Oral Mask?

Post by laurelonthehill » Sun Oct 21, 2007 12:05 pm

Greetings! Has anyone out there had any experience with the oral mask? I've tried the nasal mask with heated humidifier, but my mouth-leak wakes me over and over again. I've tried the full-face mask, but woke up with a paiful stomach full of swallowed air and vomited. In desperation, I'm considering the oral mask. Any ideas?

I have tried the oral mask twice, but have not made it more than about an hour.

I find it a very uncomfortable mouth position, and I have recently been plagued by TMJ for the first time, and I have been wondering if it was due to using the oral mask - even for that short time. You might not be affected by the mouth position so much.

My mouth got horribly dry - even with cranking up the humidifier. I think that alone would keep me awake, even if my mouth position were comfy. I have heard that this gets a bit better with time.

I did like that I didn't have stuff all over my face and around my head. I expected to not like having my nose plugged, but I used swimming nose plugs (the coated wire kind) and it was not bad at all.

If you are interested, I would be happy to send the oral mask to see if it works for you - and you could either send it back, or we could negotiate a trade or sale.

Betty's report is typical for that mask, search for CPAPPro mask using the Search box, there are lots of comments on it, mostly NOT favorable.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Laurel, if you're talking about the Fisher & Paykel HC452 Oracle mask...the same mask I think Betty is also talking about, you can turn up quite a few discussions about it if you'll type this entire phrase into a Google search:

oracle mask site:cpaptalk.com

Be sure to not put any spaces in the part of the phrase that says
site:cpaptalk.com

That part needs to run all together.

Google often works better than trying to use the Search button at upper left of this page.

I sure wish I could find one favorable write up of the CPAPPro so I could con myself into buying it. It looks so great to me.

My GF is a hairstylist and we have a bunch of mannequin heads in the closet, so I am going to set up all my masks and headgear this weekend, buy some velcro, tape, guaze, and ace bandages and have an inventors tweakend. I plan on emerging with the perfect solution to my problems.

If not, I'll probably just buy a NAII..

I wanted the oral mask to work so badly. I even put off my titration until they had one for me to try. Granted, my experience with masks was so limited that if I tried it again maybe my experience would be difference. However, I doubt it. Plastic in the mouth causes salivation and the direct pressure into the mouth/airway is uncomfortable. I was so disenchanted that I didn't pursue the mask.

After an array of masks, I finally settled on another that is also not poplular - but it works for me. The Mirage Vista. The headgear needs a restyle but since there are so few users they probably don't bother. It tends to push up on the ear lobe and the straps slip if not fastened into place.

wow, I feel for you.

the fact that your swallowing air bothers me. that is painful. your pressure may need to be reduced. I don't know if an oral mask alone can fix that.

I tried the Oracle and didn't make it past 30 minutes. I drooled so much it was embarrassing(not to mention NASTY)! I decided to give up that idea.
