Other uses for CPAP

Post by Linus » Thu Aug 27, 2009 2:54 pm

I was on a cruise with family members. My sister was having issues with her sinuses. I suggested she spend about 20-30 minutes on my CPAP at a low pressure to open up the sinuses. She went for it. I set the machine on ramp (6 cm H2O) and had her wear the mask. Surprisingly she said it improved her situation. I took out my card because I did not want her data on it.

Has anyone else done this?

No, but I've noticed that my sinuses are much better when I'm wearing my CPAP! I didn't sleep well the other night, so I finally took off my mask and dozed in the early am. My nose clogged right up without the machine.

I still need all my meds, but I think the CPAP is definitely helping my sinuses at night.

I did that last night. I took out the data card, cranked the humidifier up to high & watched TV. It helped clear my sinuses a bit.

I also slept with the humidifier up a bit higher than I usually do last night. I woke up much better. Had a bit of rainout though. Wish I had the new PR machine.

I would set my machine at 20 cm and give my sis a bad case of aerophagia in that little cabin. She used to raise hell at us boys when we were little and stunk up our shared bedroom. Now let my brother-in-law raise hell at her.

Rooster, I bet you were one of those little brothers who sat too close to your sister and breathed on her, too. Or chewed your food with mouth open and then stuck out your tongue to show the lovely mash....

Oh, those childhood memories!

I just got my machine today and hooked it up at home this evening. The cats came over to sniff and explore and I realized that if I just hooked the hose up without the mask and set the pressure on 20cm, I could blow it on them while I'm brushing them and get SO much more excess cat hair.

Wow, all these uses for a CPAP. Perhaps I should have one in every room in the house!

As a life-long allergy and asthma patient, I always woke up in the morning stuffed up. Since starting on CPAP, it has almost been a miracle cure for this stuffiness. In fact, I started on a full face mask because I often could not breathe through my nose. Since moving to a nasal mask, my nose is clear, even during hay fever season. I think it is due to two things. First, the pressure from the CPAP. Second, I am no longer breathing the air around my pillow and bedding, but rather, breathing air filtered by the CPAP machine. This keeps me from breathing in the dust and other stuff from the bedding. This was a very unexpected but positive benefit of treatment.

Even turned all the way up, my empty H4i humidifier won't pop popcorn.

I also have asthma, but the humidifier makes me more stuffy and very ,very wheezy- I have to turn mine off and just use it in passover mode; otherwise I have NO voice at all (no comments, peanut gallery!! ) and can't stop coughing for days. (It's probably my hubby that sneaks it on every now and then just by accident to get some quiet....) As our 4 yr-old grandson, Noah, says, "Sometimes, accidents happen-and sometimes, accidents NOT happen." Seems like he has it all figured out.

-john-,

It is likely you have a very common allergy to dust mites. Not a nice thought, but our bedding is covered with the dust of the mites dry dead remains. This dust will go through a CPAP filter. However, your CPAP is sitting on a piece of furniture and little of the dust migrates from the bed to the air intake of the CPAP.

It filters out the dust that used to irritate my nose. But because of this my body no longer adjusts to the foreign particles.
