Remstar Auto no longer "auto on"

Post by biggziff » Tue Nov 04, 2008 5:22 pm

My 3+ year old Remstar Auto will no longer turn on by me simply breathing with the mask on my face (Swift II) I went into the clinician menu and can't find any setting for disabling/enabling this function.

Any thoughts?

thanks

You have a leak. Some masks are harder to seal so this feature works. There is NO Setting to find. You have a leak.

Thanks, but I've tried it with 3 hoses, 2 masks, used it without the HH as well as replaced the HH seal. Unless you're suggesting there is an internal leak I don't think this is the issue.

There is no way to enable/disable AutoOn. you can disable AutoOFF but not AutoOn.

Then if AutoOn works is dependent on the mask you use. Think about it, if it detects your breathing it usually starts in 4 breaths.

AutoOn and AutoOff is incompatible with most FF masks on the market. The reason is the anti-asphyxia or entrainment valve that FF masks come equipped with. Same for Resmed's SmartStart feature.

Auto:OFF is a very very stupid feature when you think about it, it is for lazy people only.

The machine is NOT detecting you breathing. Call it what you will but that IS the problem.
Good Luck,

I'm thinking that the machine is 'hosed"...

Turn the AutoOff On. If it stops, then the problem is with the interface. If it doesn't stop, then I would say your machine (or at least the AutoOn) is indeed hosed!

Can't find anything relating to Auto-Off in any of the menus. Where is it supposed to be?

In the older machine you have, the AutoOFF setting is probably the "Patient Disconnect" setting -- just called "Alert" in the menu window. "Alert" is the next to the last setting in the therapy setup menu:

The Patient Disconnect should be kept turned off -- zero.

However, that setting has nothing to do with the problem you're having, biggziff. As Snoredog mentioned, the feature that's supposed to make the machine turn on automatically when you breathe a few times into the mask is called "Auto On" and can't be turned off. "Auto ON" (breathing in and out several times starts the machine) is a built-in feature and doesn't appear in the menu at all.

I guess you've tried using very strong huffing breaths in and out 3 or 4 times into the mask, to see if it will start automatically. I've noticed that breathing lightly into the mask doesn't work as well to start the older machines as forceful breaths do. The new M series machines are more sensitive to lighter breaths to start them. Me...I'd rather just push the button with any of them.

I'd read that description RG put up again closely.

When you "toggle" that feature it EITHER enables Auto Off or it beeps. Now if you develop a large leak during the night
with Auto Off enabled, the machine will shut off from a Large Leak. That means you will be sleeping with
the machine OFF and rebreathing your exhaled CO2.

That feature was designed by an idiot. You don't want the machine shutting off from a large leak. If you are using
a full face mask with a flapper style valve like the Quattro and others, you are screwed, the machine will NEVER
restart during the night and your mask will be there just for cosmetics as it takes pressure from the machine to
change that flapper valve from the bypass mode. With the mask in bypass mode due to lack of pressure it will
NEVER sense your breathing.

Did I mention AutoOFF is a really stupid feature? I think the guy that designed that feature went on to
design the M series humidifier. What is even more funny is when you see the competion copy it on
their own.

Thanks...that setting has always been set to 0, so no worries there.

Ya, I hooked up a hose direct to the machine and huffed until I was dizzy....no start. So, I'll call the fine folks locally to see what they can do for me. Maybe a shiny new M series is in my future....

If I do end up with an M, will the Encore software and generic reader work with the M?

Thanks for all your help.

Because if one feature is nor longer responding to your breathing, who knows how the other features will respond - and what they will - or will not - respond to.

The auto-on feature relies on a sudden spike---a quick slope from no flow to typical peak flow. One possibility is air restriction on the intake side. I'd temporarily remove the air filter(s) and see if auto-on works once again. If so, you may need different filters. Dust impeding impeller rotation could conceivably dampen any zero-to-peak flow spike required by the auto-on feature as well. In that case an internal cleaning with compressed air may be necessary.

If the impeller can "free wheel" the required sudden flow spike is not dampened. If the impeller can no longer "free wheel" easily, that sudden flow spike becomes restricted. The flow sensor is at the front of the machine, but an unrestricted end-to-end flow path is still necessary for this feature to work well.

Agreed that another possibility is firmware, control-circuit execution, etc. And if the machine ends up being usable, it would be wise to verify pressure output with a manometer.
