Removing Smartcard from APAP, how long should I wait?

Post by ycartf » Sat Feb 20, 2010 11:41 pm

I brought my M series APAP to work with me tonight because a co-worker here at the fire station was describing almost all of the OSA symptoms one looks for, and he wondered if he has OSA. I sized his face with the mask sizing calculator on cpap.com and found that one of my medium UMFFM would work for him. He goes to sleep earlier than I, so I set him up on the APAP (set to 9cm straight CPAP) and figured I would sneak in and remove the card while it was still running, get any data off of it, and reinsert it (changing pressure if data indicated). I have never removed the smartcard while it was running before, and obviously it will not work as there was no data on it. I originally inserted it once he was already lying down and on APAP (had to clean the card and set him up as the patient), so I did not know if that had anything to do with it. Since there was no data just now, I snuck back in and reinserted the smartcard, and will try it again in the morning (once he is awake and we turn the APAP off). So I wondered:

How long do you have to wait before removing the card in the morning? I want to say I have pulled it out within a minute of turning the unit off and had data.

If I went back in (reinserted it about an hour ago) and pressed the off button, gave it whatever short time, and removed the card, then hit on button, would that possibly give me some data to look at (or make adjustments based on) before I go to bed here shortly?

Thanks in advance.

Tracy

I always unplug the power to my apap, wait a few seconds and then remove the card. Then I leave the power off until I have re-inserted the card and once the card is back in the slot I plug the power back in.

I think that removing the card when the machine is running may cause a "read error" with the Smartcard, and I think this should be avoided.

I don't think it will write to the card until you turn off the machine. Not sure when after that. My system one takes several hours.
