First Night....Sore throat.
First Night....Sore throat.
I got all of the new equipment yesterday around 5 pm. Went and got my distilled water with cpap dreams racing through my head. I got myself all set up and headgear adjusted, Jumped in bed an did pretty good.....for about an hour. I kept leaking. I got up and changed from the petite mask to the small mask and went back to sleep in minutes. At 12:00 I woke again with avery sore and dry throat and mouth. I was not breathing through my mouth and double checked the humidifier. Not sure what is going on. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this something I need to just deal with until I get used to sleeping this way?

I would say that you are mouth breathing .. the same things happens to me if I don't use a mouthpiece w/chinstrap.idahogal wrote:I got all of the new equipment yesterday around 5 pm. There are plenty of things to try .. taping is an option. Of course there is the FF mask.
You don't mention what equipment it is that you have. You might want to add it to your profile so it lists at the bottom of your posts as mine does.
Is the humidifier a heated humidifier? Which model? And if it is heated, what setting did you have it at?
My first night I had it too high and got rainout. The second night I had it set too low and got a sore throat. The 3rd night it was OK, but it wasn't until I got a heated hose that I was able to get enough humidifcation to be really comfortable.

I would agree with jcarn that you are mouth breathing. Now you may not normally be a mouth breather, however, you need to remember that with this air being forced in it may be enough to "pop" your mouth open some. I had the exact same experience. I did try a chin strap, but found I was able to get more used to the pressure so I didn't open my mouth at night. Keeping my tongue tight against my teeth helped.
You may want to try a chinstrap or even taping your mouth for awhile.

It's probably the mouth breathing as the other said. But another thought is, did you remember to turn the humidifier back on when you changed mask sizes? Also, what is your humidifier set at?

I agree that mouth breathing can be a significant cause for a dry mouth and throat to some extent but Bill brought up some good points that need to be considered about the humidifier. And Linda, good catch. you may be right on target.
Idahogal, Bill also mentioned about getting a heated hose. Without it you are more apt to get condensation and a situation that is called "rainout". You'll know what that is when you get it The higher the setting for the heated humidifier, the greater possibility of rainout. But you need a higher setting to get enough moisture to your throat.
Good luck and I hope you have a better night.
