power failure and feeling of suffocation

Had a power failure for the second night in a row. First night I felt like I was choking. Pretty horrible. Last night I woke up and couldn't sleep at all since I'm on my 8th month of CPAP and I can't sleep without it. Does anyone know of an automatic battery backup that kicks in automatically during a power outage so that sleep can continue undisturbed??

I'm pretty sure that the Everest 2 bundle will do that. Others will chime in if this is incorrect.

MY machine does not automatically kick in, I have to get up and connect the battery back up to it. It only takes a couple of minutes and I am back to sleep no matter what the power does!

I was thinking a computer backup power supply, would need to see how much a CPAP machine draws but I'd bet it'll last a long while with a big enough power supply..

nice thing is you wouldn't even know it'd kicked on unless you had an alarm on the backup power.

I have the Respironics Battery Pack that I bought on CPAP.Com. In fact if you look at the battery page for stand alone batteries I believe it
is the first one listed for $299. For my machine fully charged I can get more than 24 hours ( a good 3 nights of sleep) of CPAP use before having to recharge.

Thanks jrfoster! I have the same battery pack. I bought it about 3 years ago and have never had to use it. The information said it could last 3 nights and a bit at my pressure, fully charged, I keep thinking I should try it even though there has not been a power outage during the night here in 3 + years! I try to remember to top up the charge every few months so that, if I needed it, I could just plug it in!

What CPAP do you have? Do you use a humidifier?

The Everest and the Intellipap both switch automatically to 12v supply if the mains power fails, though I'm not sure if the Intellipap humidifier will work on 12v. The everest definitely will.

If the CPAP doesn't have an automatic feature then a computer "uninteruptible power supply" (UPS) would be the only solution which happens automatically.
The UPS is basically a battery and an inverter in one package, with automatic changeover to battery if the power goes off.
They are designed to keep the battery topped up and always ready for use, and will kick in automatically - just make sure you get one with a big enough battery for your CPAP.
How long do the outages last for. Is it only for a short time or the whole night? That will effect the battery requirements.
If you get a UPS turn off the audible warning. Not much good if it beeps at you once it switches to battery supply - may as well connect it manually if that's the case.
