S9 versus PR System One?
S9 versus PR System One?
I'm considering an APAP upgrade and am researching the S9 versus the PR System One. Has anyone tried out both?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: S9 versus PR System One?
yes, I have had both.
I had the systom one auto for a month, it was my first machine after an at home titration with another auto.
It was a lovely machine.. however, I have RAD reactive airway disease, and I am a very shallow breather.
Also I have hyper sensitive hearing.. so I had to return the systom one for the following reasons..
one: since I am a shallow breather, I take a long time to finish an exhale, and pause before I inhale..
That machine has a preemtive feature called a pressure pulse, which blows a puff of air at you if you dont
take a breath in thirteen seconds.. It checks to see if you have an obstruction.. This kept me from ever getting
any good sleep.. It doesnt bother anyone else, unless they too are shallow breathers..
two: I could hear a very faint high tone coming from the machine, it was very, very high, and I have sensitive hearing, so
that was driving me nuts.. Again, that wont bother most people
Three: I have RAD, since I knew the pressure pulse was not a function I could shut off, I tried to speed up my exhales,
but this would just make me cough.. so this was not the machine for me..
Other cons: on the display screen, YOU can barely read it, and it only give weekly averages.. however, you can download data, a pain
if you dont have time. Weekly averages are useless to have on that screen, just a really stupid feature... When they designed the s nine,
the did not make that dumb move..
Pro: excellent, very, very good filtration system.. easy to clean humidifier too.. however it does not hcome with a special heated hose which
stops condensation, and the s nine does. Humidfier works well on lower numbers too..
******************************************************
I traded in my systom auto Aflex for the s nine..
Pros.. super quiet, has slimline hose, and climate line tubing available.. has easy to read screen with daily ahi, leak, and hours logged..
SD card in back easily pulls out and info downloads in your computer in three minutes, breath by breath therapy info.. its fabulous!
Filtrations system ok, but S one is better, it has two filters, where as s nine only has one.
After having both machines, I can say I would not trade my s nine. However, I wish the s nine had the system one filtration system..
the s nine comes with a humidifier chamber that is not meant to open to clean, you rinse it out thru the hole in the top.. that was stupid, but you can buy another chamber if you want for the machine which does open easily.. Also you need to crank up the humidity to three on the s nine to get some
satifaction, but thats not a big deal..
Also the s nine has a mask fitting feature which is great, press the button, it goes to full pressure while you fiddle with your mask, very cool.
I WOULD GET THE S NINE AUTO.. .. and I would get the slim line
tubing for the summer, and buy the climate line tubing for the winter. I cant imagine that you would not like this machine.
Hope that helps!

Re: S9 versus PR System One?
Hi,
I have both machines.
I use the PR System one for my travel machine and the S9 for home. My pulmonologist is not happy that I use the S9 cause I get to download the info., but I only see her every 6 months. ( She only has the equipment to download the System one)
Elena (as usual) did an excellent job of describing differences between the two machines. I would agree that the System one is noisier (still pretty quiet), and creates more noise in the hose when you are breathing. A hose cover might dampen the sound.
I never heard the high pitch whine that she described but my hearing is not as sensitive as hers. I agree that the 7 day screen on the system one is pretty worthless, and with no backlight I needed to turn on the lamp even during the daytime to see the screen. I have yet to spring for the software since it's 100 dollars.
I do think the humidifier box on the system one is easier to clean since it comes apart, but I empty out the water on the S9 and allow the machine to dry it out with the cool down feature which has worked well so far.
Hope that helps and let us know what you decide.
Shar:)

Re: S9 versus PR System One?
I went from the Resperonics M series to the Resmed S9 auto. I have no experience with the System one. That being said I love the S9. First off I initially had to check if the machine is running. I like that it does not send the full pressure all at once when it starts I kind of builds to the prescribed pressure. I use the climate line tubing and have very little if any rainout. As for the humidifier it is easy enough to clean and they do offer a dishwasher safe model that can be separated. I also like the cool down feature I think it keeps moisture out of the tubing and dries it. It may seem kind of trivial but I like the bag it comes in I stick my computer in it and travel very well with it. Also I thought very important to track my data and that is easily accomplished with the S9. For reference my machine is set fir pressure of 14 to 20 and I use the Resmed FX nasal pillow mask. As for cost I would not be able to comment I got my through insurance but online the S9 seems to be a little more expensive. The only drawback I see as of right now they do not offer a BI-Pap machine. It is on its way.
Good luck with you research

Re: S9 versus PR System One?
I used the PR System One for two weeks as a loaner until I got my s9. The only thing I didn't like about the System One was the one week average on the data and the screen is very hard to read.. I don't think the people at Philips Respironics understands how much business they will lose just because of those two features.
Re: S9 versus PR System One?
I agree totally.. From what I read, they used to have machines with bright azure blue lights that could wake the dead, so they went in theThe only thing I didn't like about the System One was the one week average on the data and the screen is very hard to read.. opposite direction... what a screw up.. You really do need a flash light to read the screen, and the numbers are what? an eight font? OMG..
dumb! Even if you turn on a light they are impossible to read. and who gives a crap about a weekly average.. why did they even bother?
Had they ONLY put a nightly average on the machine, crummy screen or not, that would have really put them up there with the s nine..
I hope they leaned something from this, and the next machine they make you can read the screen and see your daily ahi numbers.
I wish I would have been in the room when they thought of that weekly ahi idea.. I would have beaten them with a stick!
Thats like giving a blood tester to a diabetic that gives weekly averages.. OH, sorry you just have to GUESS what your days are doing....
idiots..

Re: S9 versus PR System One?
I only have the PR System One and have not tried the S9. However, I think it useful to correct the above comment about the PR System One made by elena88.elena88 wrote: Pro: excellent, very, very good filtration system.. easy to clean humidifier too.. however it does not hcome with a special heated hose which

Resmed and Philips-Respironics take different approaches to control of rain out. Resmed uses their Climateline Hose, which heats the air that passes through it. My understanding is that the Climateline Hose is an extra cost option for the S9; it does not automatically come with the S9.
P-R uses "Humidity Control Technology" which adjusts the output of the humidifier according to room temperature and patient airflow. The System One humidifier includes this feature at no extra cost. My experience with this system is that it works well, and its much easier to find a comfortable humidifier setting than when using a Ozzy Hose (which I've also used). My understanding is that the Ozzy Hose is similar to the Resmed Climate Line hose.

Re: S9 versus PR System One?
Might depend on who is paying, and how much.
The System One is a very nice machine. If I remember correctlly, net cost is about 60% of the System 9. So if you are paying 100% out of pocket ....
The System 9 sounds a little better designed in some ways. Have not tried that machine. They are both much better in some ways than anything we have had in the past - in detection of central events, for example.
Some compliants too of course, and some prefer older machines for certain reasons. But I think being able to detect centrals (though not treat them, at least on the CPAPs/BiPaps) allows them to offer much improved algorithms.

Good luck!

Re: S9 versus PR System One?
the 'dry box technology" on the PR one does not control humidity. It's called dry-box so that the water from the chamber does not leak back into the unit if you forge to empty it. (A huge disaster with the M series). However, if you have the PR one unit on the table.....shake it side to side, then turn the unit on you'll have a shot of water going into the tubing.

Thanks for the correction. According to cpap.com's web site, the correct name for P-R's technology to control rain-out appears to be "System One Humidity Control Technology"
From cpap.com's web page:
"System One Humidity Control
System One Humidity Control Technology analyzes ambient temperature and patient airflow to reach relative humidity at the mask. This prevents rain-out from occurring inside the CPAP tube. System One is the first solution in the industry that accounts for room humidity. Sensors inside and outside the CPAP machine closely monitor changes in humidity and prevents condensation from forming inside the tube. "
I've edited my earlier post accordingly.
I'm workin' on it.
Re: S9 versus PR System One?
Oh, I should have corrected my post about the s nine coming with the climate line tubing, I read it and was just too tired to bother with it..
YOU can buy the slim line, or the climate line hose for extra, and the new ones had a problem where some cracked at the joints, but
I think they fixed that now, or you can tape them easily..
You can put hose covers on the hoses to prevent rainout but NOT On the climate line tubing!
The system one IS a nice machine if you are downloading your data every day.. and its super easy to breath with... lovely, just lovely...
Im a computer idiot, another reason i opted for the s nine.
