Nasal Irritation Info

Post by snoozalot » Fri Feb 10, 2006 1:47 pm

I just ordered my rig from Cpap.com. I had some questions, so I called and talked to one of their people, I think it was Maria.

Anyway, I ordered the Aura, and being a first time user of Cpap, i was concerned about nasal irritation with the pillows. She told me to NOT use KY, as some here have posted, but to use a product called "AYR". It's a saline jelly, and can be purchased at any major pharmacy. She said that it really works to keep the irritation down by not allowing the nasal passages to dry out, like KY can allow, as KY is a lubricant, and AYR is a moisturizer.

So, I think I'll give it a try.

The WOOooosH of Aura

Post by slumberer » Fri Feb 10, 2006 2:44 pm

I have been using an Ultra Mirage FF and wanted to give a nasal pillow system a try. I bought the Aura and find it is great...with one exception: It is LOUD! This is not the air escaping from the pillows or the venting air...it seems the air bending in the tube just before reaching the pillows is where the noise is made on exhalation. The inhalation is silent. Perhaps it is the exhaust port, but the sound seems to come lower, closer to the pillows.

At any rate, anyone with a similar experience? It was difficult for me to get used to the first night; however, when I can spare not to get a good night's sleep, I'll give it a try again. For now, its back to my Ultra Mirage.

Any comments?

P.S. I should be receiving a comfort curve on Saturday in my never-ending pursuit, it seems, for a nasal interface I can use in combination with my FF.

Check the nose pillows you receive with the Aura. You should receive two packages, one medium and one large. I received these two packages but when I actually looked at the pillows, they were both large. There is a small mark "L" on the collar of the pillow that connects to the headgear.

I used the large and it was OK but made my nose sore. I called and they are sending a medium.

Jim

ps: I didn't notice the Aura being all that loud.

AYR is the first and best choice, but many people (myself included) have found KY to be a workable alternative.

I used KY out of necessity my first night, and to be safe on the second night, and have never used it since.

My wife was disappointed though; she got all excited when I pulled out the tube of KY until she saw that I was only using it up my nose!

The Ayr is good stuff, and can be purchased at WalMart, etc. My local Walmart had to order mine because we are so rural - but it wasn't a problem. However, I never needed to use it. Weird because I was using the NasalAire "prongs", and really had to stuff them up into my nostrils. Actually, maybe that's why I didn't get chapped - those suckers couldn't move if they wanted to ... I gave my Ayr to my sister-in-law who uses oxygen - it works for her.

Slumberer, it sounds to me like your Aura nosepiece is "too bent". If those wires get too out of shape, they restrict the airflow somewhat. I would almost bet that's what's happening. In trying to fit mine, I got the airflow restricted - and did get a gushing noise. Or maybe your particular unit got screwed up in manufacturing. Contact your provider and see if you can get a different set of pillows. I wish you good luck.

Linda

I used KY as a kind of buffer between the pillows and my sore nose - AYR is unobtainable where I live. The KY was excellent.

Folks, as long as you're not using oxygen, Vaseline works perfectly.

It's cheap, readily available, stays moist (unlike KY), and assists in providing a great seal for the nasal pillows.

I've been using it for over two years, and there is absolutely NO deterioration in my nasal pillows.

I was at the local Walgreens and compared AYR with "Simply Saline" nasal gel. Both are saline based with Aloe, "Simply Saline" gives you twice as much in the tube for less money.

Works great with nasal pillows.

Your experience is exactly opposite mine! I hear practically no noise on exhalation but a whoosh on inhalation. Are you sure you remember it correctly? I have the Swift, Aura, and Breeze and they all make some noise on inhalation but very little on exhalation.

I use KY jelly because it provide a "stickier" seal for me. I do like the smell of Ayr though. I will be trying Vaseline. Thanks for the tip!

Jerry, you are right. I got it backwards. Noise on inhalation not exhalation.

Sorry.....Bye the way, my Comfort Curve went okay last night except for the leaking that occured when I turned my head to sleep on my side. If I can manage to fix that, I think I will use this nasal interface when my nose is free of congestion.
