Nasal Interface: Any Good? / Best One?

My wife REALLY needs advice in this.

She is having alot of problems with her "Ultra Mirage" mask. It causes great irritation where it contacs her face. She won't even even wear it now because of the pain.

Is this one any good?

Also, is there a carbon dioxide inhalation problem with any of these nasal interface devices?

Hello,

The ultra Mirage really is a good mask for many .. The key to comfort is not getting the straps too tight. It just needs to rest on the face . The air pressure will expand the seal . That said perhaps she is allergic to the mask material...Or it is reacting with some face cream....If that is the case you might try the Breeze. Problem with masks is there are so many to choose from and many are junk..Can get quite expensive searching for the right mask..Wish I could give you a straight answer . Perhaps you could do a search of the masks you are considering.

If it was provided by a DME insist that they give her something that she is comfortable with.. Thats what they are getting paid for...

bigZ, given the kinds of interfaces you are looking at, I think your wife would like one of these much better:

Puritan Bennett's Breeze with nasal pillows. (My personal favorite.)
Order it with two sizes of nasal pillows for her - medium & large...yes, "large" even if she has tiny nostrils. Pillows that are slightly "too big" seal better and are much, much more comfortable because they sit more outside the nostrils. Make sure it's the "improved" Breeze - comes in a light purple box, not a blue box.
Great for people who sleep on their sides a lot. ("ok" for back sleepers)

or

ResMed's Swift with nasal pillows.
Comes with all three sizes of pillows.
Great for people who sleep on their backs.
("ok" for side sleepers)

For either interface, rig up a hanger or hook of some kind on the headboard or the wall at head of bed, to keep the main hose up out of the way - hanging above the person's head. Like a fish on end of a slack line.

Use microcore made by 3M on the part of the body that is irritated. When I take off the piece of micrcore, I stick it on my mirror so it is where I can find it if I need to use it again.

I use the simplicity.

Yes, I do have a small amount of iritation on my skin when I remove the mask, but it clears up within a 1/2 hour of getting up. I look at it this way. It helps me sleep through the night. With a small cost in the morning of irritation..... Not much of an expense for me to stop.

I did try lots of masks until I found this one, something I don't want to repeat. I tried the air pillow thingy's but I found it just too annoying where the exhaust came out over my lip.

I'll stick with my simplicity.

Tell your wife to weigh the benefits against the problems. Is it really worth giving up?

I use Nomask (CPAPPro) and have no problems with it. In fact I like it better than any other mask I have used. It doesn't rest on the head so I don't get any sores on my head nor do I get that uncomfortable feeling during the night. The hose swivels so I can sleep on my side as well. I don’t have any problems with the mouth piece coming out since it’s a boil and bite it forms to the teeth.
