Sleep Study Report Help

Post by lionfamlee » Mon Feb 29, 2016 10:32 pm

My wife had a sleep study done, but we are still trying to figure out what some items mean. I understand some of it, but would the overall numbers point toward light, moderate, or severe obstructive sleep apnea? How many apnea events total did she have. What was the apnea index per hour? What was the hypnea + hyponea ?

Thanks in advance!

Her AHI which they have listed as A/H Index is 22 which puts her in the classification of moderate sleep apnea. http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/sle ... ng-results

Ok, thanks a bunch. I am still a bit confused though. Does the report show the total number of all apnea events for the entire test period? Was her apnea + hyponea 118 events per hour? Is the normal, moderate, etc? Her test lasted 477.6 min. Thanks!

ok, how many times do you need the same thing explained, over and over?

AHI is per hour, the total events is the total events, nobody has said they're the same.

lionfamlee,

The data you posted shows the following:

Total time in bed: 477.6 minutes = 7.96 hours
Total SLEEP time: 322.5 minutes = 5.375 hours
Total number of apneas + hypopneas = 118

The AHI = (Total number of apneas + hypopneas)/(Total SLEEP time) = 118/5.375 = 21.953 = 22.0 after rounding to one decimal place.

A diagnostic AHI = 22 places your wife in the range for moderate OSA. The ranges are:

5 <= diagnostic AHI < 15 is mild OSA
15 <= diagnostic AHI < 30 is moderate OSA
30 <= diagnostic AHI is severe OSA

If you want to learn more about what all the numbers in your wife's sleep study report means and how they are calculated, you might want to read my blog entry Understanding the data in your sleep study

I am in Japan and on a terminal that auto translates websites, documents, etc from what ever language to Japanese then decodes it again. So the peoples messages on this board does not come up as you type them. Plus the report I typed was translated by a friend. That is a reason I asked again. There's is no need to be rude. After serving 21 years on active duty I don't tolerate disrespect.
I didn't type that they were the same.

Thank you for taking the time to break it down and explaining it. I have reviewed several websites and articles prior, but then again her report was in Kanji instead of English so it was still difficult to comprehend. Not to add that I read comments while heavily medicated...those good old combat injuries.

Thanks again.

Try to get the last two - they may be important ones.
