Chest tightness

Post by wozzy » Fri Jul 14, 2006 12:39 am

Sorry to start another topic, but well, it is entirely different.

I find that it's really hard to breathe when I have my CPAP on and for a long time after I take it off. My chest gets really tight and it's quite taxing just to exhale.

I got my CPAP yesterday, and I put it on at the store for a few minutes to test it. For the rest of the afternoon, my chest felt tight.

Today, I put it on for about 2 minutes, if even. Almost instantly, it became very hard to breathe, and now, about 30 minutes later, my lungs feel just as tight.

I have execise-induced asthma, but it usually doesn't bother me otherwise.

I don't know if this is normal or something that should cause concern. My air pressure is only set at 6. It didn't bother me during my sleep study when I used a CPAP, so I'm not sure what's different now. I didn't take my asthma medicine last night, but I don't think that should make such a difference because my asthma isn't that bad.

Now it's worse than it was when I first took the mask off and I feel like I'm about to start hyperventillating.

Your pressure shouldn't feel any different than it did at the titration. Perhaps the new machine you were given is malfunctioning and providing a full boost output which is quite high. I received one machine which provided no useful pressure and then one which ran wide open (full boost) and then one which was just right. Kinda like Goldie Locks. LOL.

If you tell us about your equipment perhaps we can determine other things to check.

Ok it's been 14 hours since I had the CPAP on last night, and I still feel like it's hard to breathe. I've been very conscious of my breathing all day, and it feels like I'm still wearing the CPAP and breathing against the resistance.

I called my doctor twice but she hasn't called me back yet.

I have my machine and mask listed below. I don't think the pressure is higher than it says, because I had it on ramp.

I think I had some sort of asthmatic response to the CPAP, either from the air itself, or from something in the CPAP that irritated my lungs.

For a feeling of chest tightness I'd go to urgent care or the ER. Maybe it's not anything heart related, but better safe than sorry.

Have you used your asthma rescue inhaler? Did it make any difference?

I took my inhaler last night and today, and it hasn't really helped.

Ditto
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally worn out and screaming,WOO HOO what a ride!

Let your new machine run on empty for 3 hours or more.
Soak your hose and mask in warm soapy water for abt. an hour - you might be reacting to residues left in the system after production.
