Auto CPAP stopped working - what next?
Auto CPAP stopped working - what next?
Hi all, it's been a while since I've been around cpaptalk. In the past I've gotten some very good advice here, so let me ask a few questions. Last night my Series M Auto CPAP wouldn’t turn on. It beeps and displays a message advising me that it needs service. I went to my original Series M Plus machine as a backup and struggled with it all night. The Auto machine has been set at 11 to 16 for the past 5 years, and I've used it every night without fail and with great success. The Plus machine was at 14 cm, and that's just too high for me. Kept leaking all night. I plan to dial it back to 11 tonight and try that. (My printouts from the Auto show that I spend most of the night pretty close to 11).
So the questions are: should I even try to get a 5 year old machine repaired? What could I expect that might cost? Would it be reasonable to repair it and continue using it as a primary machine, or am I now on borrowed time waiting for something else to fail. Should I get it repaired and keep it as a backup? Since I have the Plus machine, I can always continue to use that as my backup.
And lastly, what’s the current thinking on which machine is better? I’m looking at the PR System One Remstar 60 Series Auto vs. the S9 Autoset. Price is about the same. Is one considered much better for features and/or reliability? I'd like to do something pretty quickly via cpap.com – they already have my Rx. I really miss my Auto. Thanks for any advice you may have to offer.

Re: Auto CPAP stopped working - what next?
Just about all insce. plans will give you a new machine at 5 yrs, and just about all DME's don't bother to repair machines anyhow, though may replace them if 5 yrs are not up. Speak to your insce. co. re a new machine. I suppose you could ask your DME about repairs, but what's the point if you can get a new new new machine anyhow?
Re: Auto CPAP stopped working - what next?
You might give these guys a call for approximate repair cost estimate.

I suspect it will be more than the machine is worth though.
If it were me I would be checking on getting a new model with latest technology. Do you have insurance or are you self pay?
If self pay and getting through cpap.com call them and get the price for the PR System One 60 series Auto with heated tube humidifier and heated hose option. That would be the model 560. You have to call to get the discounted price...I think it is around $675 total for the whole setup but I can't swear to it.
The S9 Autoset is a great machine and I think they are on sale right now $883 or there about for the machine and humidifier and goodies.
I have had a chance to use both brands....it's a toss up..neither is particularly better than the other.
Respironics came up with the heated hose option to compete with the S9 Climateline optional heated hose...and that pretty much evened the playing field. There are a few other minor pros and cons but none are deal breakers.
I suspect that you would do well with either machine. Since you are already used to using the Respironics algorithm and the ResMed is different...might want to stay with something that your body is used to but then again you might like to try something new.
They are both great machines.

Thanks for the advice Julie and Pugsy. I'm not sure whether insurance will cover it, but I'm ready to pay out of pocket if need be, This is too important. I'll submit afterward and hope it will be covered . it was last time (6 years ago) so I think it will be alright.

Question,
Where can I find these as new at this price?

Until you make a purchase decision, maybe resetting the pressure on your old machine to 11 would make things better in the interim, since your auto was set to a high of 11 anyway.

Re: Auto CPAP stopped working - what next?
Ok, decision made and order placed. I decided on the PR System One REMstar Auto. Definitely worth ordering it via the 800 number vs. internet. The price is considerably less ($647) including the HH and hose.
Now, I'm sure it will come with the limits wide open to 4 or 5 to 20 cm. Is it similar to reset as for the M series? I'd appreciate hearing from anybody who's got info on this. I ordered the unit with next day shipping. that's how desperate I am after a really poor night's sleep. I will be setting the old Series M Plus back to 11 for tonight Kathy. That should be more similar to what I've gotten used to. Can't wait.

Give me just a couple of minutes and I will point you to the manual and software...so look for a private message shortly.
Did you order the 560 to include the heated hose upgrade?
