Ha....I have a fretless Jeff....the arthritic fingers still don't wanna move!!!
Actually I've got 5 or 6 bass guitars of various flavors - fretless, frets, 4 string, 5 string -- my fav is my Fender Jazz - -just sounds and plays the best...
Can't up the pressure - -causes centrals.....range 11-15 and don't usually get over 13.....
I guess I'll scrounge around in my collection of "crap" and see if I can find a slide....
Brain Fried??? Who me???
cheers

If raising your pressure a few cm doesn't work, just raise your action a few mm for slide. Seriously, I hear it works better on a fretless with raised action. With a fretted bass, even with high action, the frets get in the way because of how loose the strings are in standard tuning. Not that I've done it. Just what I've heard said."A few musicians have used slides with bass guitar—slide bass. Mark Sandman was probably the best known proponent (with Morphine, he performed primarily on a custom two-string slide bass guitar). Bill Laswell, Robert Weaver, Kevin Rutmanis and Marc Sloan, and Stefan Lessard of the Dave Matthews Band have also played slide bass. John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin has performed on a custom-made bass lap steel. Jazz bassist Victor Wooten occasionally uses a slide for soloing during his live performances."
All the good bass players I know have fried brains. One bass player I knew tried to fix that with a brain-ectomy, and woke up from surgery as a drummer.
(Note: Some of my best friends are drummers. Of course, I have no normal friends, so maybe that's not saying much. But bass and drums come from the heart, some say lower--the brain just gets in the way. )
The bass player I most often record with uses a Fender Jazz. Seems to me it does pert' near everything that needs to get done in any session I've ever participated in, and does it plugged straight into the board, too.
I can't play slide worth a plug nickle. Seems to me that playing slide is harder on the fingers, not easier. Hope you have a blast doing it!
This is all still on topic, right?!

Re: Attn Newbies: your brain may be fried.....
You did mention a fried brain, so I guess that keeps it on topic....
Well now. It sounds like I'll be in good company if I can finger it out.....
I didn't remember JPJones with the "sit down", but now that you mention it!!!!
Duck Dunn, Dave Mason, Jack Bruce, Geddy Lee, John Entwistle, Roger Waters, and one of my very favorites John Lodge.......
I only left out a hundred more.....
I like the Jazz because it plays smooth and you can make it sound either "driven" or "soft" or anywhere in between......My Hofner knock off is probably one of the mellowest bass guitars I've ever played....Too fragile for my pounding though - I have to be reallllllly careful when I play it.....
I believe you are correct in that playing with a slide can be much more difficult -- ya got one point to make all the notes instead of 4....
I did drums for a while, but that was a long time ago!!!
A quick trip down memory lane.......
cheers

What a wonderfully upbeat, encouraging and informative discussion! I soaked up every bit of it.
Unfortunately, as a new user (4 mths), I am not raking in the benefits as many of you have described. I have also gained weight since starting c-pap. My
experience has been more like "Nobody's". I was really hoping to feel a big difference by now.
I even tried registering and filling out the profile here, but even here I failed. I did not see my machine or humidifier on any of the options. I am sorry to say I am floundering.
Thanks for a really good post.

Keep asking questions.
Keep trying stuff, if it doesn't work, find something else to try.
Keep asking questions.
Make it happen!

Hah.
I just sent this thread to my husband. No, I am not trying to give him the message he should go in for a sleep study. He sleeps just fine. However, he plays Bass. He just got home last night from spending the day with 50 other bassists in SF Bay Area comparing gear and hanging out (all friends from a bass forum). I thought he might laugh, especially as he is also a drummer! I wonder if I should get him a slide for his birthday?

Re: Attn Newbies: your brain may be fried.....
he has three, not including the acoustic. And I won't buy him a bass. Too risky to get the wrong one. He has to do that himself.

Last night I dreamed I got dragged off a trolley and beaten to a pulp by 51 bassist/drummers.crossfit wrote: . . . sent this thread to my husband. . . . he plays Bass. . . . spending the day with 50 other bassists in SF Bay Area . . . he is also a drummer!. . .
My excuse for my post is that my brain was fried and the OP is a fellow 6er. Well, that and the fact that I played drums in one band and bass in another but never quite got the hang of either instrument. So my post was pure jealousy. It's the rhythm section that has to be sober, good at math, and thinking about several things at once, or it all falls apart. My theory is that 6-stringers can make themselves good if they are willing to practice six hours a day, but you have to be born a bassist or drummer in order to be the kind of guy who can lock it all down and make everyone else in the band feel safe gig after gig.
Hopefully this post will allow me once again to safely dream about Fillmore venues.

Your theories and reflections are spot on.jnk wrote: My theory is that 6-stringers can make themselves good if they are willing to practice six hours a day, but you have to be born a bassist or drummer in order to be the kind of guy who can lock it all down.
That oxygen is certainly not going to waste on you.

Re: Attn Newbies: your brain may be fried.....
Yikes! aren't Complex regional pain syndrome, amputated leg and Multiple Sclerosis enough disabilities?? I can carry a few more chronic health problems but when it comes to disabilities i have had my fill!Be aware that you are working w/a disability, admitted or not.
All jokes aside i can understand how the effects of sleep apnea build up so gradually over time that we do not notice a lot of it -we just kind of adapt bit by bit until either someone else realizes what is happening to us or we reach some kind of health crisis. I had actually been complaining of severe fatigue for quite some time but severe debilitating fatigue is actually not that uncommon with multiple sclerosis so that is what my Doctors and i had been blaming. Eventually while i was in hospital last year with a flare up of the MS, the nursing staff noted i was having long periods of apnea and they checked my oxygen sats and found they were in the low 50's- all of a sudden my neurologist said that he felt at least a good deal of the fatigue may be sleep apnea. it seems that neurological damage is a major factor in my sleep apnea but at least by getting it under control the fatigue has a good chance of easing off and i will be so glad, i can deal with using a wheelchair but when i am going trhough a rough patch with the ms the fatigue gets so bad that i barely have the energy to sit up! I was glad to read that even some effects such as co ordination etc used to play guitar can improve as that means some of the other effcts that have been attributed to MS may actually be sleep apnea- even if they are only partly due to sleep apnea that would be great. Now its just a case a repaying some of that sleep debt
