clipped in correctly.

The main concern I have had with the ComfortGel is the durability of the clips. I have had several masks that the clips just breakoff. I have recently gotten one of the redesigned masks, in which they have strenghtened the part that the clips attached to the mask. I can only hope that this redesign will lend itself to a longer product life in the field. I rated the durability as average being optomistic that the redesign will fix this problem. Without the hope of the redesign I could not have chosen the ComfortGel as the winner.

Overall, I chose the Comfort Gel as the winner due to the comfort and the way the mask fits for me.

Liked the snap-in headgear attachment, but it seems to stretch out requiring intermittent adjustments. The exit air seems to blow on face and arms, mildly irritating. Form-fitting gel did not seem to add to fit,, but was good idea.

The headgear fit was only slightly better... The forehead pad and mask top was more adjustable than the comfort gel...I liked the push button release of the headgear clips, it made up for the initial fumbling and trying to find where the clips insert...This was a virtually leak free fit....Both masks are of high quality and comfort...This one is more adjustable...

This also was an excellent fit....The forehead pad was more comfortable and left no marks....This came with extra clips in case they break, however, I'm fairly confident they wont. This mak was also virtually leak free. According to my wife , this mask was quieter....

The seal is the best of any mask that I have tried before and I have been using CPAP for 10 years now. It is also the most comfortable mask I have tried because it feels so light on my face and leaves NO strap marks at all; due to the fact that the lower straps barely need to touch the face in order to get a good seal. However, I did not give it a superior comfort rating because it does dig into the bridge of my nose and leaves a red mark. But this happens with all of the masks that I have used. It must just be the build of my face. However, while other masks leak air into my eyes, the Mirage SoftGel does not. So the minor irritation on the bridge of my nose is worth it so as not to have air blowing into my eyes. One other problem is that the mask will slide slightly down my face to the point where the bottom outside of the cushion will touch my bottom lip. This is probably something that I can remedy over time by adjusting the straps and the MicroFit Dial.
I prefer the ball and socket headgear connection of the Respironics ComfortGel mask to the squeeze type snap in connection of the Mirage. I am still having trouble lining up the connector to the mask. Also, the ″snap″ noise of the Mirage connector is quite loud, especially if my wife is asleep when I put on my mask.
Cleaning the mask requires dissembling a lot of parts and then later reassembling all those parts, which I did not like.
All in all though, I would say that this is the best mask that I have ever used. The fact that the mask does not leak, which allows for a better night's sleep, far outweighs the negatives that it may have.
I am also looking forward to trying the Activa LT cushion with this frame, since they are interchangeable; a very nice feature.

This is a good mask, but it is much like other masks that I have used in the past. What makes this mask better than my previous ones, is the ease of cleaning and assembly; just a couple of parts to the mask. Also the ball and socket headgear connection is very easy to line up and snap into place; it pivots 360 degrees, so if the lower straps are twisted, it is very easy to untwist them without disconnecting the headgear.
Respironics has reinforced the above mentioned ball and socket connection. This was a very bad weak point before the fix. I think that just about anyone who has used this mask before the fix has broken this part. Luckily, when mine broke in the middle of the night, I had kept my old mask so I was able to make a quick change out and get back to sleep. I am glad to see that Respironics has listened to its' customers and brought the durability rating way up with this fix.
So, this is a good mask, but to me it just doesn't match up to the Mirage SoftGel.

Our Comments

Is ResMed's First Gel mask a "me too" effort or a leap ahead in mask performance? Pitting the ResMed SoftGel against the very popular Philips Respironics ComfortGel in Product Challenge 12 answered the question. While many users commented on the high quality of both masks, the SoftGel's design was a clear improvement. As one participant said, "I always loved my CG mask- been using one for years, but the Mirage SG will be my new favorite."

Even though the SoftGel won decisively, the participants want further improvements. Many users said the SoftGel was heavier or bulkier than the ComfortGel. However the majority of people who mentioned this still selected the SoftGel over the ComfortGel. Their comments show a mask that seals as well and weighs less is needed. We congratulate ResMed on their win and their attention to detail in the development of this mask. The Mirage SoftGel is not a "me too" mask. It sets a new standard in excellence.

The ComfortGel mask scored the lowest in Durability, earning a  3.6 compared to the SoftGel's 4.2. Many users gave the ComfortGel "Average" to "Poor" ratings. Without being prompted, many users commented on issues they experienced with the ComfortGel frame commonly  breaking at the bottom headgear connection. Many of these users also mentioned knowing of the upgrade to this design, but still expressed skepticism towards the long term durability of this mask. It is clear Philips Respironics has some work to do to rebuild trust in their mask life.
