OT need a pep talk

Post by portiemom » Tue Feb 28, 2012 10:31 am

I am going to see the Neuro. Dr. for a follow up to a workmans comp injury appointment I had 3 weeks ago. I did think the Dr. was easy to talk to and gave me a good exam (?) he wanted me to return in 5 weeks and prescribed topomax, and imetrex, (for headaches after this concussion). After the exam the RN assigned by my employer talked with the DR. and rescheduled the exam for today (3) weeks post app. saying the Dr. forgot he gave me two RX, this happend just after as I was still in the waiting room. I did try to call the Dr. the next two days and he wouldn't return my call.
I have a great deal of trepidation about this Dr. now as he seems to be driven by this RN's agenda, which to me seems obivous to me. I am concerned about letting him continue my treatment, and want to talk with him about this before we go any further, but, I am not too assertive, and even if he does assure me he is acting in my best interest, can I trust him,
Ugh, any thoughts are greatly appreciated

Hi friend, sorry to read your having difficulty with clinic. There is no excuse for a clinic not to contact patient back. My primary has contact me back every time I've called him, even just to ask a question, the past few yrs.

If your doctor forgot prescribing you medications, or doesn't take the time to review your medical record. What else has he forgotten ?

I personally do not know your doctor, only you can make decisions, pertaining to your own health care. If you feel discomfort towards the doctor, then best to seek care from another. Wishing you well.

Thanks Spirit, this is a doctor the workmans comp has assigned me, I just think the RN for the case is there to get me back to work faster than the doctor suggested. I'm working a 4 hour day instead of 6 and 1/2 hour day. They want their monies worth, regardless of how I feel.
I appreciate you taking the time to give me feedback.

Pep, pep, pep... How is that for a Pep talk?

Your best bet is to take a trusted friend and a tape recorder to your visit. Your friend and you need to have a discussion about your specific concerns and your friend can act as an advocate. The tape recorder keeps the doctor and the nurse on track and gives you a record to review as you try to remember what went on during your visit.

Good luck and I hope you heal rapidly.

Edit to add that if your friend happens to be 6' 6" and 220 pounds, the physical appearance may put you on equal footing with the nurse...

I was involved with a workman's comp issue and learned real fast that you need to get your OWN doctor who works for you. I quickly realized I needed a Workers Comp Atty, I had almost already been screwed. When I got to his office, he went into emergency mode and they took very good care of me. Plus I didn't have to deal with my employer who had gotten very nasty once they put me on Workers Comp. When I got my lawyer I was still working and shortly after that was "retired." Sorry, but your empoyer's job is to look out for themselves, not for you. A workers comp atty doesn't take any money up front and only gets a set amoount depending upon what they get for you. Think about this if you aren't going to be able to work for those employers anymore. You can PM me if you'd like.

Thanks, HoseCrusher, chunkyfrog and Macewa, I will be taking all your posts to heart, this is a very stressful situation. I took my hubby to the appointment today, and spoke with the Dr. who tried twice to say that, "perhaps the RN assigned by my employer mis-understood, that he may have told her, "I was Rx sensitive, not that he had forgotten he gave me 2 perscriptions." After the second time my husband said, "That is NOT what she said," the doc was evasive, and so I will give him to the next appointment and then, guess if I'm not better, I will have to get some legal help. I just hate the whole darn hassle.
Thank you for all your support it is really appreciated.
