pillow talk
pillow talk
I'm considering getting a cpap pillow to help with mask leaks. I find myself tightening my mask to keep it on when I sleep on my stomach or side because the pillow will push it. I know that's not what I should be doing. I've tried variations of folding pillows, tying them in the middle, angling them and what not. Nothing has been working.
So before I throw down some cash on a pillow that I potentially won't like, I'd like to get some feedback from people. I like my pillows to be firm, really firm if possible. My wife jokes that I sleep on bricks instead of pillows. I probably could if the brick had a pillowcase, lol. (On a side note, we were at a hotel back in October that only had squishy soft pillows. I took the cushions off the couch and slept on them. Of course, I also sleep like a football player who's been in a car wreck: neck upturned, pillow clutched under one arm.) I've also tried sleeping on my back, but that doesn't work either.
I digress, back on topic. Which cpap pillow out there is the firmest? Firm as in will hardly give to any pressure on it.

Re: pillow talk
PAPillow Double edge is really firm. http://www.papillow.com/. I personally also find a $12 memory foam contoured pillow from Big Lots to be very firm, but not quite deep enough (I fold up a beach towel under it to bring it up to the right height for side-sleeping). The PAPillow is expensive, but works really well for me.

Re: pillow talk
If you like a firm pillow, you'll probably like the PAPillow. I got one 3 months ago, and found it took a little getting used to because it is so firm, but I like it fine now. I find it better than a std. pillow for mask leak management

Re: pillow talk
I took someone elses advice and headed over to Big Lots and bought one of those memory foam pillows to cut up. Wow, what a light pillow. My "real" memory foam pillows ways about 10 times as much. But then it costs about 4 times as much as well...vaderboi wrote:I'm considering getting a cpap pillow to help with mask leaks. Anyway, I'm gonna slice and dice on that puppy and make my own CPAP pillow. If it works well enough, I might slice up my TempurPedic one...

Exactly why I bought one from Big Lots. A really much less expensive way to experiment.SharkBait wrote:

The double edge PAPillow. It does give some to pressure -- if it didn't, I couldn't use it. But it's pretty darn firm.vaderboi wrote:I like my pillows to be firm, really firm if possible. My wife jokes that I sleep on bricks instead of pillows.

Re: pillow talk
Hi,
Have a memory foam pillow from Brookstone. It works well for me and my Fisher Paykel 432 full face mask, it is thin but is heavy (I mean pick it up weight heavy.)
My wife has decided to get me a CPAP Pillow--Well when I get it, I'll let you know. I don't normally like a firm pillow. Timw will tell

Re: pillow talk
Slicing and dicing on this pillow and tried it out -- really nice. I went ahead and put the pillow case back on and it gives plenty for my mask to move, both the full face and the Swift LT. Took a nap for a little over an hour and slept on my side with my mask in the pocket, never had a single leak.plr66 wrote:Exactly why I bought one from Big Lots. I'm not ready to start slicing on my TempurPedic yet, I might wait until the foam breaks down on this other one. It really is a much cheaper grade of foam.

Re: pillow talk
Shark, could you possibly post a photo of your "surgery"? Or a good description of what you did. We've done it with our Walmart foam pillow($12) but it's not quite right,I think we carved it out too much, left it quite small, so we found a wider one (standard/queen) and hubby was doing OK with it for awhile as is, but now is having leaking issues again. He uses a FF mask but would like to see how you carved yours out. Thanks, Dori

Re: pillow talk
Although I am still doing CPAP on a trial basis I have purchased on of these Contour pillows and it makes a world of difference. I researched the PaPillow prior to my purchase and by all accounts it was quite thick which supposedly made it a little uncomfortable. I also bought a 1" piece of foam and shaped it like the Contour Pillow and added in into the pillow case. Height is just right for me. Worth a look.

Re: pillow talk
Peggy has a pattern for PillowPal. Do a search and ask her nicely. She'll email you the pattern.
I've been too lazy to sew, but have just punched my fluffy pillow into shape (sort of).

Re: pillow talk
I took a hacksaw blade and cut what was basically a 6" X 6" square chunk from each side. After last night, I'm going to make it another inch or two off of the front (fat part) of the pillow as the hole is a little too far away I found.DoriC wrote:Shark, could you possibly post a photo of your "surgery"? A nice side improvement is I can take the fleece pieces off of my mask now since the mask no longer digs into the pillow (and consequently into my face). I just transferred those little pieces to the hose of my Liberty back-up mask.
