Newbie's 3rd night humidifier leak mask questions

Post by sleepergal » Sat Dec 09, 2006 9:47 am

Hi,

I had my third night last night on the Remstar Auto (the classic). It's quiet, easy to use, and looks great.

I used my Ultra Mirage Full Face mask for the first two nights. After some second night adjustments (thanks to forum tips), it was comfortable, seemed to fit great, and there seemed to be no leaks. But I still woke up with a red mark on the bridge of my nose. Since everything else seems fine should I just stop adjusting and live with the red mark?

On my third night, I used the Comfort Lite 2 with nasal pillows. I loved the mask and plan to use it regularly. It was very comfortable and didn't seem to leak at all. One question - should it leave a big indentation on my upper lip right under my nose or am I doing something wrong?

I was a little concerned about ordering masks as a complete newbie through cpap.com but the sizing guides worked very well for me. I bought the little plastic CL2 sizing guage from them before I ordered the CL2, and I bought return insurance for the UMFF. I'm really happy with the mask choices and the fit.

On the down side, I woke up at 3 am and all of the water in my heated humidifier had leaked out. Big mess. Just went back to bed without any equipment going. I examined the humidifier carefully this morning and think the water tank may not have been seated tightly enough into the bottom piece. Do you think I ruined anything in my humidifier heating piece or my Auto cpap? Should I just try it again tonight?

I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice.

Just make sure the humidifier is dry before you try it.

The type you have usually don't leak. Just make sure the plastic tank and metal bottom are seated before placing in the humidifier. I have my cpap w/ humidifier sitting in a shallow baking pan I got at wal mart. Its a 9"x13" and I had to place a couple of layers of cardboard under the machine in order for the machine to sit level and the electrical wires to clear the lip of the pan.

Some minor mask marks are part of the therapy, most marks should go away within 45-60 minutes.

Hope it works for you.

I had those red marks and they actually got really sore and I had to use antibiotic ointment to get rid of them until I loosened the mask. It feels really loose before it is turned on and then seals up nicely. It was hard to get used to leaving it loose but that seemed to cure the red mark problem both on bridge of nose with activa and in the nostril with the nasal pillow types. Not sure about the leaking humidifier since I havent had that happen yet. good luck with it.

The water container for the classic has to be put together firmly (but don't stress it and crack it).

There are various posts on this. Some say put on a flat surface and push gently etc.

My personal solution is to avoid taking it apart very often.

I find no need to clean very often. I use distilled water.

Of course there are others who feel the need to disassemble every day.

Also make sure the tank is seated in the gasket where the air goes. That can hiss if you remove the tank and don't get it back right, losing air.

Best to keep all machines on the floor on some kind of floor protector. Tray, baking pan plastic tub whatever suits you.

Lower machines reduce potential for rainout.

I agree that you should make sure the machine and humidifier is dry then give it a try.
