CPAP the Lighter Side...

Post by DocileDiva » Mon Nov 29, 2010 12:34 pm

I have been on my cpap for about two weeks. This forum has been wonderful. I send everyone I meet who is on a CPAP, even my respitory therapist, to this site. Okay now for my cute story...

My mom came to visit me the weekend before Thanksgiving...She wanted to help me out since I had wrist surgery, but she also wanted to observe me sleeping on my new machine. Well she is an early riser, she said woke to this strange noise coming from my room....bllllppprrrr....blllppprrr...or something like that (mask leak of course). She came and peeked in and she said my chihauhua Angel was standing over me staring at me as curious as she was (I thought she meant bascially just looking at me cause she sleeps with me sometimes). I adjusted the mask in my sleep and continued...to sleep (with no snoring). Well, yesterday morning same thing happened except this time I woke up completely while adjusting my mask....what do I see staring me eye to eye.... My chihuahua Angel watching over me....until I adjusted the mask it quieted down and she walked back to the other side of the bed and went back to sleep...it was really cute...

SN: Angel never bothers me in my sleep....she won't even get out of her bed if I wake up really early in the morning she loves her sleep. ....before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea...a few times she would wake me up by licking me on my forehead at like 2 a.m. and I would wake up gasping for air....and a terrible headache. I imagine these were some of longer apneas where she felt or heard me stop breathing. She is truly my "Angel".

What a cute story!
It's not the first time I've seen the same thing on these forums. You obviously have an angel who loves you and wants you around

Cheers,
xena

As I was getting ready to go to sleep our dog, Ginger, jumped in to our bed the first time I wore a mask. It was a nasal mask and when she looked at me her eyes all but popped out. She stared at me for a minute or two with surprised expression. My wife started to laugh and so did I. We still laugh about it whenever one of us brings it up.

Gotta love those 4-legged family members!

What did your mom say about the whole thing?

I do love to hear about someone who is curious about sleep apnea treatment. Sounds like your mom is a person who likes to learn new stuff:

Mom wanted to make sure I was still breathing... but she says it seems to help me sleep better....and she is very happy with the way I wake up refreshed in the morning. She lives about 45 minutes away from me and we talk several times a day by phone most days. She want me to do whatever it takes to get healthy. My dad who snores and gasps for air sometimes when sleeping keeps asking me can he come sleep on my machine for one night to try it out .....I told him he should go have a sleep study done...my pressure is high and it might be too strong for him, then I told him about the guy on the forum who said he tried a leaf blower....

My beloved little granddaughter lives with us (she's 3) and sometimes comes down to my room to awaken me in the morning so we can play. Unfortunately, I neglected to tell her about the CPAP machine and my full face mask. So after about three days on the machine I awoke to my tiny granddaughter smacking the daylights out of my mask with a ruler and screaming, "You let go of my grandpa! Let go! Let go!"

I'm waiting for the post about the dog that likes to stick his nose into the wind coming from the mask relief valve (like those that love to stick their head out of the car window!).

My dad is disabled and has a caregiver living with him since my mom passed away almost a year ago. Every two weeks, his caregiver has a weekend off and I stay the weekend and take care of my dad. Almost immediately, my dad started talking about my snoring and how bad it sounded. I would wake up during the night and notice the cat laying on the dresser next to the bed and looking down at me.

My dad was quite relieved to hear I was getting a sleep test and then that I would be using a CPAP machine. Since I began the therapy in August, he now informs me that I don't snore any more. AND the cat sleeps on the bed with me.

Well, actually, I have a cat that does that an hour before my wakeup time. So subtract one hour of sleep...
Well, it's not that I ever get more than a couple continuous hours of sleep during the night anyway..

I do realize that If I ever hope to feel better, then I need to take these basic steps, like keeping the kittens out of the bedroom while I sleep.

Yep, but I bet yo're employee doesn't love them when they do that! Just what sleep-deprived people need, a pet to disturb their sleep!

I know, I'm in the same predicament....

My cat was nonplussed about it all (he's the one who's eyes were lit by my phone's flash on my avatar, if anyone's wondering). Jumped on the bed, slept at my feet as usual. The only change I've noticed is often he'll wander up, so he's deliberately in the path of the vented air, lie there for five to ten minutes, and then casually wander back to nestle at the foot of the bed. I read somewhere that cats like to have the scent of the people they like?

Well, I started doing it - before I go to sleep I shut off the doors to the bedroom and bathroom (they're connected). It helps me to get a little more sleep,
and avoid getting paranoid about cat-germs when the girl decides to lick the mask vent.

I hate to do that, but I do have two kittens, well cats now, so at least they can keep each other company, and I think at the moment that as much as I like my cats snuggling up with me in the morning, at the moment my work productivity is more important. After all, the kitties won't have cat food if I'm out of a job.

And on the weekends if I wake up early I take off my mask, open the doors, and sort of half snooze for an hour or so while I get cat-paw massages.
