New User - Optilife Exhalation Question

Post by WannaSleep » Fri Mar 30, 2007 6:43 am

Hi, all. Last night was my first night ever on CPAP. I'm starting with the Optilife nasal pillow mask. I was awake a bit but did get some sleep, so I'm optimistic. I have one question - is there supposed to be a constant stream of air coming from the exhalation port? Or should I only feel something when I exhale? Right now there is a stream of air even if I hold my breath.

Thanks to everyone for such a great forum. I've been reading the posts for a while and now that I've started therapy it's even more valuable.

Welcome to the hosehead club! I also use the Optilife and yes, there is always a constant stream of air coming out.

XPAP machines are designed with a vent that is always open so that there will always be a stream of air. You need that stream to take away the carbon dioxide when you exhale (it mixes with the incoming air and exits through the vent.)

I think this is the simplest way that you can design the mask and have it be safe under all flow conditions.

FWIW, the vent on your optilife is about average in terms of velocity and definitely below average in terms of noise. Also, on my mask the flow is directed slightly above center, which is better then my Swift (version 1) that sends the air directly forward.
