Talk me into getting back on it

Post by scottjf8 » Thu Apr 12, 2012 2:59 pm

Ive been off my machine since December when I had deviated septum surgery. I'm feeling a bit better but still tired and yawn a lot.

My doc did a study and my AHI was at 0, but he did say my brain is waking me up every 30 seconds due to shallow breathing, most likely UARS. He said to try living with it.

I do alright, but wonder how better I might be. Before the cpap didn't seem to help much. I am thinking of getting a nasal pillow and trying it again. I really don't want to use it every night though, travel with it, etc. I'm a mouth breather but am better since having the surgery, and I could use tape or a head strap to keep my mouth closed.

So go.. Talk me into it

Untreated Apnea often results in a STROKE.
Pick out what brand of adult diapers you want your caregivers to use on you.

Did you read my post? My AHI was 0. No apneas

But you do have:

Bad fractured sleep will cause all sorts of psychological problems. Do you want to be known as "that old grouch"? Do you want to enjoy road rage?

Since you're not sleeping well, going back on CPAP makes sense. My only concern is whether using the nasal pillows is okay so soon after having surgery for a deviated septum.

It's been over 4 months.

Get yourself a recording oximeter and wear it a few nights - if the O2 isnt' at a good level - that would be more than enough to convince me to get back to CPAP.

It's your choice - if you need it, it's up to your good sense to decide - not us.

Cheers,
xena

You are desaturating to 87%. That is not good.

It's been over 4 months.
Did your ENT explain to you that swelling from a devaited septum can take a few months to go away.

After i had my splints out it was great for a week or so, then the swelling kicked in I got easily congested and numbers went through the roof. It took a further 3 months to start to feel better for me.

It may or may not be what you are going through. By the way you don't actually feel the swelling.

You study shows your oxygen falls bellow 90%, only to 87% but who know what happens to that on other nights.

I need to go see him anyway, so it's a good point.. Are you on cpap still?

Did the sleep doc have any suggestions to reduce the arousals? Live with it is rotten advice. Have you tried passion flower or valerian? Maybe with the cpap so you will know if events increase.
I would be happy with the o2 levels you have, averaging 95%, but arousals suck. I had most of mine in REM, so I wasn't getting any REM.

I'm no MD, so perhaps I shouldn't say so, but to my ignorant mind that report doesn't look THAT bad. SPO2 is a little low, but no prolonged excursions below 90% or so. 92% minimums and an 87% during REM sleep isn't horrible. Looking at the time in range stats, 6 seconds (0.1 minute) at below 88% is nothing. Only thing that would scare me, if'n I were you, are the irregularities in pulse rate. That needs to be addressed. Keep after your doc, get a second opinion if you can until you feel comfortable that your diagnosis and treatment are on target.

If I had that kind of report, but with a normal pulse rate throughout the night, I'd shelf my beloved S9 Autoset.

Yes i am on APAP, since my surgery i had another titration and found that my pressure dropped from 7cm to 5cm. But i find 5cm too low so i set my APAP machine from 5.6 to 8.0 and find it uses the pressure of 5.6 for most of the night.
