i know this sounds like a smart*ss answer, but i'm serious. the question doesn't make sense to me.

why pick an ahi of 16.6?

So what unwanted symptoms led you and your doctor down the sleep study road?
Sleep studies aren't normally done on people with no unwanted symptoms.

ah, i see.

WITH cpap, you will have LOWER than 16.6 ahi. how low? we won't know until you start the therapy.

many of us here feel that your ahi should be between 1 and 2.

and mostly, the lower that number is, the better you'll feel. it takes time, but that fatigue will go away.

when you get the machine, come back to this thread(please don't start a new one.) and we can help you lower your ahi.

good luck.

you can do this!

Also, be sure you download OSCAR! You can read up about it and be ready to use it day 1, so you can start posting charts right away. That way, when the wise ones on here (sadly, I am not among them! ), will be able to guide you immediately, without telling you to download OSCAR, format your charts, what information you need to show, etc. You will be good to go and they can start helping you fine tune your therapy right from the get go!

Good luck!

You may not feel better immediately, and sometimes people feel worse in the very beginning because it can be challenging getting used to a chunk of plastic strapped to your face blowing air at you. But there's a beginning for everything, and keep in mind that you can and will learn to sleep comfortably with it. I'd say that not having snoring, fatigue and anxiety will be totally worth it.

At first, your anxiety may manifest as claustrophobia with the mask. When that happens, vow NOT to rip off the mask. Count slowly to 10 while taking deep breaths. Do you still feel like ripping off the mask? Count slowly to 10 again. Then if you MUST take off the mask, vow to put it back on again as you control your anxiety.

You may find yourself more fatigued even when you finally master sleeping with the machine and mask. I think it's a certain kind of "sleep hunger" because sleep feels so good, and your body craves it. After a while it will level out.

So, I'm not trying to scare you or jinx you. I'm trying to give you some realistic idea of what MAY happen at first and urge you not to give up. All of these issues are fixable. Come hear for help. Sometimes that anxiety/claustrophobia is caused by sub-optimal settings, and we can help you figure out what to do.

One morning you will wake up after sleeping all night without snoring or anxiety. You will feel like you are floating on a cloud. THAT's the goal-- to have one night like that, then one more, and one more until almost all of your nights are like that. It is a wonderful feeling and quite addicting. When I finally had that feeling, I wanted more and more.

Before cpap, my AHI was only 13, and now is around 1.
The improvement was very significant.
No more morning headaches, multiple wake-ups to bizarre nightmares, short temper,
terrible memory, and falling asleep during movies, tv shows, at my work, and in the car.
A couple times, I was driving . . .
