Heart Problems and Sleep Apnea

Post by LSAT » Mon Jan 10, 2011 8:15 am

An article in our local paper talked about a TV Anchor that was retiring because of heart problems. The article stated....

It wasn't diet, heredity or overwork that caused his heart problems said G------, but sleep apnea,
"a rather severe case of it. At least that is what my cardiologist tells me."

The article did not say whether the sleep apnea was being treated.

Shame that the article didn't mention whether his apnea is being treated, and for how long he'd been treating it if it is being treated.

Yes, a wonderful opportunity to educate the public was missed here. However, they at least mentioned it, which is a step in the right direction.

My pharmacist told me that her husband had sleep apnea and used a machine. He later passed away from what was determined to be heart problems that were caused by his apnea before he started treatment. He was also a doctor. This she told me when I first started treatment almost 3 yrs ago. She said her husband was a case of too little too late. I never sleep without my machine!

I'm one of those with heart disease and and sleep apnea. I don't know which came first, but regardless, I do know that the heart disease will probably take me sooner or later, whether I use my apap or not. I just know that I cannot get a good nites sleep without it. I went for several years waking up choking and gasping before I got a sleep study and by that time I had already had 4 bypasses and several stints. Since I have been on cpap, I have had eight stints and still have severe apnea when I don't use my machine. My heart disease was allegedly cause by genetics, but I suspect it was caused by stress in the job. I just think I burned the candle at both ends and now will pay for it. The machine makes me comfortable and for that I'm thankful.

I am so sorry to hear that. Since this therapy is not really that old and it's taken awhile for doctors to order sleep studies and patients to ask for sleep studies. I can't imagine how many suffers have had other problems attributed to other things when in fact it could have been the apnea itself as the culprit.
