Will my M Series Auto CPAP with A-Flex do this?

Post by mrammell » Tue Jul 31, 2007 1:48 pm

I have the above unit as a travel unit, but I haven't used the A-flex feature, I use the remstar Pro2 at home with a pressure setting of 12. I haven't felt as chipper lately and wonder if I need a little more air. I don't want to do another sleep study, if I need more pressure, will the A-flex automatically determine what I need and adjust? Is this a dumb question? I haven't used bi-pap,etc. Your help is appreciated.

Yes it will auto-adjust based on the events it detects or doesn't detect. The Digital Auto-Trak will read each breath and the auto-algorithm will continue looking for Pcrit and Popt throughout the night.

Your doctor can adjust the device for its proper setting.

Good luck!

The A-Flex is only a exhale pressure release to make it easier to exhale against the pressure. Running the machine in auto mode will give you a reading of the highest and lowest pressure it takes to keep you open. It will give you a 90% reading which is what most set in standard CPAP mode.

This may not be totally correct but in laymans terms I think this is the way it works.

By using Encore Pro, with your Pro 2, you can do the same thing. But, I see you are using a nasal mask. Mouthleaks, can undo your treatment, is so the data and pressure changes mean very little if you have too high a leak rate. A-Flex like C-Flex, are comfort features. APAP mode, changes the pressure to what you need if leaks are under control.

They should have found a different name for A-Flex, it confuses too many people with the function of APAP. Also when you are designing things, the first try is named A (series), as the product matures it becomes B (series), Remstar seems to be flying backwords in the marketing department, I guess pulling the software from users, points to that too. mrammell, I'm not a doctor or anything in the health care field.

If it were me, and I'd been using a pressure of 12 in straight cpap mode, I'd give these settings a try with the M Auto with A-flex:

Therapy Mode: Auto

Comfort Type: A-flex

Auto:Max 20.0 cmH20

Auto:Min 10.0 cmH20

A-Flex Setting: 3 (or 2 -- whatever feels more comfortable to you.)

Ramp Time: 0:00

Mask Alert - Feature: OFF

uto Off - Feature: ON

Split Night Time - Off (It's very important to always have the "Split NightTime" setting turned "OFF.")

Show AHI/Leak - Feature ON
Patient Reminder - Off
ResMed S9 VPAP Auto (ASV)
Humidifier: Integrated + Climate Control hose
Mask: Aeiomed Headrest (deconstructed, with homemade straps
3M painters tape over mouth

It all depends on how you are tolerating the current 12cm pressure;

if you would like some additional relief, lower your Minimum pressure from 12cm to say 10 cm, then use AFlex on #2 setting (get used to using it lower than maximum offered limits if you can that way you always have some more room if needed).

If you are used to 12cm on Cflex, I would set it to:

Auto:Min=12 (where you are at now)
Auto:Max=15
AFlex=2

Aflex will seem effortless compared to Cflex at the same pressure.

But if you are thinking you need a higher pressure than on your Pro now, you can bump pressure by 1 cm and see what happens, the Aflex machine would do that automatically if the pressure you need is within the set Min-Max range set.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
