can you use cpap.com for dme?

Post by pbsd » Fri Jan 14, 2011 11:33 am

I just ordered something from cpap.com and noticed that they take insurance. From the good posts on this site about them I am wondering if I could just use them as my DME.

If you could figure out a way to get CPAP.com to generate a billing form to turn into your insurance you would be set. Most insurances pay their fee for a billable code. For instance, If you have Medicare and want to buy a Quattro from CPAP.com, you will pay 176.00 for the mask, headgear and cushion in a package. Medicare will reimburse you for each piece.
The mask is code A7030 and reimburses for 170.55
The headgear is code A7035 and reimburses for 32.63
The cushion is code A7031 and reimburses for 63.08
The total reimbursement for those items is 266.26. Even if you do not have a supplement your 80% is 213.01.
If you could get CPAP.com to send you a billing form (1500 form) you could turn those items in and make a profit every time you get a mask if you purchased it online. All CPAP.com would have to do is put down on the form that it is a nonassigned claim meaning that the customer paid up front and the reimbursement would go back to the customer.

After thinking about it, CPAP.com would have to put the exact amounts that they billed to you so you would not make a profit, but you could at least break even and use them to bill your insurance. If they put the reimbursement amount on the form and charged you less, they would be committing fraud.
May be worth looking into???

Even though cpap.com doesn't bill insurance for you, I think they do put the codes on the invoice. Not sure.

Wulfman (Den) wrote several posts about how his insurance would reimburse him for his out-of-pocket purchases from cpap.com

Might check with your insurance to see if they do what his allowed him to do:

That's what my insurance provider did for me. I purchased all of my own equipment and then submitted an invoice (from me) to my insurance provider and they reimbursed me for 80% of it.

Will they reimburse YOU if you purchase your equipment online and then submit an invoice from YOU to THEM for reimbursement?
(you would have to make out an invoice making yourself as the billing party.....to them as the party being billed)
This way is less expensive for both of you. Many insurance providers consider their group members as "in-network" and will reimburse them for out-of-pocket purchases (at various percentages).

Many people have reported that BCBS is pretty flexible about reimbursing their group members for out-of-pocket purchases.
