Anesthesia for cpap user?

Post by mary1898 » Mon Aug 27, 2012 12:18 pm

Hi Everyone:
My husband is the cpap user, not me. He has severe OSA & uses a Resmed S9 Autoset. He's scheduled for a colonoscopy on Thursday. The sedative/anesthesia they will use is Propofol. I spoke with his doctor & he assures me that they're experienced in handling sleep apnea patients. He says they will use caution, low doses & monitor him closely. I've read that Propofal should be used with caution in OSA patients. We will take his cpap just in case. Is there anything else we should be aware of? Has anyone here had a colonoscopy or similar procedure using Propofol? Thanks for your help.

I've had 3 colonoscopies since OSA Dx, and each has been problem-free.

The clinic I go to will not go ahead with my procedure unless I have my CPAP with me (actually on the gurney) AND my hubby knows how to hook it all up should I need it after the procedure.

Haven't needed it so far, but the gastro clinic errs on the side of caution and I'm more than happy about that.

IMHO, the very worst part of this procedure is the prep. Even being diabetic and have eating restrictions is a piece of cake.

Cheers,
xena

Another one here who has had a colonoscopy and endoscopy with the light sedation after starting cpap therapy along with a surgery to repair a broken wrist last year.
No big deal. They see it all the time. You wear a pulse oximeter on your finger for pretty much the entire time and things are watched pretty closely.
I brought my machine "just in case" but it was never even taken out of the travel case. You wake up pretty quick from the sedation and are actually fairly alert when you do.

Had a colonoscopy and endoscopy with the light sedation about 2 months ago , no problems what so ever. They were all aware that I had OSA.

I also had the double procedure last February. I had no problem with the sedation. I believe the doctor said I got propopol. Interesting enough...the doctor said he normally administers the sedation, but his policy is that patients with OSA get a separate anesthesiologist.

I had a colonoscopy last February with light sedation and no problems what-so-ever. As a matter of fact I was alittle dissapointed they wouldn't let me take some (of whatever they gave me) home.

I think part of the light sedation is also Versed which is an amnesiac drug.. Makes us forget unpleasant things...and unfortunately pleasant things...darn it. So we don't really go that deep as we might think and with the Versed we don't remember if we did or didn't.
We always called it the "I don't care what you do to me drug because I won't remember it anyway".
When I had my wrist surgery I had a nerve block for the entire arm and some of the "I don't care what you do to me drug" along with just a little light sedation drug... They said I spent the whole time during the surgery trying to talk the surgeon into letting me mow the yard on a riding lawnmower. I don't remember any of it at all. Nothing past..."okay, here's a little more of the I don't care drug".

My apnea was undiagnosed when I went in for emergency surgery after a motorbike accident shattered my leg. They put in seven pins, a plate and scraped most of the cartilage out of my knee joint. Aside from keeping everyone in my ward awake with my snoring, I didn't have any problems during surgery that I was told about.

I just had a colonoscopy using the same anesthesia as your husband. The hospital requested that I bring my machine. No problems at all. They keep a good eye on you and will not let your oxygen levels get too low.

I had my colonoscopy & EGD last Nov and was told me bring my CPAP machine with me, so I did. The endoscopy center had 2 anesthesiologists, one a Dr and the other a CRNA, and they didn't need my machine because they watched me and the O2 monitor like a hawk, and I was also given O2. I was given Diprivan- yes, Michael Jackson's favorite drug, and no harm came to me, because the staff was aware I have severe sleep apnea, and they were really attentive. Just take the machine w/you, in case they need it, but they very possibly won't need to use it during such a short period of short-acting anesthesia, as long as you or hubby tell them that the patient has obstructive sleep apnea. I also had a total knee replacement in April, and I did have to use my CPAP afterward- they had my hubby set it up for me to use in my room as soon as I got out of recovery. The nurses watched my monitor constantly in the recovery room and I also had O2 then also. Just be sure the staff knows about the OSA, particularly the person in charge of the anesthesia.Good luck, hope he has a good colonoscopy exam and they don't find anything bad up there!

I had gallbladder removal May 2011 and colonoscopy about 8 months ago. Both time were before being DX with sleep apnea obviously and i did well both times.

i had colonoscopy and the anesthesiologist told my wife I probably had OSA and needed a sleep study. She said, "I thought so"

So now I have a APAP machine.

Hokay. I have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and am on oxygen 24 x 7 plus on a bi-level PAP at IPAP 14, EPAP 10. I just has my semi-annual colonoscopy in December 2011. "We" used Propofol (Diprivan) this time and have used it a time or two before. We've never had a bit of a problem w/using this drug for me. The main reason being it is so short acting.

Our risk w/anesthesia/sedation is lower during the procedure when we are closely monitored than during recovery when we are less closely monitored.

For my upcoming surgery, they just told me to bring my mask and they'd take care of the rest, so presumably I'll be hooked up during recovery.
