Cleaning EncorePro Smartcard

Post by Hugh » Wed Jan 25, 2006 1:16 pm

This morning EncorePro could not read my Smartcard. After several removal/re-insertions of the card there was no joy.

Previously I had cleaned the gold contacts on the card with an art gum eraser, but several days ago I had purchased some electronic contact cleaner for my growing collection of LED flashlights and I decided to use it. Eureka! EncorePro can now read the card.

The contact cleaner is ProGold Connector Enhancer from Caig Laboratories. It is available in electronic supply stores and Radio Shack. I used a pencil-like applicator, Part no. 6100P, but it is available in several different forms, including spray cans.

The blurb on the applicator reads, "Improves the flow of electricity on metal surfaces & prevents atmospheric contamination from silently attacking electrical connections. USE ON: Gold, Silver, rhodium, copper & nickel metal connectors and contacts; edge connectors. plugs & sockets, audio/video/computer connections and all industrial equipment, etc."

N.B. I am not associated in any way with Caig or Radio Shack.

Yes, you can buy additional cards. I just ordered some from http://www.cpapXchange.com. They may be available from other vendors on the Internet. A quick search on Google would find them.

A quick search on google will also tell you that the ProGold Connector Enhancer Pen is more expensive than a new card.
