Cold Question

Post by dkeat » Sat Sep 24, 2005 4:18 am

This may be silly, but is there any trick that you guys use with a nasal cushion interface when you get a cold and your nose is stuffy? I figure you could:

1. use drugs and nose drops, something I would not do as I consider these undesirable unless a really serious situation (like a heart attack)

2. use a FF mask

3. use nothing untill cold gone

I was just wondering if anyone had anything I didn't mention.

Sleep well.

David

I've used a saline spray to clear my nose. But I haven't had a heavy cold as yet, since using CPAP. A joy I'm yet to experience.

I have a heated hose so my trick is to crank the humidity up to it's highest senting. This gives me rainforest humidity and opens the most clogged nasal passages. Then in the morning it's back to mouth breathing with a plugged nose. Maybe I should wear my cpap to work LOL!

I'm curious about that heated hose of yours. I get a great deal of rain with my humidifier set at the lowest setting. Also have a dry nose. Would love to crank up the humidity more but it just rains out. How does the hose work? Does it plug into a wall socket or is it battery, etc?

Thanks.

David

David,

the only place you can get it is from Sleep Zone in Australia. Many of us on the forum refer to it as the Aussie heated hose (un-official name). It is a must have cpap accessory. You buy the hose from them and then get the power supply from a store like Radio Shack. If you have a Puritan Bennet 420 series machine, you can bypass the power supply and with a piggy-back connector they provide connect it in-line with the machine power supply.

Power supply for the heated hose

Post by ozij » Sat Sep 24, 2005 10:36 am

The people at sleep zone will send you the info about getting the right kind of power supply for Switzerland - it shouldn't be a problem to get it even when you don't have Radio Shack.... I know because I got one in Israel, and our voltage is the same as in Switzerland.

The heated hose makes a major major difference.

Cold question

Post by akpacfan » Sat Sep 24, 2005 10:39 am

Hello All!

I live in Juneau Alaska, in the midst of the world's second largest rain forest, the Tongass. Humidity here is 100 % nearly all the time. 170 to 200 inches of rain per year. One of the most damp, moldy places on earth yet, this is the only climate I can breathe in.

Fortunately it's Southeast Alaska, one of the most scenic parts of the world.
The bad news is that when you get a cold here, ( we refer to it as the southeast crud ). saline will help to a point but all I can do is take large amounts of vitamin C and large amounts of zinc.

I'm so new to CPAP I haven't had the crud yet to see of it helps to breathe with it.

Just takr as much vitamin C as you can stand and lots of Zinc lozenges and it helps defeat the severity and length of the cold.

I just had my first cold with CPAP two weeks ago. It was miserable! Nothing I could do would stop my nose running for a couple of days.

Let me tell you, a nose that drips like a leaky faucet combined with a nasal pillow interface like the Swift just ain't a pretty site!

I had to give up using the swift for a couple of nights and even slept semi-reclined in a La-Z-Boy recliner.

I don't know what made me happier: moving back to my own bed beside my wife or being able to resume using the Swift!

Wading,

About that heated tube. How long does that $89 investment last?

I've been using the Aussie heated hose since last October. I don't know how long they last...a good many years, I hope. But even if I had to buy one every year, it would be a good investment! Nothing stops rainout better.

Will it work with my unit?

Yes, it will, Patrick. It works with any pap machine, with or without a heated humidifier. It's designed to be used with a heated humidifier, of course; however, I've used the heated hose without any humidifier attached at all a few times. It's even nice that way, too.

Works with any mask, except that it takes a bit of extra thought to make it work with one certain mask (grrrrr)...the Comfort Curve, which uses its own proprietary hose. The Aussie heated hose can even be made to work with that mask with the right connector, coupling the Comfort Curve's hose to the Aussie heated hose.

Hi RG

Sounds durable if you've been using it that long. I wonder if it's worth mentioning electrosmog?
