FF Mask Question

I noticed that the F&P 431 still outsells the F&P 432 by a pretty large margin. Anyone have any opinions on either. I ordered my Opus, but I think it'd be a good idea to have a FF mask in case of a cold or congestion. I was going to pick between the Respironics Full or the 431/432. I also noticed that the Mirage FF by Resmed does very well. Trying to sort through the differences. Anyone have any experience with one of the FF masks and can attest to them being very quiet? Ultimately, my wife loves how I don't snore much anymore, but I know she doesn't enjoy the gust of air when I'm facing her. I know she also doesn't care for the hissing noise. Any suggestions.

Hi there,

My wife is also not a big fan of the air blowing in her face so we just use a pillow which does the job, even though it's not fancy.

Can't help you with the FF, I use a Swift.

I have using the UMFF for about 6 weeks. Except for middle of the night leaks I have been impressed with how quiet the mask is. It does vent out the top of nose forward. My wife has not said anything about the exhaust yet.

I did once put the exhaust vent in backwards after cleaning which caused the air to blow back against the forehead brace. It sounded like howling gail outside. Other than that it's pretty quiet.

If you don't get a good seal on either one of them, they leak like a sieve. I can't handle the UMFF for long and am still trying to get used to a 432.

Dish,

I've had the 431 for about a month now. It is my first FF mask so I have nothing to compare it to but I can tell you that it is fairly comfortable but I'm having a hard time with leaks. The forehead piece does NOT move to help adjust so you need to rely on the correct cushion (offered in S,M,L) and perfect strap tightening. (something I have not yet mastered..lol) Once I take the time and hammer out the kinks, I'm sure it can be great.

The Ultra Mirage FF is a great mask for me, very quiet too. But the one I've got my eyes on is the Soyala Full Face mask which is not only smaller and less obtrusive, but it's the quietest mask out there. I currently have the nasal version of the Soyala, and I can attest to it being extremely quiet.

First of all you have a very good strategy for getting a workable FF mask. Pedroski has a practical and inexpensive solution to blowing the bed partner off the bed. cflame1 is absolutely correct about achieving a good seal and bookwrm63 provided a great hint to the importance of appropriate strap tension.

I have tried the Hybrid, Ultra Mirage Full Face, and F&P 432 (also fitted the 431 but did not try and sleep with it). The 432 has a foam cushion which I thought made it more comfortable than the 431 ... but your milage will vary. Also, the 432 fits smaller than the equivalent size of the 431 (due to foam cushion I think).

For best fit, it comes down to your particular facial structure (ie. big, small, narrow, wide nose; or thin, long, round, angular, or chubby face; or relatively small head or large head). In addition (at least with the Hybrid), it seems that the pressure used and/or machine algorithm for APAP used may make a difference too. Finally, your sleep preferences (such as side sleeping) may be added into the mix. As for quite, I could not tell the difference between UMFF and 432 but the Hybrid is indeed a bit more noisy.

The best thing to do is to try them all yourself and see what works best for you … that can become expensive if you don’t find one that works for you right away. You may want to try the more popular ones first as you appear to be doing (the ones I mentioned above in addition to maybe the Comfort Full2). There are a few others that other members on rare occasions mention such as the Mojo, Hans Rudolf and one yet to hit the market … the Yara.

The Yara won't be hitting the US market by that name. In the US it is known as the Soyala Full Face Mask, and YES--it is presently available for all to love and cherish.

Which FF mask performs best with Bipap? I was thinking of either the Ultra Mirage II or the Comfortfull 2. Does anyone have bipap experience with either one of these???

You are missing the main issue ... it should not be which one works best with BiPAP but which one works best for YOU ... and that depends on which ones YOU try.

The Hybrid now comes in a new design, it is something called Adaptive Flow. My therapist got one for me through the local sleep lab. The flow coming out of the exhaust holes is definitely reduced based on my own experience and so is the noise if I route the hose over my head (but I prefer to route the hose downwards). My therapist told me that the new design works very well with all the APAP/CPAP machines. I never had any issues even with the earlier design with my Respironics AutoCPAP with C-Flex but according to my therapist, some users had issues with the Hybrid being compatible with the Resmed S8. Now she is completely sold on the Hybrid and recommends it to all her mouth breathing patients....

__Like everyone else in this forum, I was just looking for information. I've seen different opinions on masks used with CPAP vs. BIPAP (ie. the Mirage Activa), and thought I'd get a consensus on the masks I mentioned earlier. I apologize for "missing the point". I thought this forum was meant for asking questions such as mine. I'll be more careful in my next post._______________
