probems with straps
probems with straps
Hi, everyone! At the risk of sounding vain, I am having trouble finding an effective mask/strap that doesn't smash my face. Any suggestions? I didn't even think about this as a problem when I started using my cpap (gladly!) in November but by April I could see the effects -- not good. I changed masks/straps and now do not have the smashing problem but I don't get as good a seal so my sleep is not as restful. Any advice? My RT says they all smash your face regardless of model and/or how you adjust the straps. My work requires me to be in the public eye alot and I do not want to prematurely age. I have no plans to retire nor do I want to have a plastic surgeon on quick dial. I know this is trifling but it troubles me. I would appreciate any suggestions and thank you in advance!

Re: probems with straps
There are strap covers. Our member Padacheek makes them. They are made of polar fleece and feel much nicer then the straps.

What mask are you using now. What masks have you tried.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding strap covers. I checked out the website and will follow up. Do the covers minimize stretching of the skin? The marks are bad ennough but they do go away. I have tried several masks but now am using a ComfortLite2 by Respironics. Tx, again, everyone!

I would also suggest the Sleepweaver élan. I get no marks from it--it is worn loosely like a hovercraft.
If you use nasal pillows, the Swift FX, either with the original headgear or the Bella loops (and Pad-a-Cheek's Bella covers)
Aging results more from the chemical changes in your body due to poor sleep--as opposed to a plastic thingy on your face that helps.
--Just saying!

Re: probems with straps
Tx for the suggestions. I will check out all of the above. I agree with you that not sleeping ages you but a good plastic surgeon can tell what sleep position you favor (face down, on your back, or on your side) and that's before you put one of these masks with the strappy things on! Just imagine afterwards! I wouldn't care much except my profession puts me on the news alot and when people start telling you you look a lot more tired AFTER the CPAP tx than you did before, you do pause and listen. Especially when INSIDE you feel more energetic. Just a little challenge. I will find a way to address it.
Re: probems with straps
One thing to keep in mind is that you may be overtightening the straps, and you shouldn't have to if you have the right mask in your size - you can even create new 'micro' leaks by doing it.
Re: probems with straps
Tx, Julie. Will look at that.
