Time perception and CPAP

Post by Matty332 » Wed Feb 15, 2012 4:34 am

Hello,

This is quite a random question, but I will ask it anyway - it sort of relates to CPAP. It is something that interests me greatly.

People say that as you get older your perception of time speeds up. I think it is true because I distinctively remember as a child watching a clock for ten minutes and it taking AGES! Now 10 minutes goes by quicker when I am older, waiting ten minutes is no biggie for me now.

Of course it is an illusion, time is constant for everyone. But,

When you are chronically tired - did you feel like your perception of time was sped up?

&

After CPAP treatment, and you felt less tired - did you feel you had more time in the day and time 'felt' a bit slower?

- Yes, definitley, I felt less tired
- Yes, I feel I have more time during the day
- but I found that pre-cpap, I would put things off or not do them if I could get away with it. Now, I find I'm not putting things off, and I doing those things that I would not have done pre cpap therapy. So, now I find that time is going by very qickly and often ask myself "where the time went"?

I do believe that the perception of time is related to the "speed" of our internal "clocks". As we grow older we slow down, metabolically and maybe in other ways, such as the speed at which we think, but true time remains constant, and thus we perceive time to go by faster as we slow down. As an example, let's say a child thinks 1000 thoughts per minute. As an adult, let's say that those same thoughts take twice as long, ergo, it takes 2 minutes. To you, you did the same activity but two minutes went by instead of one... time went twice as fast. (odd example, I know, but it works).

I would guess that xPAP influences/enhances our abilities to do things faster / more efficiently, hence after treatment begins time might seem to slow down again.

Someone told me once That life is like a roll of toilet paper, in that the closer to the end the roll gets, the faster it goes. At my age I definitely think that is true cause the weeks just fly by.

Without CPAP I never slept well. It took forever for me to fall asleep and I woke up several times a night that I was aware of and many more times I was not. So nights were always VERY long.

Now, I strap on the mask, snuggle my head in the pillow, and I'm gone. Next thing I know it's morning. Nights are so fast now. THis was really brought home in the past few months. My sleep has been disturbed by a little bit of pain in the hip I sleep on and I think some leak issues with my CPAP. Between the two, I was waking more frequently. And I realized that nights seem longer suddenly again. This past week has been better--sounder, deeper sleep, and nights are lightspeed again.

I feel wonderfully rested, but it's just odd that I barely remember anything besides laying my head on the pillow. Before CPAP, it would take me 20 minutes to a few hours to get to sleep, every time I woke.

I listen to a podcast with a sleep timer when I get in bed. I set it for 15 minutes, but barely remember 5 minutes of it.

Chunkyfrog, your hose rig sound intriguing. Can you describe it for us? Photos are invited here to my pm.

Thanks.

I had a period where my EDS remitted shortly after I had surgery, and I did have the experience of time slowing down. I'd look at the clock and think, "Wow, it's only 11:00am?"

Hey MaxD, just visited your facinating blog. Nice job you're doing. That CMS50E pulse-oximeter you're using sounds like a very good one. Evidently it has a memory card and, alternatively, a user could bluetooth his/her overnight real time data to a computer.

But what I would like to do is input my real time pulse/ox data in real time to my Resmed S9 AutoSet CPAP through the Resmed oximetry connector mounted on the rear panel of the Autoset. I know that will take some doing. I'm hoping that you or others in the Forum might be able to help with advice.

1. Do you have any ideas as to how to accomplish what I want to do (above) so that I can see my oximetry data (and pulse data ? maybe) on a ResScan detailed graph time sync-ed to the existing ResScan detailed graphs? (Their standard "Oximetry kit containing the adaptor cable and a finger pulse ox is priced at about $1,500 and isn't easy to acquire. Insurance coverage is problematic.)

2. Does anybody have any ideas as to how I might find the necessary mating (male) connector or the standard Resmed "S9 Oximetry Adaptor" cable at a down to earth price? Anyone have such a cable he'd like to find a new home for, please let me know via pm.

3. Want to tell us a little about the Zeo unit like how is it rigged to you, price, etc. and what use you might make of the brain wave data?
