Hypoglycemia is often due to insulin resistance--your body makes insulin but you don't metabolise it properly. You have too much insulin. When you eat things high on the glycemic index your blood sugar will rise rapidly and then fall precipitously, making you feel terrible. This is a pre-diabetic condition, it can progress to diabetes when your body eventually stops making enough insulin.

And yes, this is highly related to sleep apnea, because the inflammatory processes in your body and the interrupted sleep are implicated in causing insulin resistance. There's a complicated hormonal explanation for this--I'll leave it for someone else to tackle.

Getting sufficient exercise and reducing the glycemic load by eating whole grains, vegetables, and lean protiens and avoiding high glycemic processed foods will help, as will treating the apnea and getting better quality sleep.

You are on the right path. Make sure you are eating enough--I know that seems counterintuitive, but it's also important in maintaining a normal blood sugar.

Sugar free products with artificial sweeteners can still mess with your blood sugar, so be aware that so-called light or low calorie foods may not be the best choices. Better to eat whole foods (whole grains, real fruits and vegies, fats, and dairy products) rather than diet sodas, artificially sweetened products (i.e low fat yogurts, puddings, etc.).

How's the CPAP working for you?

I have been a hypoglycemic for 36 years and control it by a strict diet. No sugars period.
Only every day normal food. Artifical sugars sent me into hypoglcemc symptoms the same sugar.
I had a very good dietitain. That had me keep track of what I ate for the first month. Of course he
discouraged the use of sugar or ingredients ending in * ose ". these are man made sugars.
Explained his reason for just 3 meals a day would control my sugar level better than snacks which
causes my insulin to spike making the pancreas work more often. He took me off of caffeine also.
I love the 3 meals I am in control not my symptoms, not the need of food to tame the them.
I now have Apena and it doesn't affect my hypoglycaemia at all . Eating sugar and my eating habits do tho..
Eating to many Carbs.
There is lots to learn about this diet reading labels is one , listening to your body when yoy eat foods
that affect you. watching your diet for to many starches , carbs not enough protien to balance that out.
It does get better in time, the tired feeling leaves along with all the other symptoms you are experiencing.
Just my input from experience. Ya, I can sneak a little sugar in now but not often.

TRADE YOU! I'm up to 200 units of insulin daily, and can't get low enough. I could fix hypoglycemia, with food intake, It's getting so the insulin dose won't fit in the syringe almost. Jim

Hummer3D, I've had hypoglycmia for years. What works best for me is eating LOTS of protein, especially early in the day. Sausage & eggs for breakfast, lean meat and green salad (no dressing) for lunch. It's also helpful to learn to recognize the symptoms of a blood sugar drop coming on, and have something handy to take care of that; peanut butter crackers and juice can work for this. Start keeping track of everything you eat and when the blood sugar problems happen so you'll know what's working and what isn't.

Since starting cpap my hypoglycemia has improved quite a bit. Good luck, and let us know what's happening!

TRADE YOU TOO! I'm up to 120 units of Novolog and 90 units Levemir daily and still going over 250. It is getting better though. I was at 4-500 bg, so I am doing better. I do drop during the night though and I keep about 5 grapes on my table to munch. Fruits spike me horribly so they raise me really fast.

Not that I'm glad you take a little more than I do, I just wondered what the record was for the still living.... The doctor didn't seem scared that I was taking so much. I only check my sugar before breakfast 60 units and before dinner (My Supper) 80 units, and snack at bed 60 units. I don't test after a meal as I'm sure it would be scary.

If I feel I'm in trouble, I test, usually if I get too low I can feel it and see it. I get weak, clammy, and my vision gets a large yellow dot in front of what I see, then I panic and over load on sugar. Jim

I am in the adjustment phase of the insulin right now. I have to check 4 times a day. Before I was put on the Novolog my family doctor had me at 171 units of the Levemir. It just wasn't doing anything. My endo flipped and changed me to the Novolog to get the numbers down quicker. Sometimes it does it freaky on me and plummets too quickly, usually at night. I get the vision problems too. Mine is like looking through a rippling glass of water. I have a friend that is just shy of 300 units.
