I have a slight suspicion that I might be allergic to the castor oil. Is it really necessary for the ocm, or could you just use EVOO mixed with another oil? (I'm allergic to a lot of stuff and my skin got red and blotchy when I used it). I'm going to look online to read about allergies to castor oil and see what I think. It was cold pressed from the health food store.
Rose, for roseacea I would take castor oil out of the mix and stick with the easily absorbed oils. Jojoba would be important ingredient bc it is similar to sebum. Castor beans are actually poisonous and i think for anyone whose skin is inflamed it would be a bad idea. I used to work in a garden center and we had to keep the castor beans on a high shelf to make sure kids didn't get at them and always tried to warn customers with children when they bought them. Only a few beans can make a child very ill or possibly kill them.

That said, castor oil has been used for generations internally for--what? Nutrition, constipation or what. Syrup of ipecac was used to induce vomiting so what was castor oil used for? What I'm saying is: Babette: don't freak out! I don't think castor oil is dangerous. If I did, I wouldn't be using it. Maybe a little research is warranted, but I'm not going to let you guys freak out!

Rose, I truly believe that ocm could help your roseacea. It cleared up my eczema within a few weeks after months of using cortaid! Now if I could just find the time to be putting it on my scalp more.

I actually got a tip from the hairdresser yesterday when I asked her about allergy to hair dye. She said I need to normalize my scalp pH by doing vinegar rinses after washing sessions. Since that is the 2nd or 3rd time I have heard that, I think I will be trying it now.

I do wonder what happened to Christine. It seems like at least a week since we heard from her? Must be on vacation. Lets not panic!

jennmary, I went out and bought some supplies for making soap last night. My husband and I are planning on making a batch this sunday if I can find the lye.

NO, Babs, I haven't found all the ingredients. After Harry was put to bed last night I drove around to hardware stores but they were all closed by that time (8pm--good grief). So, I'm going to call around today because I just can't drag a 4 year old all over God's creation looking for lye, washing soda and fells naptha! I have looked for the ingredients so far at every store I had to go to for regular reasons but had no luck. Home depot, lowes, walmart, target. Oh, I forgot at the grocery store, yesterday but it was supper time.

At least I can get borax everywhere. I think it is really helping the laundry bc I have very hard water.

babs, I think I am getting an NAII, bravo and opus with my trades--can't believe the luck! I'm very, very happy with the swift I got from Blarg, I can't imagine being any happier with an interface (unless it addressed mouth breathing) but time will tell!

I went to walmart last night to get boil and bit guards. Going to be trying the homemade tongue positioner idea again. Snoredog gave me some new ideas to try.

Oh JennMary... YOU TOO???????????????

Yeah, that's why I'm trying to restrain myself from buying lip balm making materials. I get all hot for some project, then either it bombs, or I never finish it.

I must say the DIY laundry soap has turned out well. Takes zero time, and so far works well. Whew!

LOL,
B.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

Babette, I think I'm going to have to give in and order from your old fashioned soap website. I called all over town today and couldn't find washing soda or fels naptha ANYWHERE. No grocery store or hardware store carries it here. I wanted to avoid paying shipping, but I already wasted time (time = money) calling and driving around.

I did find a source for lye for making soap at home though. Yeah!

Be warned, it takes forever to get there! But I have to say I love not having to grate the soap. Takes 5 seconds to mix and put up in containers. I got some tallish tupperware type containers that fit in my cabinet and put it in those.

Cheers,
B.

Picked up Curly Girl today at the Library. Harry got his very own library card today--you should have seen how happy he was! He even got to write his name on the back--how many 3-year (almost 4) olds get that excited over a library card--yep he wasn't switched at birth, that is for sure!

I have straight hair...always wanted curly until I got a perm. I think I will stick with straight.

I think I am going to do a batch or soap this weekend as well. Just seems like fun. Plus I am still in search of the perfect cure for my nieces skin issues. So maybe an all natural handmade soap will help....or maybe I am just looking for an activity that will keep me from cleaning the house.

I went on a mini shopping spree today. lol

I got avocado, jojoba, and rosemary oil. I also picked up some different sugars to try a sugar scrub. I think I will pick up some honey for that too. I also got apple cider vinegar.

I am having a beauty night. lol Plucked the brows, painted nails, and did a pedicure complete with new sugar scrub. My feet feel very nice. Now I have a very good glass of wine, and am getting ready to lay down.

It has been so long since I pampered myself that I forgot how good it feels.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!! For YEARS I've had this joke about how I hate to house clean and will find ANY EXCUSE not to clean house!!! My projects are the best excuse - I have to shop all day to get the stuff, come home too tired to do the project, don't ever do the project, and the house never gets clean either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL,

JennMary, check out Curly Girl ANYWAY for great tips on how to care for your hair without shampooing.

I wish I had more than just WAVES!!!! But I'm going to stick with the program and see if my curls don't "develop" the way the author says they will over time.

Jen, have you tried any of the scalp treatments from Curly Girl yet? I think that brown sugar scrub would be good, as well as the Aloe Vera and the Whipped Cream. I bought some Aloe Vera and plan to do that. Heck, I think I'll try them all....

I think it's really interesting that NO WHERE does she mention the ACV rinse.

Cheers,
B.

I think this is the site Christine mentioned earlier for Vinegar recipes. Anyway, found Vinegar rinse and a shampoo recipe:

http://www.care2.com/greenliving/basic- ... ioner.html

I think I'd skip the egg or dairy ingredients, and just stick with fresh or dried herbs. I'll post if I decide to mix this up.

Here's the vinegar rinse:
http://www.care2.com/greenliving/apple- ... board.html

Hair rinse: Apple cider vinegar gets rid of residue build-up on hair, leaving it soft and shiny. Mix 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar with 1 quart water and use as a final rinse after shampooing.

I used to use this when I was in high school. Need to get back to it. I also like the acne tip:

Overnight facial: Get rid of blemishes and make your skin more youthful by patting apple cider vinegar on your face before bed. You’ll have softer, smoother skin in the morning!

Lightening age spots: Dab areas with straight apple cider vinegar and leave on overnight.

And maybe this might help Jen's scalp:

Dandruff fighter: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar to 3 parts warm water to balance scalp pH and control dandruff. You can also apply undiluted vinegar to the scalp. Allow it to penetrate, then shampoo with a mild shampoo.

Maybe just condition instead of following with shampoo?

Cheers,
B.

Night time moisturizer?

Post by gasp » Sat Jul 21, 2007 10:39 am

There is so much information in this thread my head is spinning. I really need to take the time to just read it all. But I'm going to be lazy:

Is there a consensus on what can be used on the skin at night and not interfere with mask materials?

I had no wrinkles prior to using the mask and now I'm getting fine lines under my eyes from the mask pushing up into this area at night. I need something to protect my skin. Help!

I think it's very individual. I use the OCM at night and have no leakage problems, but I'm using a nasal prong mask. Depends on what mask you're using, really, and I think you just need to experiment.

I'm sorry about the fine lines. I just don't have any good answers....

Sorry!

I am also starting to see wrinkles from my mask. Not in the eye area...those have all but disapeared. But the grooves next to my nose are looking pretty crappy. I use the ocm and wear a full face mask...no leaks. Though I have to keep my hair in a bun and the headgear under it otherwise my mask slips up and starts leaking in my eyes. I use a small...but have to wear it low. I think I could go a size smaller if they made one.

Yeah babette....got the same problem. The project never gets done and the house never gets cleaned. I do however waste money buying the project stuff....and then make a bigger mess by leaving it all out. lol

OK, there are three of us who do this! This is officially an ILLNESS! What is the cure? I think hiring a maid would be a great cure, but for a stay at home mom to hire a maid is pretty outrageous!

When my son complains about wanting to play with me when I'm scrubbing something I always ask him, if I don't do it, who will? He says, nobody, of course. Then I say, what if mommy never cleaned the house at all--he says, "that would be pretty scary and messy, mom!" Little does he know our house is far less clean than most of the other houses he visits on a regular basis--unless their dirty little secret is whirlwind cleaning for two days b4 hosting our Mom's group too!

Whole weeks go by and sometimes we just don't pick up the toys. So, there we all are, tripping over them and shoving them out of the way. Can't vacuum with all those toys on the floor! If I don't vacuum, not going to bother with mopping because everyone will just track it all into the kitchen in no time. Turns into a vicious cycle that is usually broken by hosting mom's group!
