First Timer working with DME... So far so good

Post by KarmicLynx » Tue Apr 06, 2010 1:07 pm

Hello!

I went in for a sleep study about 2 months ago and have finally gotten through most of the red tape to get a machine and mask.

I was called today by the DME that my sleep doc works primarily with. It started much like the horror stories described here with DME's.

DME: Hey we've got your machine the doc prescribed lets make an appointment to fit you with a mask.
Me: Which machine?
DME: It's a Fisher&Paykel, heated humidifier. A really nice machine.
Me: When I spoke with the Dr Sleep he mentioned that you'd work with me to find a machine that would work for me. I've been doing some research and want a fully data capable machine so that Dr Sleep has the best possible data on hand to make sure that I'm getting the best possible treatment.
DME: Yes, it collects data about leaks and usage so that your doc can make sure your are being treated.
Me: (Having done my research I knew they also carried Respironics, sadly not Resmed) How about one of the PR System One REMstar PRO machines? It has a lot better data reporting and a humidity control system to help prevent rainouts. I'd like one of those.
DME: I'll have to talk to my (manager, not exact word she used). We'll have to order it so it will take around a week.
Me: That'll be great!

However, it didn't end in a horror story. The DME contacted me again shortly to let me know that they had one in stock and that they had an appointment time open for tomorrow!

While I would've preferred that the DME would've started out with a near top of the line machine, I can understand profit motive. However, you have to give credit that the DME was very nice on the phone, did not respond negatively when I asked for a specific machine and responded promptly when they found they had the requested unit in stock.

Hopefully tomorrow goes smoothly so I can get some good sleep.
KL

Good luck. Hopefully all goes well and this local DME provider is as good as they are sounding so far!

It must just be a co-winky-dink that so many
DME's will have to order the requested system,
because "we don't have one in stock.".....
and then "find" one the next day, on the shelf.

When I got my first Mseries Auto,
when first requested, that machine did not exist.
When I said I would bring in the documentation
for that machine.....within hours, it did exist.....
....but alas, they would have to order it. Could be weeks.
A call the next day said they had found one
"on the shelf."

Maybe these are just Festivus Miracles.

I said that.
