Eye taping

Post by VikingGnome » Wed Oct 03, 2012 12:29 pm

Ok, my FF mask leaks into my eyes even with Pad-A-Cheek mask liner and antileak strap. I think the problem is my eyes are very close together and the mask is too wide at the bridge. Anesthesiologists always taped patients eyes shut after they are unconscious. That's to keep the eyes closed so they won't dry out during surgery (some people keep eyes open when unconscious).

So I thought maybe taping my eyes shut (not mouth) would keep them from been red and irritatingly dry in the morning. Well, my experiment was short lived. When I dream (REM) I usually open my eyes for a while. The first dream, I woke with a startle and discovered I was "blind". That was very scary until I realized my eyes were taped shut. So eye-taping is NOT the answer.

Unconscious patients under anesthesia supposedly don't dream so not a problem for them.

Taping your eyelids may cause damage to the cornea. Do NOT try this at home!
I have used swim goggles to good effect. (the center is adjustable!)
I used a small hole punch to put a little vent in the outside or upper edge to relieve the vacuum.

Thanks for the good laugh.
Not sure I'd have been brave enough to try it. Knowing me, I'd have clawed my eyes out.
That had to be a horrible feeling for you. Sorry I laughed..sorry I'm still laughing..

I use Tranqileyes from the Dry Eye Shop and find they are perfect for keeping air out of my eyes. Before them my eyes were very sore and very red - had no problems pre CPAP. I too use FFMM, a mask liner and antileak strap.

I often get sandy feeling in my eyes during the night when I get up to pee. Instead of taking the eye lubricant drops given to me by an ophthalmologist, before I go to sleep, I just rinse my fingers with tap water and gently rub each eye, with lid closed. It always works.

After my first month of CPAP, I realized I needed to use a nightly eye lubricant (Tears Again was the cheapest). The mineral oil labricant must not get on the silicone.
I would recommend having periodic eye check-ups for the eye pressure (controversial if CPAP increases) and cornea. On my last exam, the pressure was higher and the beginning of genetic corneal disease was detected.

I just had my eye checked. I've been told the last two visits that I have early cataracts. I've been on CPAP over 12 years but I can't find any evidence that CPAP can cause cataracts (clouding of the lens). The lens is INSIDE the eye so how could air get to it??

Early cataracts may be due to a number of factors; think genetics, nutrition,
exposure to UV sunlight, disease, environmental factors. Even untreated apnea could contribute.
The surgery has made quantum leaps in the last few years.
My mother's extreme myopia was corrected in a matter of minutes as a lovely side effect.

There are some "eye" vitamins such as occuvite and i-caps that may help a little to prevent progression of cataracts.

They don't contain megadoses or anything weird, so they're probably harmless at worst.
