A good sealant

I read somewhere, maybe it was on this forum, that LANSINOH brand lanilon was a good sealant to use on nasal pillows or prongs. I picked some up at Walgreens ($10 a tube) and WOW they were right. Just a very light coat of this stuff really makes my optilife seal to my nares. A little bit goes a long way. Now my nose is so soft it is amazing. This creme is thicker than Ayr and is used by nursing mothers. I can imagine that it works good for that also. Just for your information. Happy breathing......jim

I would think that "sheep fat" (lanolin) would make those pilows slide so far that they wouldn't stop till they got stuck in your hair! One person's initial thought.

What a coincidence: I was about to post the question as to whether anyone knew of a cream or something that would help pillows stick to the nares.

So this stuff gets sticky after it's applied?

My Hybrid mask is comfortable, but the blasts of air keep waking me when the pillows slip out and start shooting into my eyes, not to mention the hissing sound.

I have used Blistex and seems to work as well as the AYR Gel.

While it is made up of fatty acids and esters, it is really more of a waxy substance than a cream. It is very similar to sebum, which our skin produces. It is extremely tacky and has skin softening properties which is why it is perfect for healing skin and giving pillows users some grab. If you are having trouble sealing without lansinoh, you may need the next bigger size pillows.

Unfortunately, I am already using the largest pillows that the Hybrid mask comes with. I think my nostrils are the size of a typical 55-gallon drum. I can insert the entire mask into my nose - pillows and all!

All kidding aside, when the pillows are in my nose, they seal pretty well. It's KEEPING THEM THERE that I need to do!

Good point. The hybrid pillows came out at a weird angle for me too--but I have a receded jaw, so I thought it was just me. The liberty pillows are at a better angle if you get a chance to try it. Unfortunately for me the receded jaw transferred the pain to the upper lip with that one. No ff's for me!

Good to use humor, but I'm sure your nares look just fine. Easy to get a complex when all this "standard size" crap doesn't fit right isn't it?

I have had some weird adventures in masking. I'm 6' tall woman, large framed. I have successfully used size xsml thru size med in various mask incarnations. Very weird.

Not sure if I'll get the chance to try the Libery. I had to pay for the Hybrid out of my own pocket, as the medical equipment company didn't carry it. At $150 a pop, I think I'll have to stick with the masks that the medical equipment company handles. And they don't handle the Liberty. But thanks for the suggestion.

I did recently go back to the medical equipment company to get a Resmed Ultra Mirage full face mask; haven't tried it yet. No pillows with this one. This is my third mask. I've been a hosehead for a month.

I hear ya about "standard size". One size fits all? Not in the wonderful world of CPAP/BiPAP therapy! I read somewhere recently in these forums that some woman was on her 20th mask. Poor thing.

I don't think you're unusual in having a large frame and small face. I for one am out of proportion in so many respects, I am impossible to clothe!

If they can get other resmed masks, they can order it for you. Don't believe them if they say they "don't stock it"--that is complete and utter crap. If they keep telling you stuff like that, I would fire them and take my insurance money somewhere else.

The weird thing is, I think I look pretty proportional? Don't appear to have delicate features or anything. . . ?

My sleep doc suggested a solution I use (both in and underneath my nose) -- may sound a bit weird but it's KY jelly (I'm actually using the newer liquid version). Since it's water soluble it won't degrade the silicone of the mask or pillows, and it protects my skin and helps "seat" the nasal pillows. I only use a few drops.

And let's not get too carried away with the potential humor of this one!!

From your picture, you DO look pretty proportional. I gave up trying to figure out my dimensions a long time ago!

Hmmm... when I told the guy at the medical equipment company that I was going to order the Hybrid mask on my own, he made no offer to order it. But I will certainly take your advise and try insisting next time.
