Alligator clip cable for camping?

Post by Dive Apnea » Wed Feb 08, 2012 9:24 am

I have a PR Remstar Pro C+ flex CPAP.

I have used the search function but can't seem to find an answer.

Is there a manufacterer that makes a cable that goes from the back of my machine and has alligator clips to a deep cycle marine battery?

I found these on cpap.com, but you have to buy each set to conect to each other. I guess that is not a big deal, but curious if anyone for just one cable.

You could cut off the mail power outlet end of one cable and the female power outlet end of the other cable. Then wire them together. That's one way. But no, I am not aware of any single cable that goes alligator clip to DC connector end.

Also, note, you really DO want the fuse connection on the alligator clips. So, don't just cut off the male power outlet end of the cable and put alligator clips onto that end. That fuse protects against short circuits.

That's what I do. Though it seems as if there should be some other connector that would allow you to have a terminal that was either a male power outlet or the alligator clips, I assume they think it's easy enough to just plug them together. That makes only two cables that must be made, not three.

There is no engineering reason for not making one cable that goes to the back of your machine to alligator clips for a battery. I Figured they just wanted to make you buy both attachments. $$$$

If you have both types hanging out at once, you have the risk of arcin and sparkin with the unused connector.

You really need to be careful with the alligator clips because it's so easy to get the polarity wrong and then CPAP machine go BOOM! Especially at night, woken up by the power going off, groggy, etc.

You can have a plug in the middle with exchangeable ends, but then you have another part to lose. Premade parts listed below.

Warning: Check polarity on the following. It's probably wired tip positive for the following parts, which is what Respironics wants, but it doesn't actually say in the description. For that matter, verify the polarity even if it DOES specify it in the description.

This combination makes an alligator to Respironics DC plug set with a fuse.

Verify the polarity before plugging it into your CPAP. If the polarity is wrong, you can probably finesse the Powerpole connectors out of the housing and reverse the polarity.

This part below would give you a cig plug option, but put in a smaller fuse first.

Powerwerx is a good company. Anderson Powerpoles are really good connectors.

That power plug fits S8 machines as well, but the polarity is reversed from Respironics.

Did I say to verify the polarity on the DC connector before plugging it into your CPAP machine?

Then you wouldn't be able to plug into a cigarette lighter plug. Which is more common? If you make the coaxial DC to cig plug, it's easy to make an adapter to go from cig to alligators. If you made a coaxial to alligator, there's no good way to go from the alligator to a cig plug, due to exposed contacts.

You could make separate coaxial to cig and coaxial to alligator cables, though.

Thanks for the info Archangle!

I guess, I was just going to use mine for camping in a tent, (not car) so I really wouldn't need a cig lighter adapter. However, I wonder if that cig buddy can be used a tender with the alligator clips to the Marine battery I would be using.

The problem with doing that is that the battery might draw enough current to blow a fuse. It might work if the battery is nearly charged, but if it's somewhat discharged, it might draw too much current.
