Brief switch to mouth breathing brings on lots of events

Post by BigWing » Sat Jun 15, 2024 2:15 am

I had a unique situation (for me) last night. I awoke after 6.5 hours (having had zero events, which is becoming quite normal) and turned over....only to suddenly feel that my nose was so blocked that I couldn't really breathe through it (as I normally do). So I thought "no problem, I'm wearing an FFM so I can just switch to mouth breathing without affecting anything".

Wrong! For the next 30 minutes or so, my ResMed 10 recorded 9 CA's and 2 OA's! Could it be that I subconsciously kept trying to revert to nose-breathing (so mouth closes and tongue goes to roof of mouth, as I have tried to train myself to do)....but couldn't? So, after 20 seconds (typically) of no breathing, my body switched to its backup plan of mouth breathing. Then the cycle started again?

Oddly, the ResMed shows zero Flow Limitation during this period, even though this is surely the very definition of limited flow! Maybe it's because it only looks at the flatness of the peaks, and there are no peaks for it to look at?

I did seem to breathe OK for some of the time, but here's what the last 12 minutes looked like (many of the events caused a big temporary drop in 02 on my oximeter).

You were probably awake. The events mean nothing.

Calm down.

I agree with ChicagoGranny: You were probably awake or at best cycling between wake and sleep in a semi-awake stage without managing to get back to real, continuous sleep.

So those events are most likely not real and you don't need to worry about them.
