OT - Just a little - shortening a hose
OT - Just a little - shortening a hose
I have a hose that I would like to be a little shorter. Has anyone cut the end off of one and then reconnected it successfully? What are the issues I am likely to have to address. BTW the hose is just plain - not heated.
Thanks for any suggestions and/or guidance.

From what length to what length?JDS74 wrote:I have a hose that I would like to be a little shorter. Has anyone cut the end off of one and then reconnected it successfully? What are the issues I am likely to have to address. BTW the hose is just plain - not heated.

Isn't there one that is the length you're looking for already?
If a person was to try that experiment, I would think they should try somewhere other than the end of the hose where the connectors are. Might be a bigger problem attaching an end than making a sleeve (maybe making a tube out of plastic for the inside of the hose) and then taping, gluing or otherwise connecting the sections together that way.

Re: OT - Just a little - shortening a hose
A standard hose is 6 ft, logically moving the machine is the best choice, but if the best choice wont do, maybe two two ft spliced together will work a pcv coupler can be used for the splice I think. I keep my machine on a nite table, and route the hose over the headboard, what little hangs behind the headboard. Jim

Re: OT - Just a little - shortening a hose
Hi Den:
I want to go from 18 inches to about 12 inches for the connector hose between my cpap and HC150 humidifier. The current setup is a little loopy.
I'll try cutting a spare 6 foot hose and splicing to see how difficult that is. I had hoped someone had some experience with taking off and putting back the rubber ends.

if not two would be 14 inches! I can't see how 18 inches could be hard to solve by moving something a little. Jimbdz wrote:This came with an old mask...I use it with all now. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/Resmed ... #specs-tab

Re: OT - Just a little - shortening a hose
Thanks for all the suggestions. I have ordered the short hose recommended by BDZ and, if that fails, then cutting and splicing as recommended by Wulfman and HoseCrusher will be the next step.
My setup has the CPAP sitting on the HC150 tray that holds the humidifier tank so the distance between the cpap and the HC150 tank is pretty much fixed. The current connecting hose is 18 inches plus the end pieces and makes it a little loopy for my taste. I'm trying to get everything compact and not messy.
I took a close look at the Respironics hoses I have a spares to see if there was any way to remove the rubber end pieces and they seem to be molded onto the flexible hose and not removable so shortening an existing hose would require cutting and splicing.

Re: OT - Just a little - shortening a hose
I have a spare cheapie hose that they let me keep from the sleep study. Bending the hose it appears to be only glued in, but spiraled in when they did it. It could probably be just pulled out. Even if the threads couldn't be cleaned out there seems to be enough space to glue onto the strain relief section of the end. Given that this will be a fixed position set up there will not be a lot of strain on the tube. My favorite glue for applications like this is hot melt glue. At least you won't be breathing in toxic vapors for a week. Good to see people taking a DIY approach.

Re: OT - Just a little - shortening a hose
My brother had several of those crappy hoses that they give at the hospital if you forget yours. My late Dad used plumbers tape followed by duct tape cutting the hose itself and not the ends. While these have held water rather than pressured air, no leaks in over 5 years now.

They also have some large sizes of heat shrink tubing. Some hot melt glue spread thin on both sections and let cool. Then slide the heat shrink on and heat with a hair dryer, one of the non OSHA approved types that used to get hot. Makes a nice looking connection that is strong even if just a butt joint.
