Auto on / off

Post by ymood » Thu Jul 19, 2012 10:33 am

System one users:
In the setup menu, I put Auto on and Auto off : ON but the air flow does not start or stop automatically when I put the mask or remove it. Is there something else to be adjusted to activate this feature,
Thanks

Sometimes I have to breathe in and out 4 or 5 times before the Auto On kicks in.

I don't use Auto Off.

The auto start/stop cannot be enabled with a full face mask, at least on our machine, it's supposed to be a safety measure but I don't exactly know why.

In the Respironics machines there are 2 different choices in the clinical setup menu for the auto on and auto stop features.

Auto On...this selection pertains to the machine turning itself on automatically when a breath is detected. On means it will turn on and off means you have to push the button to start the machine. If someone has it in the On position and it doesn't want to start automatically then the most likely culprit is shallow breathing. The machine just doesn't sense any breathing. Happens a lot if someone is a shallow breather and also uses a full face mask. Solution...breath more deeply for 3 or 4 breaths and/or place finger over the vent holes of the mask so that the machine can sense things better.

Auto Off....this selection pertains to the machine turning itself off if no breathing is detected for a minute OR is the leak is so large that no breathing can be detected. Set selection to the On position and the machine will turn itself off when it thinks you aren't breathing. Set selection to the Off position and you will have to manually turn the machine off because it will keep blowing no matter how long the mask is off your face.

There is no mask selection setting that affects the Auto on/off sensing thing with the Respironics machines.
With ResMed S8 and older machines if a full face mask was selected then the auto on/off thing in ResMed machines would be disabled but I think now with the S9 machines it doesn't automatically get disabled. Same thing applies to ResMed S9 machines though with the smart start (their auto on/off) being that if the force of the respiration is weak then the machine may not sense the breathing well enough to turn the machine on. Also same thing with full face masks...the volume in the full face mask is greater and takes more force to move enough air for the machine to sense what is going on. This will impact shallow breathers also.
