Can't sleep, can't sleep....

Post by mxylplik2 » Fri Feb 18, 2005 11:50 am

Tonight is my third sleep study in about 6 years. I want to make sure that the pressure is right (I think it is 7 now) because I haven't used my CPAP in two years. The appointment is at 9:15pm and I will guess that they want me to sleep around 10'ish. I usually doze off on my way back home on the bus and that prevents me from sleeping until later on that night.

I have to keep myself awake tonight on the bus but sometimes it is near impossible for us OSA'ers. I will try to read an interesting book - or maybe be the only one standing (when there are plenty of seats).

Wish me luck.

Good luck mxylplik2
Hope it goes well
How about walking home rather than taking the bus? Better for the health and might tire you out!
OK, I know you're now going to say it's a 10 mile journey, but just a suggestion

I always tell everyone to bring some Ambien in case they can't fall asleep and the clinic doesn't supply it.

mxylplik2, good luck at the study.

After this study, I think I'd talk to the doctor if I were you, about using an autopap from now on rather than a straight cpap. Might be better to have a machine that can vary the pressure during the night every night from now on, instead of one fixed pressure blowing at you all night. I use the Respironics REMstar Auto with C-flex and heated humidifier. I love the comfort of C-flex for a drop in pressure during each exhalation, while still getting all the benefits of an autopap's ability to vary the pressure minute to minute according to what the machine senses that I really need to keep the throat open.

No guessing or wondering later down the road, "Is this single pressure right for me?" Kind of like having a mini-sleep study at home every night, with the autopap itself finding the necessary pressure all the time.

What happened?

Post by mxylplik2 » Sat Feb 19, 2005 9:14 am

I had my split-night last night and the technician mentioned that I "didn't qualify" for titration study. Apparently, I did not have enough episodes to qualify me. It is obvious that I didn't sleep the way I normally do with all those wires, sleeping at 10pm (I sleep closer to midnight) and being in a different bed. In addition, I feel asleep pretty quick and fairly loud noises from outside my room woke me up (wheeling of hospital carts, loud laughing amongst staff). So after a little nap, I didn't feel sleepy and probably was in bed for an hour or so trying to fall asleep again.

So I called the technician in and asked him to lower the temperature of the room, went to the bathroom and drank some water - in an effort to get comfortable. I slept till about 6am (not straight) and he came in and said I didn't qualify and that I should talk to my doctor about the results.

What happened?! I have a CPAP machine from less than two years ago, the pressure setting is 7. My doctor and pulmonologist both tell me that my tonsils are BIG. How do I go from using CPAP at a pressure of 7 to not qualifying?? Is it possible that I don't have a bad case of apnea anymore? Is my tiredness attributable to only getting about 6 hours of sleep per night? Needless to say, I am frustrated.

Anyone else "not qualify"? I don't know if my insurance company will let me have another sleep study. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

mxylplik2,

Do you have other related conditions? daytime sleepiness, hypertension, heavy snoring? This happened to me during my first sleep study. Find out what your AHI was during the study. My was 12 and I ultimately went back for a second study and now use cpap.
Sincerely,

Symptoms

Post by mxylplik2 » Mon Feb 21, 2005 8:21 am

Daytime tiredness but not to the point of dozing off at work. Lack of focus/concentration. Have dozed off driving a few times but maybe I was really tired. No high blood pressure. People claim I snore heavily but haven't heard so recently. I will ask about AHI. Thanks.
