Respironics Heated Humidifier

Post by Yoga » Sun May 22, 2005 7:46 am

Is anyone having a problem with the Respironics Heated Humidifier? The one I have is about one year old and last night it died. If the water level gets too low, will this have an effect on the humidifier?

If the water level gets very low or is zero, the humidifier will continue to try to meet the heating plate temperature window. With no water in the chamber, it will heat up and cool off very quickly, so the unit will be cycling on and off frequently. This humidifier has been reliable. Certainly everyone who uses a heated humidifier will run it out of water occasionally with no harm done. I doubt yours failed due to no water.

Respironics is making a baffle for their humidifier tank, kind of an anti siphon to help keep water from splashing into the CPAP device. It is included with a new humidifier. For those who have had their humidifier for a while the baffle does come separately, it just snaps into the water reservoir. It goes inside the water tank where the air come out of the CPAP.

I know this doesn’t help answer your question, but if you get a new humidifier you might check that it includes the baffle

I got mine at an Awake meeting a little over a month ago from a Respironics representative.

On the subject of the heated humidifier - I am wondering how warm the plate should feel to the touch?

I have checked mine immediately after turning off the machine, after running all night, and the bottom plate is JUST barely warm - it seems to me that that would not really "heat" any water in the tank. Our bedroom temp right now is probably about 60 so not very cold and maybe that's why it's just barely warm to the touch? Does this seem like it's working correctly?

It probably is working as it should. It doesn't get extremely hot and it also seems to warm up in cycles.
The PR S 1 machines are set as default to the new humidification system using the sensors in the machine respond to relative room ambient humidity and it simply may not need to warm up much to get the job done. It doesn't take extreme heat to increase humidity levels. So it depends on room humidity and your machine humidity setting.

Now if you change the humidifier setting over to the older "Classic" mode with heat only and not use the humidity sensors....it will heat more and use more water. Even then if you happen to check the heating plate it is not so hot as to be uncomfortable to touch.
